Really? do you tend to like song with stupid phrases like "Let's raise the roof..."? It's not funny or cute, its just lame...

I never said that I liked it, however it is no more stupid than, "Whistle stomp and yell We're gonna stay a spell cause we're hoop dee doin' in tonight."

I don't think anyone is saying the original was a Stephen Sondheim song, but yes, I think it's much more clever than this current version, which tries very hard to be "cool." There's nothing cool about the show- it's corny, old-fashioned, and silly. And that's exactly what's made it popular the past 37 odd years.

I think for a show that has run every night since 1974 and is a Disney heritage show - it should be left alone. Many of us have seen that show since we were kids. It is a since of tradition for the resort - and has spanned generations. I don't think its smart to mess with a formula like that. I probably would feel better about this if I actually thought Disney actually did anything to try and keep the show true to form - but I think like so many other things we have witnessed as of late- they seem to be tossing tradition out the window, and assuming most guests are too dense to notice. And the ones who do notice - well, who cares... I suppose this is just another example of that sort of mentality with resort management.

To directly quote Walt:

"EPCOT will be an experimental prototype community of tomorrow that will take its cue from the new ideas and new technologies that are now emerging from the creative centers of American industry. It will be a community of tomorrow that will never be completed, but will always be introducing and testing and demonstrating new materials and systems. And EPCOT will always be a showcase to the world for the ingenuity and imagination of American free enterprise."

Now as to my opinion. Seeing the Walt Disney World Resort today, I have come to believe that the entire resort really is EPCOT. Look at it. The whole property resembles a city. You have power, lodging, a planned community of Celebration, transportation, entertainment, shopping, fire departments, roads, bridges, communications and that is only what I can think of right this second. Walt states that Epcot will never be completed. and that is very true. WDW as a whole will never be completed. Things will change.

True but classics should remain classics. I doubt Walt Disney would have said that the great plays of Broadway should change thier musical numbers. They simply change the whole show or leave it as is. HDDR should have stayed the same or should have been replaced. Not changed. Any change, no matter how small it is will be seen as a grave violation of nostalgia. I myself was flipped out when I heard that the Imagineers lost their minds and decided to put Disney characters in IaSW.

Yes, let's change the iconic opening prologue of West Side Story, because, gang members don't dance ballet, right?

Or, let's rewrite the opening number of Oklahoma, because corn doesn't really grow as high as an elephant's eye, and those lyrics are "corny."

How about starting Fiddler on the Roof with a revised version of Tradition, to express modern sentiments?

To use a more modern example, maybe act 1 of Wicked should end with a song other than Defying Gravity?

There are some things you just shouldn't touch because you got it right the first time.

This is very far out there. In fact, I don't see how a comparison can be made between press releases or presentations from Disney about futuristic city that never came to be - and the entertainment complex that WDW is today. However, I am very pleased that you took the time to stay for the movie for One Man's Dream..

Just saw the show on Saturday. The new song works, but it isn't nearly as good as the old opening. I made sure to note this to the manager, the box office, and the cast.

I plan to write a letter to Disney as well. Do I think it'll help, no, but at least they'll know someone is noticing.

Actually that is the attitude that the company took in designing and building EPCOT Center. They came to the conclusion that, rather than build a new city, the resort as a whole would now represent the ideals of EPCOT, with the new theme park representing its center, in concept as well as geography.

And in some ways (innovative technology, showcasing talent), I do believe that they have done that. Not perfectly, of course; and I have my arguments with the company's decisions, but they have done this to a degree.

I also think that, just as the MK is balanced between futurism and relishing memories of the past, the experience of an old-fashioned Western medicine-show style dinner show is perfectly appropriate for Fort Wilderness, and should be there, as authentic as possible. Any updating is OK, as long as it keeps with the theme. The new song is OK, from what I saw, but I think the old one worked better.

I wouldn't mind, though, having a whole new show -- same idea, perhaps different jokes and period songs. It is possible to make a new show in the very same vein...

You have a lot more faith in Disney's current creative entertainment department than I do. I think what has made Hoop Dee Doo such a timeless show was that someone didn't sit down and write it in the beginning. The show was tested over and over again on audiences by a group of young college kids on summer. The parts that work stayed in. The parts that tanked were scrapped. I think any kind of attempt to replacement would be extremely forced and way too "Disney-ified". I mean...I am assuming you have seen the Spirit of Aloha? That show has been in a constant state of screwed up ever since they tried to update it years ago. The original was amazing from what I understand. The subsequent versions have nothing short of embarrassing.

My fear is that a revision of the show would incorporate something ridiculous like the characters in "western" attire, completely defeating the purpose of the show.

And yes, exhibit A for why you shouldn't change these shows (when they were great to begin with) is Spirit of Aloha. The first show was wonderful, but these revisions, particularly when they combined the "kiddie" show with the adult one, have been horrendous.

Hopefully, cause, to be honest, I felt the original made the show, but I don't hate the new song... And who knows when I will go back LOL... I say chances are good that I won't be back to Hoop Dee Doo for a few years LOL...
