I saw a preview show of Monsters Inc...

So I was at the right place at the right time and got to see a tech rehersal of Monsters Inc Laugh Floor today.

What a total mess. There's hardly anything redeeming about this fiasco at all. This "living character" project seems like a grand idea when you are bringing life to characters guest care about like Crush or Mickey Mouse, but this show features total duds that don't connect with the audience.

Some more random unorganized thoughts...

The queue and the theatre itself are themed sort of okay. The very first room is a throw off because it is exactly the same as the old Timekeeper queue, but when you move down into the pre-show holding area they start using the bright colors and sharp lines associated with Monsters Inc. It is nothing impressive, but well done for what it is, and probably the ONLY good thing about this attraction.

The seats that we have to sit on... They're like sitting on Fisher Price sets. No padding at all. You can tell that it is of the durable plastic that won't have be be repaired as often as real seating, but it is amazingly uncomfortable. It makes a bad show worse.

Then there is the show itself. Why, why, WHY?!?!?!? There is no story to this attraction at all. There is a plot, abeit a very loosely constructed plot, but it is BORING. The idea that this little generator collects our laughs and fills up as the show progresses is the only thing that holds this mess together, and even that failed miserably because NO ONE LAUGHED AT THE BAD JOKES. They only bothered to fill up the little laughter generator right at the very end when they rapid fired out a bunch of the audience submitted jokes, but even then no one was laughing too hard. I actually started screaming out "SHENANIGANS!" as that tube started filling up randomly while the audience stared around the room blankly. Besides the bad jokes, I have to say I don't care about these characters AT ALL. I only saw the movie once, so I can't even remember if these guys were in the film, but why are they using no-name characters to begin with? What happened to the crazy snow-cone guy? What about Sulley? Why is one of the main characters of the film not present in a Monster's Inc ride? What about that little color changing chameleon guy that was the villain in the film? They could have made this show slightly more interesting to watch if they had him crash the comedy club and the monsters had to win it back. But no....

So lemme see here... No story? Check. Boring characters? Check. What else? Ah, there are no in-theater effects in this thing at all. Not much lighting to speak of. Only a few random squirts of fog juice. That's it. It would have done some good to make this show a special effects extravaganza, that way at least guests could go "wow" at special effects even if they are bored by everything else. But no, nothing.

That about wraps up everything I can think of at the moment. This show is a total fiasco. 0 out of 10. Worse than Stitch. And as if this attraction was not a total catastrophe on its own merits, they stuck it in Tomorrowland of the Magic Kingdom of all places, where it deals the final crippling blow to one of WDI's neatest accomplishments (Tomorrowland 1995, I mean). This attraction has nothing to do with the future, nothing to do with making things better for tomorrow, nothing to do with anything really. What a total failure...

sadly, I've been hearing this from many CMs and Upper CMs. They are expecting it to be like Crush... which nothing will ever be like. Crush is the best!

Hopefully thay get it all worked out... or it may be the first attraction built, tested.. and closed. lol

I know I can't give too much of an opinion because the show is still in test and adjust phase right now, and I've not seen any of the test shows...but it seems that Disney has truly ruined the great idea they had of Tomorrowland 95 with Fantasyland East, especially if the attraction such as Laugh Floor doesn't have a good story line, etc.

Am I right in that Stitch doesn't use Fast Passes anymore because it simply does not need it? When I went in January, they were all closed and covered over....and I can't remember if Laugh Floor will use Fast Passes, which I think is rediculous.

Perhaps if the Laugh Floor bombs......PERHAPS......Imagineers, well maybe not so much them, but management will understand that they need to move toward better and more well themed attractions, etc. Perhaps the Laugh Floor will have a very short life....only to be replaced by something else.....but a part of me wonders.....is it possible that the test audiences, etc could just possibly influence the show to NEVER open?! That management would loose hope for it? I doubt it , due to the money, but I wonder.

How Embarassing.......a Tomorrowland, albiet SciFi.....with Space Mountain dedicated to the space age.....the peoplemover....sort of old school tomorrowish space age......the carousel of progress, which doesn't even belong tomorrowland anymore....Buzz and astro orbiter.....acceptable themes in my opinion....the random speedway.....and stitch and monsters.....wow what a flop this land has become. :ROFLOL: :dazzle:

Viva Timekeeper!

I only hope you caught it on an off day. Otherwise, well, let's not think about it...

I'm really getting worried about this attraction.. Firs the canceled previews, then the tepid response from the press and now more poor reviews lately (not just this one) and yet still no AP-holder or DVC previews...

I'm thinking it might not ever open.

After the show some Imagineers came out and did a short survey with the audience about how they felt about the show. In talking to one of them afterwards, I was told that they have a goal of opening this thing by March.

I'm thinking it might not ever open.

It will be better for WDW if it never does. This attraction is as horrible as Stitch, Tiki Room Under New Management, and the Imagination redo. Someone needs to put their foot down and say, "no more!"

I have heard a few rumblings that if the problems are not fixed then that very well might happen.. WDW does not want another SGE on their hands.

It has far deeper ramifications too.

Go on, Tinsel Head. Haunt them from the grave. :sohappy:

Ugh

This seemed like a bad idea to begin with. Crush worked because of the originality of the concept. This is nothing innovative, if anything, it seems like a weaker version of a previous attraction. They are ripping themselves off.

Second, having a show focus on comedy and how funny the jokes are NEEDS TO HAVE REALLY FUNNY JOKES! Comedy is hard. I feel like this concept wasn't thought through completely. If the performance bombs, does the show outcome change? And as Krusty the Clown once said, "Talk to the audience?! This is gonna be death..."

Third, it has no reason to be in TL, but thats been discussed to death.

I really hope this never opens, and they get back to work coming up with a better attraction to fill the space. I feel like Disney's trying to nurse along a puppy that was born sickly. Pull the plug, its not gonna get better.

I really hope it never opens. (I thought I would never say that) As said before I agree that it was a bad idea to start with. Once I saw the queue I was sure that this wasn't a good idea. I think they should have just taken Time Keeper out of the seasonal position. (At least Time Keeper was funny) I'm actually glad this has gotten bad reviews because again as said before it might stop this character disaster. :D

Worse than Stitch, you say? It sounds to me like an alternate version of the Jungle Cruise skippers. Except that nobody's laughing.

Let's give it a chance..... it aints opens yets. Theys stills learnings.
Exactly. At least they are taking their time with this and trying to get it right.

Personally, I was hoping this thread would turn into another theming arguement. I really can't get enough of the Tomorrowland/Epcot has been destroyed threads. I feel a little empty if someone is not lamenting the death of Horizons somewhere... /joke

IS the design team who came up with SGE also the ones responsible for this?
If so, I would think pink slips would be in order here. If not, is it any of the Pixar folks? What gives? It seems to me, without seeing the attraction firsthand, they are going at Tomorrowland half cocked

That's interesting because the last four shows I atteneded everyone was having a great time, and everyone in the theatre gave it a four (very good) or five (great) when asked about what you think of the show. Only one person gave it a one (poor) rating in the 400-some total of people inside. So either you got a bad crowd and show, or you misjudged the thoughts of the 399 people around you. But after seeing the show about five times, I think that the show is on track to be a hit. And after all, the show is changing by the hour, so it's hard to say that you know that the show is a bomb. Besides, if the show you saw really was as awful as you say, they took you remarks, and that means? The show can only get better.
