Its time!!

Hey everyone!! I stumbled upon this contest last year with the help of Google. Unfortunately it was about 1 week before application deadline and that wasn't enough time to get a team together but I can't wait to enter this year! I have found 2 others to join me in entering this year. One is a mechanical engineer, one is an illustrator, and I am a vision scientist. My field is not on their list but I am a PhD student and I study how our brains perceive the world, I specialize in vision. Do you think they would not let me enter due to this? I hope not!!! I do art and design of all type in my free time but it's not my academic field. I still can draw, do 3d modeling, computer programming, video work and more. Will this be ok? I thought we would be judged on our work and ideas not on our fields. I thought we have a good chance but based on what I'm reading it seems hard to get to finals. What do they initially judge you on? Any tips or advice? I know some of you are probably competition ;) but it would still be great to discuss the contest and the like......I am so excited!

Well word is that the contest is 50/50 right now. This news comes from the inside...

They're in the midst of retooling the structure of the entire contest (this actually happens every year) as well as bringing in new leaders.

The contest changes each year and the format from entry submissions to finals week in Glendale change each year....

I've been told that the contest still could happen this year and to be ready to "deploy" if and when the site updates.

I know of 2 teams that are wanting to enter this year and I have one team that wants to enter next year. Let's hope they suss this out and fast. LOL!!!

But this could be a REALLY good thing as now the stress is getting placement (internships) for finalists and seeing how there's some BIG projects at WDI in the works, I can see them trying to work it out so that the new finalists will come in at a time that WDI will need the help. WHICH WOULD BE AMAZING!

One great thing is that over time, since my year, the amount of interns WDI takes from ImagiNations is increasing, and that is a very good thing. It can only get better. I mean why else enter the contest, we are dreamers and doers and this is the chance to show WDI that "you get it."

Sit tight and keep a weathered eye out.

Thanks terp79! I've been keeping up/lurking this thread for the past few months and keeping a eye on the website. I've missed out on a chance of entering this competition the past 2 years (1 year because I found out wayyy too late and couldn't get a team together and the last year due to personal reasons), and I reallllyyy want the chance next year. *Fingers crossed it happens!

PS- Thanks terp79 for all the information you've given us.

I entered the contest in 2009. I'm amazed the site is still showing the team that won the contest in 2009, and the site hasn't been updated. I'm not entering this year, maybe next year. 2009 also saw the lowest number of teams flown to glendale in the competition's history.

1.) Make sure your team is DIVERSE...4 people, different backgrounds, male and female.

2.) Presentation is huge...if you're sending in a video or powerpoint make it polished, even have the DVD itself look good with good packaging.

3.) Come up with something that's never been done before. Don't do what my team did where we reimagined an extinct attraction for a new audience.

Terp79, you always manage to pique my interest!

it's a shame to hear its a 50/50 shot at the moment.

As I've already been working for this year, I'd hate to see it not come to light (but then again, my work can still be showcased). I know you've said that it changes each year; I never noticed much difference, but if you say there's a big change this time, I'm definitely looking forward to it!

you must have some decent contacts to find out what's up; I've heard rumblings from my own about big things in the works. This bit of info is what's really getting to me, I've been hoping to get on this wave of new work, but it's hard to find an in. As much as I love that aspect of this internship, I do think it's a shame there's becoming more emphasis for individuals from IN. But then again, it's bad enough to try without it! :P

Going to continue my vigil each day... Thank you!

Yes, it stinks that a lot of people have been planning for a while and now everything's up in the air. Sit tight and continue plussing those ideas.

I do have some AMAZING contacts and they know how much the contest means to me and how I help promote the contest not to mention mentor teams. Teams that usually end up winning. LOL. What I wouldn't give to be the official imaginations leader....

Not sure what you mean by " . . .becoming more emphasis for individuals from IN."

Do you mean people from Indiana? Last year had a team from Indiana but before that, besides me, I have not heard of any other teams or individuals from my state entering and making it to finals.

It's hard to get in, even individuals that have made it to finals and done well in the contest and were lucky enough to have landed internships have not officially gotten in.

My hopes are that they would rework the rules and let anyone enter (even if you've entered the contest b4 and made it to finals). Maybe a battle of the all stars type of thing. I entered when they still had the individual category and I would LOVE to enter with a team seeing how teams are everything inside the walls in Glendale.

All of us Alumni who have made it to finals and even won look back on what we could of done better and if we only knew what we know now and how we can/could apply that to imaginations. LOL!!!

Well 2010 had a lot of entries, but from what I recall, 2009 was late to the game with promoting the contest and even updating the site.

It's not only about the teams being diverse but also the concept.

As for expo_seekers other 2 points...things have changed as to how you send your entry in and what judges look for....

Looks like it is happening. If you email them (the email is on their website) they will respond saying that it has been pushed back a month, but it is happening.

That's killer that the rep actually informed u that the contest is still happening. If they're pushing it back by a month that means entries will be due in most likely in March.

I'll have to get a hold if my internal contacts to see if they can give me a little more insight!

I figured it would all be sorted out by the new year!

Good luck to those of you who enter this year!
