Housekeeper gratuity

I read an earlier post about leaving a $3 to $5 gratuity each day for the housekeepers. Does the sound about right to everyone? I just wouldn't want to offend them by leaving too small of an amount.

When we stayed at the WL the maids used to leave envelopes with their names on next to the sink.... sorry I forgot to translate it to US speak.... next to the wash basin.

LOL! We say sink. I've never actually heard anyone say wash basin.

a tip should depend on the service ...i also think the size of the tip should also have some relation to the type of place you are staying at ...tipping at all stars as opposed to say the grand floridean

housekeepers get paid to do their job and then they get tips.
I have seen how fast they CAN fixup a room now imagine how many rooms they do a day ... then if everyone even gave them 1 dollar a day how much would they bring home... it isn't gonna have them driving rolls royces but it is decent pay .
so if they do something special or something sure pay more but
i don't feel guilty about not giving 10$ a day for the tow of us at an all stars that only cost me 55$ a night.

i did give more than 1 dollar a day ... gwen was nice :)

Well, after all our conversations, I believe I will continue not to tip. What is the need, that should be part of the price of the hotel, and likewise, the level of hotel, the cost per night goes up, therfore service should as well. Bellhops and exceptional service are one thing, but just to tip for cleaning up, not I said the spider.

Thanks for the corrections. Sink just sounded too English... I though nar they'd give it some other name just to confuse us Brits when we visit! Chips/Fries, packs, Pants etc! They all mean totally different things in the UK! It takes me two weeks just to get used to speaking Floridian then I go home and confuse every one!

We tip $2-$3 a day for the two of us. We leave it in an envelope marked Mousekeeping. We also sometimes left small gifts we'd bought especially from England. English soap, fine chocolate, that kind of stuff. We got lots of toy arrangements and tons of Mickey soap in return. :sohappy:

Wow Spidey you are way too harsh. As a former waitress, I can tell you that I was paid next to nothing and depended on tips. Housekeeping pays at the very least minimum wage. No matter where I stayed - whether at Disney or a small motel on Cape Code, I made sure housekeeping knew that I appreciated their efforts. The housekeeping staff that we always got went the extra mile with setting up my son's daily toy purchases on the bed. Extra towels and soap, even if it was not needed (THEY MUST HAVE ESP) and making sure everything was "neat and tidy" before we got back to the room to change for the evening.

But do as you feel comfortable with.

Again, I expect that in the price of the hotel. Much more like I expect a chef to prepare my food in a restaurant for the price it's listed. The Waitress is more like a valet or a Bellhop in my opinion, someone who gives extra outside care from what you are paying for... With Room costs you should epect to have towels replaced, soap replenished, and beds kept clean. Just my opinion, but my views on the subject are different. Sorry to disappoint, but don't worry... I tip everywhere else and good if worthy, just not for room care that I feel should be epected, unless they go out of their way.

No problem. I tip at the end of the trip. If the service is poor or standard 4 out of 5 days then you're right, don't tip. I was just saying that everytime we have gone the staff went really out of the way. No just with extra soap and stuff or cleaning - but doing things I didn't expect. They have even put our clothes hanging on the chairs away. And you know going with kids the room can look like a disaster area. We'll be staying at the BC 11/24-11/29 for Thanksgiving. I'll report back how everything went. :sohappy:

A pedant writes.....

The term 'wash hand basin' is used in construction just so people don't get confused with 'cleaners' sinks' or 'kitchen sinks'.

Aye thank yew!:p

I know why I was confused about the Sink. I found a web site describing the Dolphin Hotel and it says twin wash basins. I just presumed it was an American thing!

Go to go now, of to Florida for two weeks! Bye
