How long before we start seeing tattoos on Disney CM's?

In my case, the tattoos I have on my body are very symbolic of stuff I dealt with in my past and mean the world to me to have them immoralized on my skin. It's a form of artwork.
I work in a very professional field where I have to keep them covered, but the rules are getting slightly more laid back and even the CEOs have full sleeves now.

However, I can't say the same for my piercings. That's just on a different page completely.

That’s always been my mantra about tattoos: depending on your profession, you may need to cover them up and that’s something to keep in mind when people consider them (specifically, the placement). I have a colleague in upper management who has full sleeves. No one would ever know because he always wears a buttoned shirt/suit jacket. To put it in perspective, I work for a global, chemical analysis/biotech company, so appearance on a global stage is important. Most people understand there’s a time and place for their tattoo exposure.

there is some really decent tattoo concealer... unless its a face tattoo, tattoos can be hidden and I don't see this changing at Disney and I'm kind of glad. While I have tattoos they are not on display when I am at work. There is something carnie about a cast member being tatted up.. but maybe that's me.

I think eventually it will be allowed to a certain degree simply because of the popularity of tattoos lately. It will always matter what the tattoos are though (just like you can't wear a t-shirt to the parks with swear words for example). Also, I'm sure characters will never ever be able to display their tattoos for obvious reasons.
Having said that, I really don't like that you compare tattoos to being untidy/dirty. A piece of art on someone's body is not the same as a food stain.

I don't care about tattoos, but you have to understand that perception is real. You might be a great person, but face tats or even visible tats in more common areas give off a different vibe. Not everyone can be known and understand by a glance, so stereotyping comes into play. That's why appearance matters. If you let people wear scruffy clothes, have whatever tattoos, facial hair, and piercings, the image portrayed isn't going to be what Disney wants.

This is reality. There have been countless psychological studies done on this. Stereotypes are part of reality. If I show you a picture of 2 men, 1 with a suit, crew cut, and shaven and the other with greasy hair, a goatee, and death metal tattoos, you're going to have some opinions.

I liked the post so you might want to up your number.
I do not however want visible tattoos at Disney. The like was for the second paragraph.

So it seems that in today's age it's becoming the trend for more and more people to have tattoos. My wife and I are tattoo free and if I'm honest I've never liked the look of tattoos and find them kind of ugly. That being said I'm sure there's some people who find me kind of ugly too, so I'm not suggesting people shouldn't get tattoos based on my tastes and it's up to them what they do with their bodies. I also understand that a person's desire to have a tattoo doesn't reflect on their ability to do a certain type of job, so for instance we shouldn't think a doctor with tattoos is any less qualified or capable than one without them. Basically I'm firstly trying to clarify here that I have no issue with those who want or have tattoos, neither am I questioning their choice to have them.

I do however applaud certain companies rules such as Disney's, to have their employees cover their tattoos up whilst in front of their customers. Whilst I accept some think this 'discriminatory' (and technically is probably is), I find it on a par with expecting employees to dress to a certain standard as appearances are important to many companies and their customers expect and demand a certain image from their employees.

However times are a changing as they say and where I work in the UK used to enforce the rule of tattoos not being visible at work, a few years ago however they let that slide and now several colleagues openly display their tattoos. Now some of these people are my friends and I certainly don't judge them for having them, also they have no effect on their in work performance which is why they're there at the end of the day. But (apologies to you tattoo people) I find big tattoos and especially neck, face and hand ones really off putting and really hope in a few years time I'm not seeing them on Disney CM's as I visit the parks. I compare it to CM's looking untidy or wearing food stained or dirty clothing whilst on duty, it's an appearance issue more than anything else.

But with the way things are going and the current popularity of multiple tattoos all over people's bodies, how long do you think it will be before we see CM's allowed to display them?

I can handle the tattoos it’s The guys in skirts I was bothered with in HS. I then had to explain that to my young children.

As long as Disney's overall business model includes an immersive resort experience (consistent with the idea of referring and viewing employees as "cast members"), adherence to a generic appearance will persist.

Personally with regards to visible tattoos in a work place as long as they are not offensive (flower or someones name) I don't see the problem
I personally have a koi carp in my upper arm and on my recent trip to WDW I had children point and say 'Nemo' in wonder.
There are good tattoos and there are bad tattoos.
Where the line is drawn between the two would be up to the big bosses to decide.
Do you offend people that don't like tattoos by having them on display.
or offend/discriminate against people with tattoos.
And I think the answer is you offend people that don't like them because discriminate is a lot scarier word to the big bosses than offend. A lot more trouble follows the word discriminate than offend.

I think most people here with tattoos understand this; as I stated previously, it seems to me that people here are intelligent enough to know when it is and is not appropriate to show them, which in turns means that the “perception is real”.

There was a time when men had tattoos and women wore jewelry, Now it is just the opposite.

There was a time when that mattered. Taking a moment to savor the fact it's gradually dying out.

Right. You don't go to an interview with your full sleeve showing, right?

I think a tattoo is worse than a food stain because you can easily wash off a food stain.

A cool thing about my visit Japan two years ago was that every swimming pool had a sign that said the equivalent of "No Swimming If You Have A Tattoo".

A cool thing about ignorant people is that most of them are old, unhappy old people and will die soon enough

Personally, I can't for the life of me understand why anybody would want a tattoo who isn't a sailor or convict.

But, tattoos are one of the examples of cultural values flowing upwards. Tattoos now seem a majority amongst the audiences visiting outdoor rock festivals, naturist venues and yes, Orlando theme parks.* Times change, generations change, fashion and social norms change. This will invariably reflect in changes in more formal environments too. As it should, perhaps. I am not conservative by any means, I just have classical taste.

* These three examples aren't picked random. They are instances where a lot of body is exposed. Do the tattooed prefer them for that reason (can show all that work), or is the frequenting of those venues reason to get a tattoo?
.

Classical taste? You mean like people who for thousands of years have had tattoss? That classical taste? Tattoos are not a "new" thing at all.

In my profession, no. I wouldn’t know how the hiring manager/interview panel may take it/feelings on tattoos so it’s always best to cover it up when in doubt.

BTW: not arguing with your initial comment; just trying to distinguish that people can have tattoos, cover them up appropriately, and have successful lives; there’s no need to label those with tattoos as intellectually inept, poor decision makers, convicts, etc. as others seem to try to convey in their posts

Never said anything about people with tattoos having unsuccessful lives. I said that there is an image that has to be considered at a family friendly resort like Disney and frankly in general in the service industry.

I never said YOU said it-I specifically said “others”.

Regardless, I will ding you for the portion of this comment referring to Disney’s image. Why would you care? If I remember correctly, you had said in the past that women in thong bikinis are okay at a family friendly resort like Disney; that standard bikini bottoms looked like “diapers”. I find that funny that tattoos on CMs are something to lift an eyebrow at but guests parading in thongs at WDW are okay in your book.
