How Do You Go and Plan for Disney?

When you decide it's time to go to Disney, what is your process?

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
3) Do you fly or drive?
4) How long do you go?
5) How far in advance do you plan?
6) Dining Plan?
7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
9) Do you rent a car?
10) What park do you attend first?

Mine:
1) I typically don't care what it costs, but try to keep my spend reasonable, because I know I'll go again.
2) I try to get the best value, but don't put too much emphasis on the hotel because I'm always in the parks seemingly.
3) Always fly.
4) I go between 7-10 days.
5) I usually plan at least 3-6 months in advance, but have planned as much as a year in advance and as short as a month.
6) No dining plan, but I might the next time.
7) I typically book a deal through Travelocity or Expedia. Disney have given some deals in the past because I go so much.
8) Only WDW of course!
9) No car, Disney Trasnport only.
10) Magic Kingdom, always.

Your turn! Feel free to add.

My Respones in blue!

1) I have started saving February 2011 for December 2012 trip!
2) Nicest, cheapest off-site but close to property.
3) Usually I would prefer to drive, but 2012 we will be flying.
4) At least a week!
5) I have been planning this trip for 11 years! But really get into the planning starting 2 years out. I constantly keep checking AIrfare/Hotel Packages so I can have a GOOD idea of what the price will be so I can plan to save each month...disablility doesn't go far, so that's why I have to save 2 years out!
6) No Dining Plan
7) Expedia or Southwest is our mode of planning.
8) We will be going to Disney, and visiting Jeanie and Master at Coco Beach!(LOL)
9) Definitely renting a car since we are staying off proprty and want to do other things.
SOMETHING ELSE THAT MAKES ME A VERY BAD PERSON...I STOPPED PAYING ON 2 CREDIT CARDS IN ORDER TO SAVE FOR MY TRIP AND HAVE MONEY TO LIVE ON EACH MONTH! I KNOW ITS NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO, BUT WHEN YOU HAVE TO DECIDE TO PAY YOUR BILLS OR TO EAT AND HAVE ELECTRICITY, YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO! I FEEL BAD, BUT...
10) Depending what days are best according to books!

Oooo fun!

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
We access what we have and what we can afford, then maybe cut back on some spending to ensure security

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
We always aim for the Poly then see if we can swing it. If yes, then we automatically decide on there. If not, we see where else we like and what deals are going on. We just moved so we couldn't do the Poly this time and got a great deal at the Dolphin so we're staying there.

3) Do you fly or drive?
FLY! Driving for us, which I did as a kid, takes like 26 hours-oy.

4) How long do you go?
Usually 8 or 9 days

5) How far in advance do you plan?
Usually a year for the official planning-but I'm always planning for trips years away :D

6) Dining Plan?
Nope.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
We book through Disney but this time we couldn't because we're staying at the Dolphin.

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
We spend all our time at the Disney parks except for a half day a Universal and this coming trip we're spending at least a morning at Typhoon Lagoon.

9) Do you rent a car?
Yes-it's part of the experience for us.

10) What park do you attend first?
MK!!

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?

Save, for sure.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?

All Star Music is always our first choice. We've tried other resorts, and are still open to Moderate or Deluxe if the money was less of a concern, but I'd rather have a longer stay at All Star Music than a shorter vacation at a more expensive resort.

3) Do you fly or drive?

Drive, since we're only about 9 hours away, but we took the train once. Never doing that again.

4) How long do you go?

I've done a single day all the way up to one week. Right now I like spending four or five days in the parks within a seven day stay. That leaves some down time to relax, see a water park and do some shopping and resort hopping during our stay.

5) How far in advance do you plan?

Usually about six months, but once we decided halfway to Myrtle Beach that we'd rather go to Disney World, and just kept driving South.

6) Dining Plan?

Our upcoming June trip is the first time we're trying the current plan, though back on our honeymoon we used Magic Wishes for meals, and I did the Food N' Fun Plan back in the 90s.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?

Usually AAA, though several times we've been able to book a better AAA discount directly through Disney than we could with our travel agent...

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?

Walt Disney World only.

9) Do you rent a car?

Not before, but this upcoming trip we are so everyone can ride in one car.

10) What park do you attend first?

It depends on how things work to take best advantage of Extra Magic Hours. Usually we avoid the morning EMH park and plan to end the day at the evening EMH park or latest closing park. We'll only do two parks a day, with a short trip back to the hotel in between.

Wow, fun questions/post. Have a look at my answers if your're interested!

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
We've got a half decent savings, so we don't need to save up. For fiscal planning purposes I do include a WDW trip when I'm writing up our yearly budget at the beginning of January. Even if I'm not supposed to be planning a WDW trip this year :)

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
We pick out the hotel we want to stay at during our previous trip. Always on site. We usually spend half of a day touring a few hotels we know we might be interested in. It's a lot of fun to check out a few new hotels! We don't normally consider the deluxe hotels. They seem ridiculously expensive to me for the quality of the hotel. That pool at the Yacht & Beach Club will probably get me someday though.

3) Do you fly or drive?
Fly from Ottawa to Toronto/Montreal to Orlando. There aren't any direct flights from Ottawa or I wold definitely be taking one!

4) How long do you go?
Ten to fourteen days.

5) How far in advance do you plan?
I'm always planning :) I start up an excel spreadsheet with our detailed plans as soon as I buy our airplane tickets or book our hotel. So probably two hundred thirty days or so before our departure.

6) Dining Plan?
We usually only go during free dining. If free dining doesn't exist someday... I'm not sure what we would do. Probably buy the plan. It helps us to try new things and always get dessert (a good thing when you're on vacation).

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
Disney. I smile like a maniac when I get to hit the confirm button online :)

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
Last trip we spent two days at Universal. One for each park. We'll probably do the same next trip. I love the Mummy Ride and the Spider Man ride blows me away every time. The Forbidden Journey ride is great, but I feel like the actual ride it is a bit too 'in your face' with not enough story/mood.

9) Do you rent a car?
Nope. Disney transportation (buses, Magical Express - I wouldn't want to miss the sweet welcome and good bye videos) or Mears when we're heading off property.

10) What park do you attend first?
Different every time. Last trip we spent our first evening in Tomorrowland and our first full day at AK. I guess it depends on what dinner we have booked for the first night/day.

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
I pay for the trip with my Disney Visa Card, this way I have 6 months to pay off the trip with no interest.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
My goal is to stay at all of the Walt Disney World Resorts so I kind of mix them up. I asked my mom this year, since we are the ones going, and I gave her a choice of either the Beach or Yacht Club. She didn't care one way or the other, so I asked WDWMagic Members and the Beach Club won out. We are due to go back in 2013 and will most likely stay at a Value Resort.

3) Do you fly or drive?
We always fly.

4) How long do you go?
We usually go for 7 nights/8 days; this trip we are going 8 nights/9 days.

5) How far in advance do you plan?
I plan my trip as far as I can. My sister and I are already talking about where we will be staying in 2013. It will either be Pop Century or Art of Animation.

6) Dining Plan?
In 2006 we got the dining plan when it included tips and appetizers. In 2009 we got it again, but it did not include the tips and appetizers but we still enjoyed it. This year we are doing the dining plan again because it was free. We are a family who likes to eat, are not picky eaters, and don't mind taking time out of our touring to sit and eat, so I'm sure we will get it again in 2013. Of course, it will depend on if it's worth the value.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
In 2004, we went through a travel agent; in 2006, I booked it straight through Disney; in 2009 and this year I used an AAA travel agent.

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
In the past we have always just stayed in Disney World, however in 2013, we may venture to Universal.

9) Do you rent a car?
No.

10) What park do you attend first?
In the past, Magic Kingdom was always our first stop. This year, since we are staying so close to Epcot during the Flower & Garden show, we are going to go to Epcot first. We may head over to Magic Kingdom later, since we have a reservation at Kona Cafe that night.

Save
2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get?
Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
Used to have an RV, always stayed at Fort Wilderness---upcoming trip we decided on Pop Century over All Star Movies based on price and thought it looked pretty cool
3) Do you fly or drive?
Drove in RV---don't have it anymore but we will still drive down
4) How long do you go?
6-7 days
5) How far in advance do you plan?
not sure about our first 4-5 trips as I had nothing to do with the planning. Last 2-3 were anywhere from 6-12 months. We always have a pretty good idea when our next trip will happen. When my niece was born in 2006 we knew we'd be going after she turned 4, and that trip finally happens this April
6) Dining Plan?
No
7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
Disney
8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
First trip went to the ocean, Sea World, and Kennedy Space Center. Trips 2-7 only Disney
9) Do you rent a car?
No
10) What park do you attend first?
I think Animal Kingdom's the only park that hasn't been a first day park. Not positive but I think Magic Kingdom has been first most often

It's cool reading how others do it.

Sadly, it's making want to plan another trip right now. :)

I have to admit, I sometimes just plan a fake trip to see the cost, where I could stay, the days, etc.

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
Save? Nah. I charge it all to credit cards and figure it out later. (Not really, but unfortunately I do know people who think that way)

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
We recently bought into DVC so now we are trying to stay at all of them. Three down, four to go! I always stayed at an All Star before I got spoiled.

3) Do you fly or drive?
Fly. There are only two of us (no kids) so it is much cheaper.

4) How long do you go?
Usually one long trip (1 week) and one short trip (3-4 days) each year.

5) How far in advance do you plan?
I try to plan at least a year out so I can book our stay at the 11 month window. Some trips end up being "last minute" though which for me means 6 months out. I'm so "Type A" it drives my wife mad.

6) Dining Plan?
No. Tables in Wonderland is a better fit to our dining preferences.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
DVC

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
We've seen a couple of Space Shuttle launches but sadly will not be able to make it to any of the remaining ones. Aside from that, just WDW.

9) Do you rent a car?
No. I let Disney do the driving.

10) What park do you attend first?
Almost always EPCOT, my favorite. The only exception was when we stayed at Bay Lake Tower for the first time and had to see what walking to the Magic Kingdom was like.

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
I am always saving for my trips. $100 from every paycheck and all 1's and 5's go into the Disney fund.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
Most trips are either at the BCV or BL because of the DVC but other trips are usually at a value resort

3) Do you fly or drive?
Only fly now. Used to drive but would rather spend the time in WDW than I95

4) How long do you go?
Summer 13 days, Feb. 6 days, Oct. 3 days, Dec 3 days and Jan. 8 days.

5) How far in advance do you plan?
At least a year. Always have at least three trips planned on Mouse Manager.

6) Dining Plan?
Did it twice but not anymore.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
Disney

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
Only Disney lately. Every couple years we may venture out.

9) Do you rent a car?
No, only Disney transports

10) What park do you attend first?
EPCOT in the afternoon and MK at night

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
We usually charge it to our Disney Rewards Visa...we earn the points and have 6 months interest free to pay it off. We usually pay it off before we go and we use the card for purchases to get the 10% discount.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
We do consider where we want to stay. We really like POR so that usually tops our list but do consider other resorts. We like POP and mayconsider the new Art of Animation our next trip.

3) Do you fly or drive?
We have done both. We flew in Dec. and with 2 young children and the new scanners (which we didn't have to do, thankfully) we may not fly again. Long drive from CT but we enjoy it. Stay over 2 nights down and 2 nights back.

4) How long do you go?
9 nights/10 days

5) How far in advance do you plan?
booked last trip 10 months out...always thinking about another trip.

6) Dining Plan?
yes

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
We love our AAA agent...she is wonderful!

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
Disney only

9) Do you rent a car?
No...Disney transportation is all we need.

10) What park do you attend first?
It depends on our plans. Last time it was MK, trip before it was AK.

Heading for the great escape.
When you decide it's time to go to Disney, what is your process?

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money? Im loaded so its a mere bagatelle.
2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value? Stay deluxe, trty to avoid the trash
3) Do you fly or drive? Fly, its too far to swim
4) How long do you go? About 30 secs more if Ive been drinking
5) How far in advance do you plan? At an appropriate point
6) Dining Plan? Yes and no
7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)? I have no corporate loyalty and shop around.
8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc? I vist both parks and every ow and again Busch and Sea World. I dont travel that distance for a beach.
9) Do you rent a car? Yes though not on this trip.
10) What park do you attend first? Depends but usually we stay at Universal first so IoA.

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?
We have never saved for a trip. We either make monthly payments or pay for our trip with tax return.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?
We always think - we first decide, what can we afford - we usually stay moderate unless we are able to afford an upgrade to a deluxe. We are making our rounds - we love trying different resorts!

3) Do you fly or drive?
Driving is not an option - DH says it's way too long.

4) How long do you go?
We usually go for 6 days for that is all we can afford - we are hoping to make it 7 or 8 one of these days

5) How far in advance do you plan?
I LOVE booking at least 7 months - a year if I could. But 7 months at the least. I need the time to make payments!

6) Dining Plan?
First three trips, no - last two trips, yes! And yes for the next trip. I know there are mixed reviews on the dining plan but we love it!

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?
Our first three trips we booked through Expedia - never again. We now use Kingdom Konsulants and LOVE it!

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?
Since we are only there for 6 days, we only go to Disney World. We are hoping one day when we can stay longer to go to Universal. DH has never been there.

9) Do you rent a car?
No - we always use DME and their transportation on property.

10) What park do you attend first?
We always fly in on a Sunday morning. Right after checking in to the resort we head straight over to Epcot - first stop, Rose & Crown pub for some Fish and Chips! A great tradition we love!

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money?

We are fortunate enough to just have the money.

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value?

We try to stay someplace we've not stayed before and prefer the Deluxe resorts, but will stay where we can get the best deal for the time we're going to be there.

3) Do you fly or drive?

Fly - I can have breakfast at home and lunch in the park!

4) How long do you go?

The last three trips have been short ones - about 4 days. The last time we stayed for longer, it was 8 days.

5) How far in advance do you plan?

6 to 9 months.

6) Dining Plan?

No. Everytime I price it out (and I keep a tally of our food expenses for comparison), it's not cost effective for us. We just don't eat enough to make it work for us.

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?

Directly through Disney.

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc?

Now that WWoHP is open, we have spent a day there on the last two trips. But only IoA and the majority of the day is spent in WWoHP. And we skip the beach.

9) Do you rent a car?

It depends. I have used ME twice and for a short trip, it is perfect. If we're going to be there longer I want a car for more flexibility (like getting to Winter Summerland Mini Golf!)

10) What park do you attend first?

MK is always first and last.

When you decide it's time to go to Disney, what is your process?

1) Do you start saving for it? Or do you just have the money? - It is not as if I have a Disney fund. I plan one large vacation per year. Most of the time it is WDW or a DCL cruise. There are other trips to WDW during the year, but they are not 'large' ones

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Cheapest? Nicest? Newest? Best Value? DVC means I don't worry about the cost. We will try various locations depending on what we plan on doing

3) Do you fly or drive? Fly - Continental if possible (well now it's United)

4) How long do you go? For the 'big' trip 7 to 10 days. If I am down there for something like Food and Wine or the Marathon, its 3 or 4 days

5) How far in advance do you plan? The big trip, months in advance. Smaller ones can be on two weeks notice if amazing airfare pops up. If it is just me going, and using DVC, and with my AP, the only thing out of pocket is airfare. If I can get cheap airfare, why not go for a weekend.

6) Dining Plan?TIW

7) Book through Disney or other (Travelocity, Expedia, etc)?Room via DVC Airfare online

8) Do you only go to Disney World or do you go to Universal, the beach, etc? If not cruising, we stay at WDW

9) Do you rent a car? not normally

10) What park do you attend first?no set park

2) Do you think about where you want to stay? Or is it just wherever you can get? Depends on what the deals are. We have stayed at all 4 values, 2 moderates and 3 deluxe. Last July at Yacht Club...this June at Movies on an extended family trip...we would rather be at the same resort.
