There was a thread on this AAAAAAAAGES ago so i thought i'd make a new one.

How do you save money for your trip? Except from the obvious working and then just saving that money.

Do you do anything extra like

- Making lunches instead of buying them

Name yours!

I try not to spend any change, but lately, I been slacking!!! It's amazing how much $$$ you can save by not spending any. For our trip in Dec 2008, I saved all my change for a year and had close to $400!!!! I'm doing the same thing for my Dec trip this year. While I doubt it will be that much, it will still be some extra spending $$$ in my pocket, or should I say in my DS's hands!!! :ROFLOL:

Well, we figure we are saving all year long for it because we never go to movies, rarely dine out (only a very special occasion), usually hold a yard sale in the summer, one or two trips to the casino has always boosted our savings, and we save all our change year around. We figure we save $ too because we limit in park dining to one or two meals, do most of our dining outside the parks, stay offsite and drive rather then fly. Making these small and simple changes, enable us to stay l0 nights most trips!

We have a large jug (5 gal. water bottle) that we put all of are change in. Now that being said, here is how we save the big bucks. We started out by not spending $1.00 bills. If we wanted a cup of coffee, and had a $20 and a $1 in my pocket, I would buy the coffee with the $20. I would usually get back more $1's. No matter what I purchased, I would never spend the $1's. By the end of the week I would have as much as $20 in my pocket to put in the jug. Now we have gone one step further. We give ourselves an allowance for the week. Usually about $50.00. We take our lunches to work, and don't eat out as much. At the end of the week we have as much as $50 to $75 dollars that we can put in the jug. This year we are up to over $1,000 to put towards our vacation. And just as a side note, we don't spend $1 bills when we are on vacation. Makes for a very nice start to next years vacation. Let me warn you, this does become addictive. Good Luck, and Happy Savings.

I've done the change thing, and I love it. Recently I've started throwing every $5.00 bill I get into my jug with the change. In about 2 months I have over $200 just in $5.00 bills. That does not include any of my change.

$5.00 bills add up quickly.

I like the dollar idea myself. However with me having my pay check direct deposited into my bank and always using my debit card for everything I buy I never have cash on me.

Couple different things. We always get a nice tax refund, so we use that for the trip itself (hotel, airfare, tickets.) Whenever I get a good commission check, I put that towards it.

The biggest thing I do for spending money is about 5 months ahead, every morning when I come into work, I transfer $30 from my checking to a savings account. Comes out to about $600 per month. In 5 months, I'll have about $3,000 saved. Then I try to put aside an additional $2,000 from commission checks here and there, and we go down with $5,000.

I just cashed in my jug today. It was full of $5.00 bills as I stated above. In about six or so months I had about $600 worth of $5.00. When it was all said and done I had $1,459.03 in the jug which I put into a vacation savings account with my girlfriend. We are saving for a super trip!

Here's a pic.

Very nice looking money jug. I put all my change into a big jug and try to put as many $1s in there as possible. I cashed it in last summer after saving for a year and had over $600 in there. I think it is going to be a long time before I see that much money in there again though. I quit my second job this year. I find that I never have spare change anymore since I am not spending cash to buy soda, snacks, etc every night at work. I think I need to make an effort to spend more cash instead of just using my debit card for everything.

Where do you work and are they hiring? :animwink:

We just put $40 every two weeks in a savings account. But I made a cool chart to put on the fridge with a monetary goal and color in the progress as we go.

I was thinking the same thing too.

Your post also reminded me that I used to have $25 every two weeks taken out of my paycheck at my second job and put in a savings account. Of course that savings account hasn't seen any new money lately so I guess I have to find yet another way to save money.

I have a regular vacation club account at my credit union and direct deposit into it every payday. That usually covers my flight, resort and admission.

For dining & spending money, I can buy Disney gift cards at my grocery store, so every week when I do my regular shopping I pick up at least a $25 gift card. About once a month I budget for a $50 card. Adds up relatively painlessly. I also save my change, and when I get enough I cash it in for gift cards, too.

I like the Disney gift card idea. Do the cards lose value if you don't use them for a while after you buy them?

  1. Sign up for a credit card. We don't pay for airfare. We sign up for a credit card that offers 1-2 roundtrip tickets after first purchase. We then cancel the card. We know it could ding credit, but ours is fine, it rolls off after 3 years, and we're not buying anything big anytime soon.
  2. Use rewards points. We don't use cash, so the "keep the change" stuff doesn't really work for us. However, we do use our cash back rewards from our regular credit card to help out.
  3. ESPP. I work for a publicly traded company, so we have an employee stock purchase program at 85% of the price (and I put 15% of my salary in that). Whatever is left after paying property taxes (Texas property taxes are high because of no state income tax), goes to Disney World.

Nope - they never expire and they don't charge a service fee. They know they've got your money!

Disney has known for years that they have my money. I make regular donations. I'm definitely going to look into buying giftcards when I food shop though. Before you go on a trip do you combine them all into one big giftcard or do you just bring a stack of them with you?
