Horizons....

How do you know how many people are in the "Horizons camp"?

I don't know how many people are in Horizons camp. However, if you look at your average Disney World guest:

1. Most of them have not heard of Horizons
2. Most do not make annual or semi annual trips
3. Most have not been to EPCOT when Horizons was there, if they were at Epcot when Horizons was there, they most likely do not remember. This shows up in this thread. Someone mentioned that they were there in for a honeymoon and don't remember Horizons

This would lead to believe that Horizons camp is a very small percentage of all Disney guests.

Even if the "members" are unusually vocal (and what's the basis for that statement?),

The basis for that statement is simple. Look at WDWMAGIC or any Disney message board. Compare the amount of Horizons threads to the threads about other closed attractions such as:

1. CommuniCore
2. The Living Seas
3. Wonders of Life
4. Millennium Village
5. El Rio del Tiempo
6. Penny Arcarde
7. Skyway
8. Keel Boats
9. Canoes
10. Backlot walking tour or whatever it was called... the one with the Honey I shrunk the Kids bumble bee (I rode the bumble bee when I was 6 :king:)
11. Discovery Island
12. Alien Encounter
13. If you Had Wings/Dreamflight
14. Mr Toad's
15. Time Keeper
16. World of Motion

When you find a thread about these defunct attractions, look at the level of emotions that arise. Horizons threads have a high level of emotions due to the Horizons camp being extremely vocal. Many users of the forums only show up in Horizons threads. It's like they care only about Horizons.

It intrigues me. Part of Epcot was the future. The future is all about change and evolution. If one doesn't understand the fluid nature of Disney World and the need for change and evolution...... than one fails to grasp many aspects of old Future World and Horizons.

The list goes on and on

Isn't Epcot about moving forward? The only time they took a step back was with EO (that's another debate). We all need to move on. Truth is Horizons is not coming back neither is the living seas or whatever else we miss. We have Martin's videos to keep us entertained with the past. But Epcot is about moving forward and that's what we all need to do.

If by moving forward means walking through crap then you go first.

After reading some threads about improvements WDW needs to make I've seen a few people mention Horizons. I have no idea what that is. Please help a poor soul who has no idea what that was!

It was an attraction at Epcot that people remember as better than it actually was. It has a cult following unlike any other as far as extinct attractions go, but that has more to do with the "bandwagon" mentality and less to do with the quality of the attraction itself.

Opinion. I rode Horizons plenty of times during its last few years, and its still in my Opinion one of the best Disney Attractions ever created. No one says you had to like it or not, but don't start saying its fact that people over blow it. Horizons was an epic E ticket attraction and was 10 times better than Mission: SPACE, Test Track, and Soarin could ever be.

You were stating it as a fact.

I don't recall prefacing it with the statement, "this is a fact and not my opinion". How exactly did I "state it as fact"? Wouldn't that be in how it was interpreted, rather than how it was stated? It was an evaluative statement not accompanied by sources, etc. How would anyone reasonably interpret that I was trying to pass it off as a fact?

Oh I see you edited this post AFTER I already replied to it. Seems rather sneaky, but okay.

In any event, Horizons wasn't a terrible attraction and if you read my post (instead of trying to read something between the lines that isn't there), I never said I didn't like it. But it was an attraction that would be an embarassment if it were still around today. It was the type of attraction that if it were around today people would be saying "I wish they'd replace it with something cool, like a simulated trip to Mars or something". It would be a walk on attraction and I doubt many (if any) Disney fans on this site would consider it their favorite, or even one of their favorites.

You're acting as if Horizons was around today that it wouldn't have had a major refurb... Which it was going to get, but you're acting like it would be the same attraction from the early 80's, when it wouldnt be. That's a bit disingenuous

The people who dislike Horizons and love M:S spend wayyyy more time thinking and caring about it than anyone else. Once you start making charts and quoting figures and lecturing people... It's gone way past being redonkulous.

If Horizons were around today it would be hardly comparable to the 1983 version. It would be the Haunted Mansion of Futureworld (a comparisson to ride system, capcacity, style and popularity)

The early 90`s proposed refurb would have seen to that, and an educated guess says it would have had another similar overhaul in the past decade.

Sounds great on paper but it is all predicated on Disney doing fairly extensive refurbs ever 8-10 years which to my knowledge is something they have never done in WDW. Now if they would do this Horizons would still be here. Call it short sightedness, pi$$ poor management, whatever but it seems to be the reality of the way things work in WDW. TDO wants attractions that they build once and do nothing but maintenance and minor pluses from day one until the end of time. A attraction like Horizons will never be that kind of attraction.

In its absence, what is now the Haunted Mansion of Future World? Spaceship Earth? As much as I loved Horizons (a long dark ride worthy of a lengthy wait) and prefer it over M:S, I don't see any other contenders for this title and SSE's refurbishment history is somewhat clouded by the incomplete nature of its last overhaul. While I agree Horizons would have been updated somewhat from what it was, wouldn't that have been completely dependent on what the sponsor was willing to invest (unlike Haunted Mansion)? Given the history of other sponsored pavilions, how can we assume Horizons would have received satisfactory updates?

WOAH! im gone for less than a day and this thread takes off.

i think what it comes down to is a generational thing. most of Disneys new consumer are looking for thrills, and thats what theyre getting, which is why M:S is staying and Horizons is gone.

i think some people here like the IDEA of Horizons more than they actually liked Horizons. kind of like me and Jimmy Buffett. i understand his whole advancement in the island/country/rock genre, but hes not doin anything for me.

so i guess in a sense, Horizons is kind of like Jimmy Buffett...
