I'm Just Sick Over The Great Movie Ride

Yes
I was talking to my daughter about this today. I loved this attraction for it's tie to old Hollywood. However, it does seem a little strange that a set of non- Disney movies are featured so prominently. Yes, I know- that's the point... but maybe they are making the shift towards all Disney movies. That's all I can guess...With all of the other non-old-Hollywood changes being there, it seems like the flavor of the park is going to change drastically. Who knows if the sponsorship was not renewed on TCM's part, with cable viewership going down... Just another angle.
Also remember The Great Movie Ride was designed in the context of licensing films vs Disney's film library circa 1986, of which many films were featured in the Magic Kingdom.

It will be a sad occurrence when it's gone. However, it's not the end of something that people planned a vacation around.

It's a classic attraction that was there on opening day and will remain in the hearts of those who rode it. We're heading out there next Sunday to try and be one the last guests to ride it.

Where we did not ride it all that often. When a Disney classic goes away, you have to try and be there. We went to the last Main Street Electrical Parade showing and was actually teary eyed.

Where I know I will not be that way on The Great Movie Ride -- Disney classics will always have place in people's (mine included) hearts.

I'm sorry for your loss. That being said I never really cared for the ride, even the first year it opened. It seems that the animatronics were sub par and the whole being part of the movies thing with the CMs were lame.

While I understand progress and that TGMR has fallen somewhat dated, I am just sick and sad thinking of DHS without it. What will my trips be like without Singin in the Rain, Mob Alley, Alien, and The Wizard of Oz???

I tell you, I am just sick......:bawling:

Will the park need to be renamed? How can you even call it DHS when it will have just as much in common with Hollywood as The Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Animal Kingdom? Having attractions based on movies does not make this a Movie Studio.

Should the park be considered for a rename?? What do you all think?
A name change has been in the cards for DHS for at least 2 years now.

I rode gmr 10 time or so. It's neat but it's time is up. It was fun it's extremely dated and no longer fits. I won't really miss it sorry.
That's the same shortsighted mentality of the current Disney leadership.

Just because it's outdated, doesn't mean it needs to be scrapped. Update it and keep a park icon. The fact it's so dated that it "needs" to be scrapped is Disney's fault.

It's a matter of scale. Being bummed or excited is perfectly reasonable. Being "sick" is a bit of an overreaction. I leave for WDW in three days. They could announce today that the entire resort is closing forever tomorrow and it still wouldn't make a rational person "sick."
Pretty sure he's not throwing up and incapacitated over the Great Movie Ride closing. It was more of a euphemism.

However, in your hypothetical "entire resort" closing scenario, I think I would be physically ill.

So many people have discussed updating the ride with improved AAs, but my issue is...how would that convince casual guests to ride? And what are the odds that guests would register and appreciate these changes even if they did ride? After SWL opens, guest will continue to flock to RnR and ToT...the same can't really be said of GMR. And while I obviously don't think that every DHS ride needs to be a massive crowd-pleaser...it kind of stands to reason that TDO would want the park's landmark to boast a popular E-Ticket.

I guess I just don't see a solution where everyone would be satisfied. A major revamp of GMR would still anger long-time fans of the attraction, minor alterations wouldn't do much to address the problem, and leaving it as is wasn't really an option.

If they spent as much time letting people know they were improving the ride as they are hyping the new screen machine that's replacing it, the demand and interest would be there....

From what I can tell, the new attraction is going to be a mix of screens and physical ride elements, so I'm feeling pretty optimistic on that front.

And I know many people who found the GMR boring and hated sitting through it. I'm not one of those people, but I don't think guests who did consider GMR "skippable" (for whatever reason) would be convinced to ride just because the animatronics were replaced. Then again, who knows? Maybe we would've been pleasantly surprised.

No more first world than your being excited for what's replacing the GMR....

I guess TDO's giving up altogether on the entire Old Hollywood idea for DHS. Maybe we should have seen this coming when they closed Sid Cahuenga's store...:(

If they "just updated it" you'd all still up in arms over you favorite scene getting cut. Look at at how well people took journey, energy and now pirates getting updated. You you dont seem to understand is that even if they updated it. The ride would be out of date in 5 years again. Also why on earth should disney promote other companies ip's when theirs are so strong now? I'm sorry but gmr's time has come and gone as shown by the short wait times it had for the last decade.

IMHO, HS (or MGM) was all about being "In the Movies". You walk in the "studios" and you are immediately transported into the Hollywood of old and new. You have rides like ToT and GRM that put you into an older time that is classic and still considered very cool in my book with their great stories and CM interactions. Then you have RnR where newer Hollywood puts you on a rollercoaster of newer age music and fame. But alas...the MGM we all grew up with is slowly becoming no more. Even though we see the great Art Deco decor of the wonderful classic Hollywood era, we are losing what MGM used to be all about. GMR was the pinnacle of the park with it giving you the definite "In the Movies" feel showing you what the movies and musicals of the greats were all about. Sci-Fi Cafe with it's "back-in-time" black and white movies with aliens and spaceships on strings, Prime Time Cafe, Hollywood Brown Durby...

There will come a day when all of these remnants of the past will be changed it seems.:(

Well said. I miss the old days and will truly miss TGMR.

Does anyone know if there is a website out there that shows pictures of the costumes and props in the queue or at least lists them? The past few times I went via FastPass and didn't get to see some of the costumes in the main line. There was a green dress - not sure which film it was from - just curious if anyone knows of an online site that has this info (I've had no luck searching). Thanks.

TBH, I don't think RnRC ever fit at DHS, and it still doesn't now. IMO it was a direct response to Universal, and WDW's lack of thrill rides in general. The facade of RnRC (with that huge guitar) is an eyesore and completely takes you out of the Old Hollywood vibe that Sunset Boulevard and ToT work together to create.

Anyway, I don't say this to knock RnRC (which is a fun ride, and one I'd be sad to lose), just to point out that we're always going to idealize the Disney parks of our childhoods...but they weren't perfect then, and aren't now. Disney's deal with MGM was rocky from the start, and (as people have already mentioned on this thread) it doesn't pay to give other company's IPs a stage when Disney now has so many of its own to showcase. I would argue ToT was really the pinnacle of the park (built so that you could see it from far away, and Sunset Boulevard, the theater and everything else was built in service to the vision for ToT) but GMR began to be seen as the centerpoint of the park because of where it was situated. Now, that ride isn't drawing enough people, and it's occupying prime real estate–perfect for an E-Ticket.

I grew up on MGM and my favorite movie of all time is an MGM musical, but the "studio" aspect of DHS has been wearing thin for years, and I'm relieved that TDO is finally taking decisive action to give DHS a strong theme again. I would prefer a brand new, functioning DHS to a time capsule that's gradually becoming less and less thematically coherent as the years pass.

The feel of the park, specifically this side which is the old Hollywood side, needs to stay that way in themeing. As long as the Facade stays Gromens Chineese THeatre, then I can accept the GMR going away, but if they turn it into a Toontown facade, then they will have devistated a great look and feel to the park.
