Hello Friends!

My husband (Josh) and I (Heather) just returned yesterday from a great trip and I can't wait to share all of the crazy and fun details here soon!!

After a good long nap, we got ready for dinner and called an Uber to take us to the Contemporary. We were having dinner at California Grill for the first time. We were seated near the open kitchen area.

IMG_0832.jpg

Our waiter gave us some recommendations. We both chose the same exact things. We started with the Spicy Kazan Sushi roll which was tasty.

IMG_0834.jpg

For our entree, we had the Oak Fired Filet of Beef.

IMG_0835.jpg

So when we received this, we started eating and someone from the kitchen ran over and said oh we forgot to put the sauce on the steak and handed us a little sauce cup with the sauce in it. I really don't like to make a stink about things, so we just carried on, but for the amount of money that you pay to eat at the Cali Grill, I feel like they should have taken our dish back and prepared it correctly, but I kept it to myself and ate, LOL. I tried to "dip" my steak in the sauce, but it was so strong that I think it's meant to be more of a glaze on the steak rather than dunk it in. Josh said he was glad they hadn't put it on there because he didn't like it, but I just felt like if we had gotten the way it was meant, it would have tasted better. Overall, the steak was OK. I did like the carrots. The carrot puree under the potatoes really didn't have a flavor and the potatoes were just potatoes. I was underwhelmed, honestly.

For dessert, we chose the Lemon Chiffon Cake. This was really yummy.

Our reservation was at 9pm. There was a Halloween party this night, so the fireworks were at 10:15, so it worked perfectly for us to finish up and go out to the observation deck to watch the fireworks.

IMG_0839.jpg

It was neat seeing it lit up for Halloween from a distance and really cool seeing the fireworks from there. I do wish it had been a HEA night, but was still enjoyable.

California Grill...I'm glad I tried it once and had a nice time and a fun experience with the fireworks and all, but for the price, I felt like the food could have been better.

All in all, we had a WONDERFUL first full day in Disney and did so much and experienced lots of new things!

After our adventurous morning, we were ready for some lunch. Just as we walked out a bus pulled up to the little station there outside of the stables. We rode the internal bus and made our way up to the main station, I guess you'd call it? There we got on a bus to Disney Springs. We looked to see if any reservations interested us, but decided we would just do a quick service once there. We landed on Polite Pig which was a first for us.

I started out with a Sangria which was very good!

I ordered the Brisket sandwich with waffle fries.
View attachment 742584

Josh's entrée was the star of the show. He got the Fried Chicken Sandwich with mac-n-cheese. This was sooooo good! Josh ended up giving me half of it because I loved it so much! I will return for this again. The service was wonderful here as well. I was very happy with our choice for lunch.

Where we were sitting, you could see the Bourbon Bar. Josh is a bourbon collector and has many bottles at home, so naturally as we were leaving, he wanted to check out what they had.

And this is where "Vacation Josh" emerged. So most days, Josh is very budget conscious, always wants to know prices of things, etc., but when we go on vacation, eventually "Vacation Josh" makes an appearance. He liked what he saw and decided we should sit at the bar and have another drink as he looked over the menu. Yeah....not the regular bar menu, but the premium menu.

After about five minutes, he said what the heck, I'm going for it.... The bartender had to pull out a ladder to get it from the very top.

Yes, that is $250 for ONE OUNCE of Bourbon!

View attachment 742587
Happy man! He said it was amazing. He works extremely hard, so I was happy he treated himself...kinda....😂

I stuck with another Sangria.

Now that we were broke we went straight back to the room. :hilarious: J/K, we walked around a bit. I had to go to the Christmas store and get my ornament for the trip. Eventually we were ready for a nap and did head back to the resort. Since we had a later lunch, I was able to push our dinner reservation back, so rest and relaxation until then.

That's some good bourbon!

Thank you so much for posting that special bourbon menu! My husband, R, and I have always loved Polite Pig. FYI, they still give a 10% or 15% discount (can't remember which) for those paying with a Disney Visa, just need to ask for it. I think their Cobb salad tastes better than the one at Hollywood Derby (although the way it's prepped at the Derby is better). Since our last trip, he's really fallen down the bourbon hole and now owns about 80 bottles and he's always trying to get to our local ABC stores during allocated drops and he always loses on the state lotteries for these fancy bottleds lol. We've been house hunting and I told him, he's in charge of packing all of those bottles!!! We have started getting used liquor boxes for the store to make it easier lol. I've always loved bourbon but he used to hate it. I'm not really sure what changed though but now the next time we go to Polite Pig, I know we're going to be ordering some of the rare pours. Now I know what to expect the damage to be :)

Happy to help! :joyfull: The bourbon collecting has become quite popular I think. Seems like all of my husbands coworkers do it and they are always picking up bottles for each other. My husband does the raffles and goes to special sales and waits in line to hopefully score an allocated bottle. He actually just recently won a bottle in a raffle. In fact, while we were waiting for a show in Disney he got an email for a raffle and made me get on and fill out an entry also. 😂 For his big birthday a few years ago, I bought him a personalized whiskey barrel to store his bottles in. It has a lazy Susan in it and the top has our last name engraved. I figured it would be a nice family heirloom to pass down.

This one is not his but from the Etsy page I ordered it from:

This is the inside of Josh's barrel which is now way more full then this and he even has bottles stacked on top now. :hilarious:
It lights up when you open the door.

When we moved those liquor boxes are what we used and they worked perfectly! Happy House Hunting.

Wed., August 30th

Idalia had arrived!

We watched the Weather Channel for a good bit that morning. I mean what's a hurricane without a little Jim Cantore?
IMG_0842.jpg

There had been no closure announcements other than the waterparks and putt putt, so how would we spend the day as the outer bands of Idalia made it's way across Orlando? We were going to Epcot, baby!! At 7am, I joined the Guardians virtual Q and got boarding group 5! Would this be an indication of the crowd level?

As we were getting ready, I thought, hey let me check on what would have been our flight in that morning. Ya'll...it was currently boarding! How?? I'm still baffled by that.

We were switching resorts today, so we decided we wanted to bring our luggage over to Gran Destino. As we walked out of our room with all our luggage it was downpouring! We suited up in our rain gear and raced to the lobby, trying to stay under the overhangs as much as possible. We took an Uber over to Gran Destino and left our bags at Bell Services before getting on a bus to Epcot.
IMG_0843.jpg

It was just us and another family of 3 on the bus with us. As we arrived, it was a ghost town. We walked straight in and got in the line that had formed near Spaceship Earth. There probably wasn't even 75 people. The castmembers were in such good moods and having a good time with the few guests. Of course, Test Track was not opening, so most people were going to be headed the same direction. We were walked to the breezeway next to Connections and gathered there until it was time for early entry.
IMG_0845.jpg

At the time it was just drizzling, but almost as soon as early entry opened, the rain and wind started. We had decided to rope drop Frozen. Needless to say the walk back to Norway was interesting to say the least, but we made it! We walked straight to our boat and Josh and I had the boat to ourselves. I'm so annoyed because I had so many ride photos missing. I put in requests for them on the website, so if by some chance I get them, I will share them at the end of this report.

As we came out of Frozen, we walked back up to the front and got on Soarin. We were able to ride in B, front row, center! It makes such a huge difference. By the time we were walking out of there, we got the alert that our Boarding Group was called. We were both so excited to finally ride. There was no waiting, we zoomed all the way through.
IMG_0847.jpg

IMG_0848.jpg

We got "One Way or Another". I was really hoping for "September" because I was in fact born on the 21st night of September so it's always been one of my favorite songs because of that. But One Way wasn't bad.

As we were getting off, Josh didn't say a word. The small room was crowded when we got to the bottom of the stairs because everyone was trying to put on their raingear before walking outside. Once outside, he still didn't say anything. That's when I knew he wasn't feeling well. He didn't get sick or anything, but he was woozy for a bit. I loved the ride and didn't have an issues.

The ride photo for this one did show up and I laughed because his face looks like regret!
IMG_2825.JPG

Josh needed a break so we went to Starbucks and got a coffee and pastry. We sat and enjoyed those for a bit. While waiting, I checked the app. Wait times were so low for everything in the park. After our break, we chose to make the trek back to ride Remy. But first, Jammitors! They were doing their show in the breezeway.
IMG_0849.jpg

The rain had slowed down as we we walked back....briefly!
IMG_0850.jpg

IMG_0851 (1).jpg

The closer we got to Remy, the more it started coming down again. As we got to France, I noticed a couple who were pushing a toddler in a stroller and none of them had raingear on. The toddler was getting drenched in the stroller. I saw many kids in fact getting drenched in their strollers. I felt so bad for them. Most of them were crying and not having a good time at all. We got to the overhang in front of Remy and had a hard time getting through because so many people were camped out to avoid the rain. As we get to the entrance of the ride, a lady RUNS out the door...RUNS on slippery wet ground holding a baby that couldn't have been more than 3 months old, no cover over the baby. I cringed and prayed she didn't face plant the pavement holding onto that sweet baby!

We walked right onto our mouse. I'm just not a big fan of this ride. This was the 2nd time I've ridden and it's ok. I'll probably do it again for Cam because he hasn't ridden it yet, but it's not a favorite. When we got out, it was still coming down!!! The water was starting to make big puddles. Up until then, our feet had stayed fairly dry, but they were now soaked. Well, we were already wet, so why not trek BACK up to the front again.
IMG_0853.jpg

So a back story...I've always silently accused Josh of using too much laundry detergent when washing clothes, but I never say anything because...well hello he's doing laundry and I'm not about to make complaints over him helping with household chores! As we were walking in the monsoon SUDS start coming out of the top of his sneaker! I was DYING laughing. I thought I would fall over in the rain, I was laughing so hard. I took this opportunity to ask him how much soap he puts in the washer and sure enough he's been putting double the amount 😂 just typing this has me laughing all over again. It was hilarious! I noticed other people looking down at his shoe, that's how sudsy it was! I wish I had taken a picture, but it was pouring big time.

Josh’s expression of regret may be funny, but I see your @TrolleyFollower91 eyes! 🤣

And Guardians followed by Remy??!! Were you trying to kill the Bubble Man??!!!

I was waiting to see who the first person to notice would be b/c I was like OMG I have an Em face! 😂

How anyone could go to WDW without a rain cover for their stroller is beyond me! It’s Florida, you have to be prepared for rain every day!!

p.s. Your rain jacket is adorable!

I couldn't believe it either and especially knowing it was going to be bad pretty much all day.

Thanks! I got it from amazon and it was long and great quality. It worked perfectly. I wasn't trying to brave a hurricane in a thin poncho!

My husband is obsessed too! In fact, he has a barrel in our garage from when he & some friends did a private barrel selection at Four Roses. I need to show him this picture for an idea of what to do with the barrel!

That's neat! Josh loves his and his "man cave" smelled like bourbon for a year. The Whiskey Workshop is where I ordered it from and they turn them into all kinds of cool things. You should check it out for some ideas. They are on Etsy, but also have a website and instagram.

I’m quite late, but caught up!

I love that you’re making the best of the low crowds in the rain! But he parents without the jackets - how?? At least grab a poncho! Everyone knew a hurricane was coming!

Thanks for reading!

Yes, it was totally worth enduring for the low crowds. However, had my son been with us it may have been different. If he's miserable and not having a good time, none of us are and that's not what I want on vacation. So I do find we pushed ourselves more this trip with it just being the two of us.

Once we arrived to the land pavilion again, Josh went the bathroom to clean up his shoe bubbles. :hilarious:
Then we went on Living with the Land.
IMG_0854.jpg

IMG_0855.jpg

And we went on Soarin' again because why not? While waiting to board Soarin' we both agreed that we felt like we had had enough of the rain and wet socks, but we still hadn't gotten our room ready text yet. So we said as soon as we got it, we would head out. It was around 11:30 at this point and we were starting to get hungry, but the thought of huddling around a garbage can with food and wine samplings didn't appeal to us, so Josh asked if I would look and see if I could "get a reservation for that place in the pyramid in Mexico". He's always been intrigued by it. It's been over 20 years since I've eaten there and I know there are an abundance of mixed reviews. Low and behold, there were many reservations in Epcot to be had. We had our choice of anything, so I booked one for noon.

It's exhausting to think about how many times we crossed the park. But off we went! The mariachi band was playing inside the pavilion so we got to enjoy them while we waited a very short time for our table.
IMG_0857.jpg

IMG_0858.jpg

We ordered some queso which was very good and the salsa was ok. It had bit of smoky flavor to it. I also had a margarita. This was just your basic marg, but I enjoyed it very much.
IMG_0859.jpg

For my entrée, I got the chicken enchiladas and was very impressed. I really enjoyed them. I love plantains too so I was glad to have those on the side.
IMG_0860.jpg

My husband, who requested Mexican food, orders a Cesar salad with shrimp. Um, ok... I didn't even get a picture, but he said it was good and ended up eating half of my enchiladas which he really liked. San Angel ended up being surprisingly much better than I anticipated. Our waiter was great too. While at lunch, I saw on the app that Test Track had opened, so we headed there after.

IMG_0861.jpg

IMG_2827.JPG

I'm looking at Josh like I still can't believe he ordered a Cesar salad.

We went on Spaceship Earth before we decided to leave even though we hadn't got our room ready text yet. It was around 2 or so and Josh suspected we'd get it soon. Sure enough, we got it while on the bus over!

Finally got all caught up! I enjoyed hearing about your dinner at CG which is always our splurge restaurant. I agree that the presentation and possibly the meat overall might have tasted better had they remembered to do the sauce first thing. It is a very expensive dinner which makes those types of things more disappointing. I loved that Josh splurged for the expensive bourbon although I probably would have been thinking to myself of all the things that we could treat ourselves to on the trip with that money. 🤣 🤣 🤣 My husband was introduced to bourbon last year and has quite the collection now too although not as many as Josh. Sorry he felt a bit off when he was through with GOTG. I felt the same way and told my husband that it was a one and done ride for me. He absolutely loves the ride and gets so excited to see what song he'll get to experience. The low crowds were worth enduring the heavy rains!!! Crazy that your original flight took off with no issues.

Right.. it wasn't bad, just didn't feel worth the splurge to us.

I'm glad he splurged to. When we were on our Disney cruise earlier this year, he was very close to having it onboard. One of the lounges had it. I think the one they had was $300 for a pour and he wouldn't do it. Only bad thing is when he had a glass of bourbon this weekend he was like well this doesn't compare. 😂

Josh seemed to have a lot of motion sickness issues the whole trip. It seems it gets worse each year.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with all of R's bottles when we move because right now we don't have space for half of what he has. The allocated ones are in one of my antique pieces hidden away, others are spread throughout my kitchen so much so that I struggle to find room for my potatoes. And then unopened bottled are hanging out under the bed away from sight. I hope he doesn't buy anymore until after the move lol. We can never find any of the Wellers, which I see in your pic, because they are always gone before we get to the store. We saw one house for sale that was FULL of rare bourbon and I seriously thought my husband would croak :) Candleberry has a candle that smells EXACTLY like a bourbon warehouse when the fumes are released from the barrels. It's soooo good.

And I don't know what made me laugh more - the sudsy feet in the rain or him ordering a Caesar salad at the Mexican restaurant. He definitely gave you a lot of stories that will live on in memory that day LOL.
