Housekeeper gratuity

I read an earlier post about leaving a $3 to $5 gratuity each day for the housekeepers. Does the sound about right to everyone? I just wouldn't want to offend them by leaving too small of an amount.

$1.00 per person in each room is standard. For example, if you have 2 people in your room, then $2.00 is just fine. The housekeeps at WDW don't really make a good wage so tips do help them. Just be sure to leave your tip every day. Don't wait until the end of the week and leave $14.00. The staff oftens changes from day to day. Daily tips to the housekeepers is the best route.

WE plan to leave $2 a day.
Im afraid I come from UK and i very rarely tip anyone so a while back some one was talking about mousekeeping envelopes.

My children and I have been decorating small envelopes and will put the tip in them .
It was a lot of fun

They do such a great job, I always try to leave $5 per day (for my son and I), but I would think $2 would be the threshold to avoid offending.

I think how much you leave sometimes depnds on how long you stay, how many of there are and how good the service is.
For our family there are five of us and we usually stay three weeks, thats $105 quite a large amount of money.

When we stayed in the Dxie Landings we left $5 per day and gave the maid $40 the day we checked out, Out of the 21 days we stayed she had attended to our roon 18times, and went the extra mile, making towel figures rearranging the kids toys etc.

Yet when we stayed in te Contemporary the service was poor, I always straighten the beds before leaving, some days they where left like that. So here we left $3 per day and didn't feel bad about it.

$2 - $3 per day is fine. As far as the Contemporary housekeeping, it was good all the times we went (3). The only problem I encountered is one time with room service. We had ordered quite a few times during the 3 times we stayed and only one time the guy just dumped it and ran (no tip for him - even though it is included in the bill).

Have a great trip.

I've always had a problem with that! The room service prices are usually higher than going to the restaurant, a service charge of 1.50 - 2.00 is added, then the gratuity is automatically added. Am I also expected to tip? If someone sets everything up, makes sure the order is OK, and takes away the unneeded items right then, I add an extra tip...otherwise, I feel it's been covered. What do others do?

And I tip $2/person/night for average housekeeping service, more if it's exceptional.

2-3 bucks sounds about right.....5..wellll...thats a bit high ...That is just my opinion....and I am a good tipper to..dont get me wrong....but a fiver just for house keeping seems a bit much...unless they somehow go above and beyond. ..:)

Wow, I guess I live under a rock. I have never tipped the maids before, didn't even know I should. Where do you leave the money exactly, and why would it be based on how many people are in the room, a four person room is still just that regardless of how many stay there.

The assumption is that the extra people are leaving more dirty towels, using the second bed (if there is one), throwing more trash in the basket, etc.

I have always left the tip on a pillow...in plain sight. Sometimes people will put it in an envelope marked "housekeeping." The important thing is that it has to look as if it was placed somewhere for the maid on purpose...not just accidently left behind. Of course, most really high-end hotels include gratuities in the charge...that makes sure that everyone, from the bellman, to the maid, to the waiters, etc all get a share. Then you only add a tip for exceptional service.

Phew I thought I was the only cheap-@ss. I've never left a tip. I've never heard of the practice except on cruise ships. But then, I've never stayed at a deluxe resort, and i've never had a towel doll made either.

I thought it was their job to pick up your towels, and make the beds. NOW it's a fight just to get clean towels. I keep a very tidy hotel room, I think they should refund me for not living like a slob.

We've always left the tip in the little dish where they keep the extra soap and shampoos and stuff. They always find it and restock the stuff we used or already packed away :lookaroun A lot of times it's gets us some extra "free" souveniers for home.

Well dont worry about being cheap! We didnt leave our tip per person...we had two rooms, 8 people..5 kids...$16 a day for 10 days would have been a bit much for my budget! But we too are very tidy hotel guests...guess that comes from one of being a real "Type A" personality! We stay at the All Stars when we go...always have clean rooms, this last trip due to frequent pool trips we were always calling for extra towels...leaving the towels in the bins by the pool!
Just curious...does housekeeping pay vary from resort to resort?

It must be something about living in the Carolinas!

I have never, ever, EVER left a tip at any of my many hotel stays. Like you said, I knew this practice was expected on cruise ships and, of course, we did it there, but no one ever said anything about it at WDW the many times we have went and stayed on property. I've never paid my bill at the hotel with a credit card and there be a special line for "TIP" like there is at a restaraunt. It's never come up. Then again I never order room service or anything of the kind.

I personally hate the whole "tip" system. If it's something you're obligated to do, then include it with the price of the room/meal. If it's something you do in order to "reward" someone for excellent service, then why do people get mad when you don't tip someone for "average" or "below par" service. I've heard so many people talk about how waiters/waitresses don't make any money and depend on tips, etc. The restaurant should raise prices and pay them more. If they won't, the servers should either provide better service or look for another job.

One thing to realize is that the amount that is added in is a "service charge" even if it is 15% (most hotels are up around 18% to 20% now) the server usually actually only gets about 8%. The rest goes to the bottom line. (I can't speak for Disney on this, just about the hotels I've worked for, but it's fairly universal in the biz)

I've always read $1 per guest per day.

We generally have 4 guests and leave $5 per day in an envelope marked housekeeping. We do get some extras. And I guess...I wouldn't want there job. I appreciate them.

I think $3 was more than generous if they didn't even make the bed!

When we stayed at the WL the maids used to leave envelopes with their names on next to the sink.... sorry I forgot to translate it to US speak.... next to the wash basin.

The thing that always confused me is if your not happy with the service they gave you one day, so you don't leave a tip (or reduced tip) as the maids seems to constantly change at WL you just annoyed a different maid with that days tip! To me the tip was not to cover the service provided but to ensure that days maid did a good job.... over in the UK that called extortion! You can get arrested for that. BUT I didn't have any complaints about the service at WL and we left $2 a day for the two of us every day.
