Hurricane Irma

Everyone keeps texting me their Zello usernames. I don't even understand what the app does.

EAST!! Please please please Irma.. GO EAST!! I can't even look at this.

I don't even know what to root for. VERY east is good. A little east is eye wall over my house.

West is getting us up here.

Zello makes your phone work like a walkie talkie, supposedly when you have no service. Everyone down here is downloading it.

Also LYNX activated their Emergency Operations Center and they too will suspend service when winds hit 35 mph or flash flooding is occurring.

I checked on marinetraffic.com and there were no boats there for the most part.

Thank you! Does that show all boats, even ones that are anchored? Or only moving ones?

Most we've spoken with, even friends, not really taking it seriously enough IMO.

This is the FIRST time that I feel like all of my friends have taken it seriously...all besides one anyway. No one is left in Zone A except him though, some have gone north, quite a few are still in SoFla but west of Federal.

The one left was able to get two flights, for his wife and their child leaving Wednesday, he was supposed to fly out today. Now staying bc his flight was cancelled. He's all the way east on the east side of the intracoastal, across from the beach.,but says he's "confident in the strength of his home". We'll see.. I think he'll end up moving. I think I'm texting/calling him as much as his wife is.lol

Tell your friends to Go West!!! People must take this one seriously.

Universal will close at 7 PM Saturday and will remain closed through Monday. SeaWorld and Busch Gardens will close 5 PM tomorrow and remain closed through Monday. Disney I'd assume will close tomorrow evening and remain closed Sunday and possibly Monday (Disney needs to close the buses, monorails, and Minnie Van's when sustained winds hit 35 MPH).
They will absolutely be closed Monday.

A couple of my friends and co-workers are very nonchalant about Irma. It really annoys me how casual people treat hurricanes, especially one like this. One of them still isn't convinced its coming up the central state and won't prepare until tomorrow . He has a two year old, which makes it all the worse. Hope he wised up since I last saw him.

Hopefully he'll be able to buy preparations!

I have to say this, I am So Proud of how ready Florida seems to be.. and how they are constantly replenishing fuel and supplies.
They've come a long way. It gives a little hope that the aftermath will be dealt with as swiftly as possible.

Just saw 2 people on bikes in Mallory Square on a webcam.

I just know there's going to be at least one idiot Conch standing outside when it hits. :(

We just went on Jungle Cruise and the boat was named Irma.

OMG. Appropriate I guess.lol

I don't know what flood zone your friend is in, again I hate to keep bringing Hugo but that is what I know. the local evac building was the local high school which was inudated with the storm surge. They were standing on tables putting kids in the ceiling. from what I have seen they are predicting a major storm surge on the west coast Naples south. Tell him to get out!!!

Fake - but from a disaster standpoint if they spun down generators and shed non critical loads it would speed recovery because load could be reapplied logically. trouble is you need to be able to shed load while spinning down generators as too much power is just as big a problem as too little as those electrons have to go somewhere once generated.

This is where the smart grid could be useful unfortunately smart grid is seen as an excuse to not build generation capacity and security is a real problem also.

Officially issued for Orlando area..

Forecast winds are below that of Charley in 2004

1131 AM EDT Fri Sep 8 2017

...HURRICANE WATCH IN EFFECT...

A Hurricane Watch means Hurricane wind conditions are possible
somewhere within this area and within the next 48 hours

* LOCATIONS AFFECTED
- Orlando
- Apopka
- Christmas

* WIND
- LATEST LOCAL FORECAST: Equivalent Cat 1 Hurricane force wind
- Peak Wind Forecast: 60-80 mph with gusts to 95 mph
- Window for Tropical Storm force winds: Sunday afternoon
until Monday afternoon

- CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Extreme
- The wind threat has remained nearly steady from the
previous assessment.
- Emergency planning should include a reasonable threat for
major hurricane force wind greater than 110 mph of
equivalent Category 3 intensity or higher.
- To be safe, aggressively prepare for the potential of
devastating to catastrophic wind impacts. Efforts should
now be underway to secure all properties.
- Extremely dangerous and life-threatening wind is possible.
Failure to adequately shelter may result in serious injury,
loss of life, or immense human suffering.

- POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Devastating to Catastrophic
- Structural damage to sturdy buildings, some with complete
roof and wall failures. Complete destruction of mobile
homes. Damage greatly accentuated by large airborne
projectiles. Locations may be uninhabitable for weeks or
months.
- Numerous large trees snapped or uprooted along with fences
and roadway signs blown over.
- Many roads impassable from large debris, and more within
urban or heavily wooded places. Many bridges, causeways,
and access routes impassable.
- Widespread power and communications outages.

* FLOODING RAIN
- LATEST LOCAL FORECAST:
- Peak Rainfall Amounts: Additional 8-12 inches, with locally
higher amounts

- CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Moderate
- The flooding rain threat has remained nearly steady from
the previous assessment.
- Emergency planning should include a reasonable threat for
moderate flooding where peak rainfall totals notably exceed
amounts conducive for flash flooding and rapid inundation.
Rescues and emergency evacuations are possible.
- To be safe, earnestly prepare for the potential of
significant flooding rain impacts.
- Dangerous flooding is possible. Failure to take action may
result in serious injury or loss of life. If flood related
watches and warnings are issued, heed recommended actions.

- POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Significant
- Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations
and rescues.
- Rivers and tributaries may quickly become swollen with
swift currents and overspill their banks in a few places,
especially in usually vulnerable spots. Small streams,
creeks, canals, and ditches will overflow.
- Flood waters can enter some structures or weaken
foundations. Several places may experience expanded areas
of rapid inundation at underpasses, low-lying spots, and
poor drainage areas. Some streets and parking lots take on
moving water as storm drains and retention ponds overflow.
Driving conditions will become hazardous with some road and
bridge closures.

* TORNADO
- LATEST LOCAL FORECAST:
- Situation is somewhat favorable for tornadoes

- CURRENT THREAT TO LIFE AND PROPERTY: Elevated
- The tornado threat has remained nearly steady from the
previous assessment.
- Emergency planning should include a reasonable threat for
isolated tornadoes, mostly with shorter and narrower damage
paths.
- To be safe, prepare for the potential of limited tornado
impacts.
- Listen for tornado watches and warnings. Be ready to
shelter quickly if a tornado approaches.

- POTENTIAL IMPACTS: Limited
- The occurrence of isolated tornadoes can hinder the
execution of emergency plans during tropical events.
- A few places may experience tornado damage, along with
power and communications disruptions.
- Locations could realize roofs peeled off buildings,
chimneys toppled, mobile homes pushed off foundations or
overturned, large tree tops and branches snapped off,
shallow-rooted trees knocked over, moving vehicles blown
off roads, and small boats pulled from moorings.

Guess we'll see how tough Cindys castle really is !

They've done a lot over the past several years.

I don't think we will ever see 6 million people without power, majority 20+ days, again.
They learned that year, and they improved.

I have been. All evacuations are supposed to be completed today, a lot of people just find it easier to stay in the area at this point. Most likely he will move a couple of miles west.. or else his wife will have his head.lol
