Hurricane Irma

They indicated the eye is beginning to move off Cuba.

To paraphrase Horace Greeley, "Go West, Irma, go West"
Thanks, but no thanks. That would probably put it right through my back yard in southeast Alabama. Even on the current path we are expecting tropical storm force winds here Monday night.
The only good "path" would be immediate dissipation....

They have their own power plant? I knew they had their own waste treatment facility. Hopefully that means they can get power restored quickly, especially to the resorts.

Yep, behind MK. I'm not sure exactly how much it produces though. It should be able to withstand the hurricane so hopefully no power will be lost, at least to the resorts.

EDIT: @danlb_2000 said they produce around 40% so hopefully that's enough.

I have a feeling they will do what they did last year. Apparently by Monday evening the hurricane will be gone. I suspect they will open Disney springs or portions of it. The parks are questionable depending on the severity.

Makes sense. Get the resorts back online and then DS so guests can get food and let the kids run around.

The resorts are probably priority 1. Guests no parks are out of the question so the next best thing is to get the resorts back up to 100 percent. Disney springs is next priority because once open even if only certain places are open will make guests feel like things are normal.

On a side note, silly question what happens to the animals at animal kingdom?

They have pens for many of them. So my guess is they're spending the next 48 hours in them.

I think most resorts /major hotels have some type of back up system. At least to the main areas. If you are staying at a roach motel on 192, good luck

Most of the larger Disney hotel buildings have diesel generators for emergency systems. The outter buildings which have guest rooms do not. Forget about AC since the chiller plants probably wouldn't have emergency power.

For those on this thread who are FSU students, FSU had opened a shelter for students who don't live on campus.

MCO is not a shelter. They are very good to emphasize that in all their alert bulletins.

Not the actual airport. Many large airports have hotels either right at the airport or nearby. Those are usually the ones an airline gives you a voucher for.

It just got real in the Tallahassee area. Wakulla County (directly south of Tallahassee and on the Gulf) is under a Hurricane Warning.

I think at least part of the generation they have is fueled by biogas from the waste treatment facility. No waste, no biogas. So unless they have the ability to use alternate fuel such as natural gas they may not have much generation with the park shut down except for motels.
The greater issue is getting the power from the generation to the motels. Much of their electrical system is underground but some of it, including transmission lines, are overhead.

A FB friend posted to expect power outages for up to 5 days. Being Tallahassee, I believe it. I can say this much: If I'm still without power Saturday morning, driving to WDW for my scheduled trip on 9/16 will be an easy decision.
