How early do you put up your Christmas decorations? And when do you take them down?

For years, our dad would buy a tree on Christmas Eve as a "tradition", but all us kids suspected that it was to get the best deal on the scrawniest tree with the biggest bald spots he could find. It was always quite a challenge to decorate.

I don't remember exactly when we'd take it down but it was pretty soon after Christmas Day because of course the tree became a fire hazard almost immediately since it started off dry and dead-looking!

But it was obviously memorable!

I grew up on a farm with fields surrounded by woods, so you'd think there would be suitable Christmas trees out there. Every December, my dad would go out to the woods with us and we'd search and search for the ideal tree, but usually end up with some scrawny scrappy little tree, but once we decorated it , it always looked magical. I can even remember a couple of Christmases that we'd just have a few branches tied together sitting precariously in the stand, but we loved it anyway!

Two to three weeks before Christmas, and the tree gets taken down on New Year's Day. I like real trees, and leaving them up any longer usually results in way too many dropped needles!

Loved the Emmett Otter reference too - we always saved that, the Muppets Christmas, and Mr. Magoo's Christmas for Christmas Eve with just the 4 of us.

Love love love the Magoo, and was so bummed it wasn’t on TV last year.

Emmett is a big fave, and I love the outtakes & bloopers on the DVD.

They are releasing the soundtrack on vinyl LP on Black Friday! I need to keep one for myself.

The outside lights aren't to the extent of the Osborne but total around 9-10,000 lights.

Wow!

As someone who just called DirecTV to get them to lower my bill, and dragged my husband back to Walgreens with the GoodRx app to get a partial refund on his prescription, I’m kind of impressed with that!

We always bought a tree about a week before Christmas, then put on the lights and decorations on Christmas eve. My mom always impressed me by taking off all the decorations and lights on New Years Day. We had a lot of different strings of lights, so my dad would always write down the order in which we put them on so we'd know in what order to remove them. He was a pretty organized guy!

Put UP the tree? That's up for discussion:

Tree vs felines. Round 4 2018.

Round 1 2015: Felines 0 + Hoomans 1
Round 2 2016: Felines 1 + Hoomans 0
Round 3 2017: Felines 1 + Hoomans 0
Round 4 pending rewiring and new branch structures. Or... may just say screw it.

Ha! Been there. Have a dog now.

I start Oct. 1st. I decorate outside for Halloween and use most of the lights for both. I have a Nightmare Before Christmas theme so I can use more of the Christmas stuff for Halloween. All the lights in the yard are synchronized on 25 controllers. The lights run from end of 1st week of October to October 31. Then the Halloween stuff goes away and the last of the Christmas stuff goes out so that on Thanksgiving night the lights, which have not been lighting since Oct. 31, light up again for Thanksgiving dinner and nightly to New Years Eve. The tree, village and inside decorations start going up Thanksgiving weekend. I then have a New Years Eve party that I light up the backyard with lights synchronized on 25 more controllers that I start setting up the weekend after Thanksgiving. It all comes down New Years day.

Would you display the tree without decorations for the first several days? I've never heard of that before!

I can give you an example--if you have a real tree, it can take a few days for the branches to "settle" (fall a little). So if you wait a few days to decorate it, you won't have to do any adjustments/moving around of bulbs or garland, etc., due to any shifting of the branches. :)

We used to buy fairly large trees, and they'd have been tied up for a long time, so we let the branches "settle" for a few days. Also, I think it is or was a fairly common thing to decorate the tree on Christmas Eve, but we (and probably most people) didn't want to be going out and buying a tree on the day before Christmas.

In our house, the process USUALLY goes like this: IN A PERFECT WORLD, my DW does the indoor decoration and I take care of the outside...the 2 DD's help out with both. I try to get the outside finished during the week OF Thanksgiving and lit ASAP...my DW usually starts within a day or 2 of Thanksgiving. In our house, everything stays up until the feast of Epiphany (January 7th)
