Horizons 94 question?

SO I believe Horizons was to receive a complete overhaul in 1994 that could have saved it but Eisner said no.

1. What was this over haul to include?
2. If it was to happen would it have included a new script, narration, and score like a SSE refurb. If so do you think there would be as much debate here like the new version of SSE?
3. IYO would it have been half arsed and let unfinished like SSE?
4. IYO if this overhaul happened would we still have Horizons today?

Wasn't '94 around the time when GE pulled out and all mentions of it removed as well as a couple effects? Wikipedia does mention the following, though without citation:

"During the early 90s, after GE had dropped sponsorship, some ideas were tossed around about the pavilion being turned into a space-themed pavilion. The building would have been upgraded and rethemed. The ride system would be changed drastically, in which the guest would be in an individual space harness while viewing space stations and space in general and would control the pitch and yaw of the vehicle."

Sounds a bit like what ultimately came of the area, just in the original building.

I am not sure when GE pulled out but Horizons was to receive a major overhaul in 1994 which Eisner canned!

Horizons was my favorite ride ever in Disney, but Eisner was right to pull the plug. No matter what the refurb was, he wasn't living up to the original, and the chances of doing an update without major alterations of the ride were slim.

M:S fails in some of its edutainment aspects, but is a solid and cutting-edge ride. I'd love to see some more stuff in the post show rather than a giant video game, but other than that it is an interesting look into realistic spaceflight.

Horizons hanging around too much longer might have tarnished the memory we have of it. Kind of like SSE may be hanging around too long though too many iterations, although it is also one of my all-time favorites.

Also, try Martin's Horizons/M:S video. It has some great concept art and an explanation of the thought process.

Excuse me, but that is by no means a foregone conclusion. Without any information on exactly what the 1994 Horizons rehab would have entailed, there's no way we can definitively proclaim that it would have made the ride better or worse. In fact, if the 1994 Spaceship Earth rehab is any indication, a mid-90s Horizons rehab might have resulted in everyone's favorite incarnation of the attraction.

Of course, it's equally possible that it would have been chock-full of clumsy attempts to anticipate the future of the then-infant Internet, and today we would be holding it up as proof that the Nineties Were Stupid. But we'll never know, and that's my point.

What???

I disagree completely with both those statements. SSE one most of all. You might as well say Peter Pan, Space Mountain and Pirates should be replaced because they've hung around too long.

And there were plans of making an updated Horizons at Westcot and at Disneyland Paris' Discoveryland as part of Space Mountain Mission 2. So updating it was definitely a possibility at one time, which could have made it totally relevant today. I just wish I knew what those plans were.

Great video, though long. Had to FF through the attraction ride through... I thought they also reduced the G-Force of orange, but maybe I'm crazy.

Anyway, thanks for the video link. I suppose it's close to time to debate if HP will renew...

Again??

1994 refurb would have been great. Plussing everything of the original without messing it up. See SSE 2007 but with a full finale.

Space pavilion overlay would have used some of the ride system for one part of its attraction. Would have been better going with JIS v1 or the `78 version.

HP offered to pay for demo and new pavilion. Disney rubbed hands with glee.

No sinkhole.

This really makes me want to stick pins into a Michael Eisner doll.

There are concept pictures of the Horizon's into the "new" Space pavilion posted in the M:S breakroom. These are of the Horizons building retro fitted for the new theme. Sorry, no pics.

Here's some concept art for the proposed shoe-horning of JIS into the Horizons showbuilding.

I die a little bit inside everytime I hear about this.

I wish they'd just turn WOL into a Horizons pavillion. I think a theme like what was planned for DLP would be killer for EPCOT.
