How can you afford it?!!!

I just looked over the individual prices on the website and now I am in shock. How can anyone, especially people with children, afford to go? I was looking at the Beach Club for next year because I have been wanting to stay at this resort but there is no way I will pay that much a night. That's just crazy! Sorry Disney, but unless you can lure me in with a great PIN code or some other offer there will be a few less guests at Disney World this year.

Good conversation and some good tips! It really does feel like the prices have gotten out of control these last few years (and continuing).
How we afford it: We'll be vacationing with my parents for our next trip and my dad is retired military. We are staying at Shades of Green and (hopefully) getting the armed forces salute 4 day ticket deal. If you are able to stay at SoG, I highly recommend it! Great rates for a solid resort across the street from the Poly.

We are going the week before our youngest turns 3, so no ticket for her and saving on food a bit.
However, I will definitely need to get creative with saving when we go without my parents!

I stayed at the Dolphin and had a fantastic room with a view looking out at Illuminations. It was fantastic. Same boat service to DHS and a bit longer walking path to Epcot World Showcase. Go off-season, M-F, and if you have loose morals, tell them it's your Honeymoon!

Wonderful advice!!! I couldn't agree more with you! The Swan & Dolphin is where it's at! Check out their prices!

1- We get our flights through southwest. (If you get the credit card it's a real deal. $100 annual fee, but you get 50,000 points if you spend $2k in 3 months.) For us a round trip flight is approximately 14,000 points. We book our flights and then watch the prices. If they drop we rebook (since it's free with southwest and the points go back into your account)
2 - we stay a a 4 bedroom house right off of property

I'm interested in hearing more about the points with Southwest. I just got an offer from them but it said $3000 in 2 months!! I thought that was a little steep.

A special discount mailed to you by Disney, a unique code number for you alone. There is no way to "sign up" for a pin code; Disney has a random system. Make sure Disney has both your email and home addresses.
We used pin codes in past years and were able to save a lot. We haven't received one for a long time and didn't think they were still around.

I didn't start receiving them until after we took the cruise. I'm guessing their system breaks down $$$ spent per family and income estimations to determine profit per room discount...or some nonsense like that.

Okay - original poster here - wow, lots of good advice and tips. I try to go once a year. I do save and save throughout the year to be able to go but it just seems to be so expensive now. I know Disney is well worth it. I love staying at WL but with the construction there is no way. I wanted to try some place new. I'm sorry but I will not stay at a value (been there, done that, no thanks) and I do not intend to stay off properly. No offense meant to people who do. It is just way too convenient to be there. I really enjoy spending time at the resort and only go to the park itself maybe twice; hence, the comment about the cost. Oh, and yes, I have stayed at a moderate. I was just looking for some place new to try and when I looked at the prices for next year I was in shock. I really like going in the Spring, maybe April or May. I guess I will just have to hope for a PIN code.

We rented DVC points when we stayed at AKL a couple years ago - saved about $1000 vs booking directly through Disney. Own DVC now and hoping for a stay at Beach Club in the Spring.

The ones I have gotten have all be $2000 in 3 months. Make sure not to do the one that gives you 25,000 points. Hold out and the 50,000 point offer will show up. I can email you next time I see it if you want.

I would agree that prices are getting a bit out of hand for WDW compared to the pasted but I also try to keep in mind that operating costs, employer costs, that WDW has to pay have also increased significantly. So what to do.... well, for our family it is a matter of where do we want to spend our vacation/entertainment dollars. We eat out rarely during the year, maybe once every other month, if that. We do not go out and party, and rarely do we go to the movies or concerts. We drive to WDW, which is much easier now that we live in GA. However, even when we lived in Western NY it was much more economical for us to drive to WDW than to fly. We also figured out that from where we lived in Western NY to go by plane was taking us over 8 hours in travel without any delays(home to airport 2 hours, 2 hours ahead of flight for securtiy, 2.5 - 3 hour flight, 1.5 hours from airport to WDW). We took that same travel time and found ourselves well into VA. It would cost us over $1,000.00 to fly the 3 of us and we could drive there and back for half that. Now that we live in GA it is a no-brainer for us to drive.
We also were able to take food and snacks with us when we drove. We would take all of our favorite breakfast foods and disposable bowls and have breakfast in our room. This alone would save us 30-40 dollars per day. Booking during times of discounts is also a wonderful way to save. We now own a travel trailer and we take that to stay at FWC and eat the majority of our meals at the RV. Yes, we still pay for the food but it is not nearly as expensive as dining out at the restaurants. Although WDW can be pricey with its camp site pricing compared to other campgrounds it is a wonderful place to stay and still a savings of 40 -50 per night over a value room depending on the time of year.
I guess when you look at vacationing and compare to other vacation destinations you have to look at how the dollars are spent and enjoyment that you get. Yes, I have been told that "you could go to the beach for vacation at lot cheaper" ; maybe that is true, but we don't want to go to the beach for our vacation, that is not what we are into.

We got our Southwest card last winter - ours was also $2000 in 3 months - we booked our flights to California on it, as well as paying cable and some other bills with it and easily hit that mark ( a little TOO easily ) That got us our 50,000 points so our airfare for our April 2016 trip is already taken care of

I go solo during the end of January which lands around the value part of the season..Just because you can't stay in something expensive you can always go value and save big..I usually wait and purchase the first nights stay and then pay it off throughout the year before I arrive..It saves me the stress and makes me feel much happier knowing I'm coming back to a place that I enjoy..

Guess DH and I are just naturally thrifty people and this carries over with our WDW trips. We sometimes use our Delta miles for free airfare (from HI) or combine it with a trip to the east coast to see family. If not, DH watches the ticket prices for months and buys when they hit bottom. (I swear it's become a hobby and he gets great pleasure from this!)

For hotels, we do not stay at deluxe resorts, but take advantage of Shades of Green since DH is military. We go in the off season and sometimes get the breakfast/room package. (We do visit the deluxe resorts and enjoy their atmosphere and restaurants, such as AK's animal park, Sanaa or the GF Cafe) If not, we take instant oatmeal or other quick breakfast snacks and plan for an early lunch, which cuts out breakfast expenses. We don't rent a car, but use the park transportation system. For us, the hotel is a room and we want to spend as much time out of it as possible. If we were to pop for a deluxe resort, I would want to enjoy the resort, not just use it as a place to sleep. You can just sleep cheaply anywhere.

In the park,we carry small water bottles that we refill at water fountains- never noticed any different taste to the local water. We also bring a few granola bars, etc for a quick snack during the day. We do ADR restaurants only once a day, and not every day. If we aren't starving, we will often split a plate, such as the ribs and chicken at AK's Flame Tree. After many $$$ meals where the food was just so-so, an ADR has to be a theme or event we will enjoy, such as SciFi or Germany's buffet, and never just a chow stop or place to eat. We generally choose moderately priced dishes, too, not the most expensive items. And, we rarely buy snacks- maybe an ice cream sandwich we share when the park closes (and that's not every time). To be honest, we enjoy the food at many counter services (like MK Harbor House and Morocco's Tangerine Cafe) more than some of the sit down places.

As for souvenirs, etc, we don't buy much for ourselves. I get a new Villains cup if I really like it and every couple of years DH gets a new hat. We do not collect vinylmation, Christmas decorations, etc, but I did pick up a set of Mickey measuring cups and spoons and a Mickey Halloween jackolantern over the years.

Bottom line is to simply make sure what you spend your money on is something that you really want/need/enjoy and is not just frivolous. Nothing wrong with deluxe resorts, snacks, and souvenirs, but make sure it works for what you want out of your vacation and memories.

1. Fly on points (Southwest)
2. Stay at a Value resort.
3. Buy 10 day no expire tix (yeah I know that's gone away).
4. Eat one sit-down meal a day, counter service for the rest. Don't go overboard.
5. Use Magical Express, no need for rental car.
6. Enjoy your trip!

It is crazy to me, too, but then again, you're talking about rack rate for a deluxe resort. Run the same numbers for a value or an off-site accommodation (especially during lower pricing seasons), or even for renting DVC points to stay at the Beach Club, and you'll be surprised how much more affordable it can be. I understand your sticker shock, though: rack rate for a week at a deluxe resort for my family of four would cost us half a year's-worth of mortgage payments. That's just not something we would ever do.

Also check for codes on Orbitz, as long as you aren't using the dining plan. And join the little Orbitz club thingy for an additional $25 off.
