ImagiNations Design Competition 2011

I still waiting on a reply from a email I sent a month or so ago. I was going to email them about if the competition was still on but thought against it since it was holiday season and they still haven't replied back to my previous question.
Ooo I could ask here.
Is the competition worldwide? I did find out it was through a website while looking for research on Imagineering and ImagiNations but it doesn't hurt to make sure. :)

Moose; yeah, that sounds about right, I'd just figured they'd be quick on that one. I've had a reply as quick as a few days, or as long as several weeks.

Sae, yes, it can be a worldwide competition, I believe. but someone else may have a better answer.

Keep in mind guys that the ImagiNations Rep is only ONE person. They usually bring on others to help closer to finals week in Glendale but for the most part one person heads up all the e-mails and contact stuff until the entries begin to roll into WDI.

The contest ebbs and flows when it comes to how many people enter each year, but from what I've been told last year had quite a few applicants enter...so I can only imagine how many e-mails the rep has to respond to now, especially this year with the contest being up in the air. I'm sure they've had to deal with quite a lot. Hold tight...all questions will be answered in time.

This rep is not only trying to coordinate the entire contest but also plan out events, deal with press, deal with college and human relations, updating the website, updating forms, updating paperwork such as non disclosures, working internally to get other Imagineers to participate in the contest, finding judges, figuring what's the most cost efficient and timely matter in showing your entries to all WDI campus', working with tight budgets, etc. There is A TON of work that goes on back stage just to hold this contest. Have some patience, it does and will pays off.

As far as I know the contest IS open internationally now. Back in 2005 it was only open to US and Canada, but in 2007 there was a team/member from the UK. Since then (2007) I believe the contest IS international as long as you meet the other requirements. This is something I WOULD contact the rep about.

Terp, as always, welcome with great to know and needed info! :)

I didn't realize there was only one representative; the way it had been worded on site, I had always assumed a few working. I don't envy them, it would have to be a monumental job. Any chance they might hire to help for that...? ;)

i had heard the same about last year, from you and other wise. I had calculated a possible number over a hundred when they sent out emails to us all. Either way, that's crazy, and I guess I should personally have expected something like that.

I wonder what address we can forward gifts to; I'd love to get that guy/gal a gift basket to thank for the work! Anyone with that workload needs a pickmeup, and i'd like to thank them for the excellent job! :D

thanks again, terp!

Thanks, I'll wait patiently for a reply back, really hope it is as I've waited 3 years to do this competition. It's shocking its only run by one person, I thought they'd have a team of people since it's so popular.

Thanks again Terp, really handy having this insight.

I have to agree there, must be such of a mammoth task to do and really stressing as well (but very rewarding). It's a shame they don't put more into this competition, but what the rep has done (from what I have seen) has been amazing!

Yeah in the beginning stages they usually have one person running the show, once finals comes about and the finalists are notified other Imagineers begin to get involved.

The head person gets an assistant/coordinator closer to finals. Which I'm sure helps out a lot.

Last year the final teams were paired with 2 imagineers to help mentor them the month before actually going out to Glendale to present their concepts. The team I helped last year had 2 imagineers, one was a younger newer imagineer and the other was an older senior type imagineer.

I thought that was an amazing pairing, a classic traditionalist and a newer up and coming legend so to speak.

My year we had only one imagineer to help mentor. I believe that one mentor helped all teams. Last year each team has a different set of Imagineers to help out with preparing you.

Granted this contest changes year to year so who knows. Maybe with the amount of entries from last year (120+) they'll bring on more help.

I've wanted to officially help with ImagiNations since I did the contest. They ask you, when you're at finals to go out and be embassodors of the contest. I always try to bring the contest up on the board and if teams want help or mentoring, I'm always here for them. I love when a team magically finds me and e-mails.

I have a good track record with who I've helped (both teams made it to finals and won top honors in their category). So I mean I must be helping them some, ya know!?!?!? I mean it's really all them, they have such strong concepts and creative ideas...all I do is ask them a bunch of questions about the concept to make them think about every detail. I can't take any credit for their brilliance. LOL!

But yes, it would be simply amazing to actually work at WDI and help with the contest. In the past they've actually asked past winners to come and help the new finalists durring their dry run throughs of their presentation. Being stuck in the midwest, I've never gotten an invitation. Oh well...maybe one day.

As for sending gifts, Disney can not receive anything of monetary value, but you could send a thank you card that's hand written, that would be nice.

I'm sorry to hear that you can't enter the contest. I can't believe they're not even allowing students from Canada to enter...

Did this bad news come from the imaginations rep?

Question about weird powerpoint addition

Hi everyone!

I stumbled upon this thread when I was researching the deadline dates for the 2011 competition. This thread was one of the first google results and I've appreciated reading through everyone's insight.

I had a question for terp. If you don't feel comfortable answering, I completely understand. I submitted a project to the competition last year and was really hung up over their new powerpoint presentation addition. For the 5 images that you need to include in the powerpoint, we put images of parts of our project. Do you (or anyone else that competed last year) know if that's what they want, or if they want like storyboard illustrations that describe your concept?

Any input would be great! Best of luck to everyone... hope to see you in CA!

It's a huge shame and alot of people are going to be disappointed.

Yes, the bad news came from the imaginations rep.
I hate being the bearer of bad news. :(

sae: sorry that you can't enter, such a bummer.

blair_fan28: yes the additional powerpoint template pre entry kind of a threw a lot of teams off. It was done for a good reason. WDI took all those powerpoints and placed them on an internal server/website for other WDI campus' and judges not based in Glendale and for the Imagineers who are rather busy with their day to day work to view and leave comments.

This also cuts down on costing and shipping entries. My year (2005) and a few years after, WDI would get all those entries in and have to unpack them in Glendale and judge them, then pack them up and pay for them to be sent to Orlando to be judged then pay for them to be packed up again and sent back.

I believe this new process not only cuts down on cost but also allows for much busier Imagineers to quickly look at what could be coming in in terms of the contest and for them to judge the work. Not all Imagineers have time to participate in ImagiNations so this way they can have a small role in the contest...not to mention it does weed out the weaker projects.

It's amazing that you have to narrow down your work to only 5 slides. I imagine it would be hard to judge what things you should include in those 5 slides in order to sum up your entire concept. I don't believe there's a correct formula as to what they want to see. If it were me and I had to enter the contest again I believe I would approach the powerpoint template summary methodically.

If you could, send me what you did submit to wdi for your 5 slides last year. This can help me understand maybe what you were lacking, also can I ask how many members did you have on your team and what they're studying at school (including you)? Hit me up at rjterpstra@gmail.com

All I can provide are suggestions and tips. I don't have the correct answers as WDI changes what they're looking for each year for finalists but I can possibly provide insight to maybe what you were missing last year and maybe a new way to try it this year.

Hey terp,

Thanks for the input! I'm sending along the powerpoint we included last year for you to take a look at. No need to rush getting back to me. Expect an email soon!

I was confused about some of the project requirements.

First of all, the 5 slides. Is that ALL they want, or are we allowed to send other things along with them, like artwork, presentation boards, etc?

Also, should each of the 5 slides be an individual rendering (in other words, sending in 5 renderings total), or are we allowed to have multiple objects per slide?

And finally, is the initial deadline (ie, the early March deadline) the final deadline for any materials, or are we allowed to do things like models or higher-quality concept art after that should date we become finalists?

If anyone can answer any of these, that would be great. :)

As for the slides, they were whatever you felt would best represent your project; if you wanted multiple items, etc, it was your decision. Granted, that left smaller area for you to showcase the items, and I bet they frowned on that, but you could do as you pleased. Also, it mentioned in the instructions last year that you sent everything at the time. They would look at your presentation, first, and that would move you to semifinals, and then they would look at the material you sent in, which would decide the finalists.

After you'd have become finalists, I believe there is a time where you fine tune your projects with WDI mentors help; I'm not sure, but I know terp has posted some info on this previously.

Now, this is what I gathered from last year's, but I'm not sure if someone (lke terp) has a better explanation.

Also, from the email i got, it sounds as though the deadline for the application itself, not the entry, is due the 1st of march.

Last year applicants sent things into wdi in waves from what I recall.

1. Teams printed off the official contest application, filled it out and sent it into WDI.

2. WDI then checked every application to ensure students majors match what the contest rules stated.

3. Teams continue to keeping working on their projects while WDI checks the application.

4. WDI notifies if teams qualify for the contest.

5. Teams who make it to the next round must make a 5 slide powerpoint showcasing their concept using what work they've done thus far.

6. Powerpoints are sent back to Glendale and the first round of judging begins

7. Teams continue to work on their final entry until they hear back for WDI as to if they made it to the next round (semi finals)

8. Teams are notified if they made it to semi finals.

9. Teams must send in their final entry for judging (storyboards, models, typed paper treatment, video...etc. Whatever avenue the team deems best to showcase their concept)

10. Teams sit and wait and or continue to work on projects for IF you make it to finals.

11. Finalist are notified and assigned imagineering mentors in order to prepare them for their presentation out in glendale

12. Imagineers and teams work for a month or so in preparing the team for finals

13. Teams fly out to glendale. They have a few days to work in house on any final touches.

14. Teams present concepts to the imagineering pannel.

15. Winners will be announced during the awards luncheon.

That's how I believe last years contest went down.

As for this year, I'm not sure the timeframe or schedule. We don't even know if WDI will be following this SAME format. So don't get excited.

Maybe last years format worked well and made things run smoothly...maybe it was a nightmare. All I know is that in due time things will be revealed. Like I stated before the contest WAS pushed back because of retooling. Who knows? Maybe the have a new format they'll try this year.

As for my year (2005) we did everything in one fail swoop. The application and the entry were sent in at once at the end of January. This contest changes each year so hold tight. The only way to prepare for ImagiNations is to beginning working early and have enough stuff done for when they announce the dates and structure of the contest.

You shouldn't even be concerned at this point about timeframes...you should be DOING...CREATING...DESIGNING....BUILDING....etc.

It's been said that people who want to know deadlines are the type of people who like to procrastinate or push things off until the last minute. Or they're the type of people who want to do only the minimal amount of work needed....I hope this is not the case for ANY of you entering.

It works best to your advantage if you've already begun to work on your entry. Last years winners and myself worked months in advance (5-7) months. I know of 2 teams that have already begun designing for next years contest.

Anyway I've said a lot in regards to this contest. There have been a ton of posts in regards to the contest. The honest truth is I can only tell you about the past...not the future. Everything that I have said in this thread could and most likely will be null in void.

Anyway I hope this helps. Good luck to those of you who enter.
