Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree

There were Max, Buff, Melvin heads in the "Mile Long Bar" at Walt Disney World back in the day too...nearly certain those moved at the least/may have had some audio. The "Mile Long Bar" at WDW got absorbed into an expansion of the adjacent Pecos Bill Cafe in the late 1990s.

It's been a minute since I've been to Disneyland...is there an interior wall in "Hungry Bear..." where these would fit?

Nothing fully interior but there is a lower level covered seating area where they could go.

Since recent Disneyland additions have included Rosita at tropical hideaway and the ostrich at the treehouse - I see this definitely being a possibility.

Woah. Childhood memory UNLOCKED!

I have a vivid memory of standing in here with my parents. I was 4 years old. I didn't realize that this was Disneyland.

It was the Mile Long Bar in Bear Country. It is now the Winnie The Pooh gift shop.

It was just a snack bar, but it had that mirror effect that made it look like it was... wait for it... a mile long.

WDI in the 1960's and 70's were truly the masters at their craft. All the Parks Blog posts and Communications Majors in the world in 2024 can't equal what those real Imagineers did with real things in a real park circa 1970 with modest budgets, and none of them had a Communications degree to their name.

But those Imagineers were showmen. And a true showman beats a Communications Major and a Blog post every damn time.

I ate here for the first time on my last trip, and for a burger and fries joint at a theme park, I was actually impressed.

I'm not confident that a theme park can pull off barbeque, though, which takes a very specific set up and skill set to get right,

The problem is you end up with theme park ribs that are a lower quality than most restaurants serve. They are also baked and brought out to a grill to warm up. The sauce is typically already on it when unfrozen. Sometimes the meat doesn't taste much different from a theme park turkey leg. Even Knott's ribs are not that great compared to the real thing.

How hard would it be to bring this back?

That was a great place to grab a late night hot chocolate during those after-hours corporate events. Followed up with a few of those clunky awesome games at the adjacent Teddi Barra's Swingin' Arcade.

I remember they had this golf machine but themed to the Country Bears.

Yes. I believe it was Big Al putting with his guitar.

This nimble fella was there as well:

I seem to remember an old baseball game as well, but I can't recall if it was bear themed.
They definitely had the sister to the Penny Arcade "Electricity is Life" shocker machine. (I remember that one ramped up slowly, while the other stayed low until a jolt at the end.)

We now return you to your previously scheduled B-B-Q talk, already in progress...

It was this one but themed to the bears. What I wouldn't give for one of these machines. Disney probably dropped them off a building into a dumpster.

I'll add that I have no expectations of actual BBQ being served here. lol Regal Eagle wishful thinking aside.

Just meat with BBQ sauce.

But I'll note that my favorite menu item from the otherwise pretty tasteless :p Pixar Fest was the BBQ Brisket potato they've had at Troubadour Tavern. That thing is terrific when the meat is at least slightly fresh rather than dried out leftovers, which I did get one time. But it's a perfectly contained meal - BBQ brisket and cole slaw on a baked potato with a pickle slice. I wish they'd keep it.

From Fresh Baked today. Looks like the whole sign is changing. At first I thought that they were saving the “Hungry Bear” on the top but it looks like those letters have been scraped too. I could be wrong though. Also it looks like the new entrance to TBA is going to be where the old FP stations were. I wonder if they are planning on using the perimeter of the front of the mountain as flex space for an extended HM queue when needed.
