Hoop Dee Doo Revue Change Confirmation

I dont think anybody is saying it is wrong, however if you have to dumb something down to get more attendance, that should say something rather alarming about our society as a whole. It was meant to inform, educate, and entertain in a creative way, that was the same thought process for all of the pavilions in Future World, however that was thrown out with the bath water long ago, the education that was so cleverly disguised with the earlier verions of the pavilions have all but become extinct. Did I really think that 15 second hydrolator was taking me to the bottom of the ocean? When I was younger, yes, I did, and I was learning and being entertained at the same time without the assistance of a cartoon charachter to keep my attention. (Now practically every tank and exhibit has a Clown Fish and a Regal Blue Tang). As I grew older, yes I figured it out ... but it didn't stop me from enjoying it and enjoying the expresions of the little ones who were riding it for the first time. If you want to ruin any illusion you can find a reason too, most of us choose not too when we are trying to enjoy ourselves.

I had the same exact experience as a kid and agree completely with your comment. I get that it is important to sell tickets, but there are better more creative ways to do it. Thrill can be had at any park. Educating (without the rider knowing it) while thrill/entertaining is the pinnacle of a good theme park. All rides in Future World used to be that way. I think at this point SSE and The Land still do that to some extent. TT tries to do it but it spends more time thrilling. Not allot of education there either and I get much more thrill by riding a good tall roller coaster. Most everything in all the parks across Disney Parks are coming down to the same level as Universal Studios.

After reading all the posts on the thread, and I don't mean to stray off-topic, but when it comes to copyright infringement with the Hoop-De-Doo Polka, it sort of remind me of all the spur of the moment renditions of copyrighted songs sung by the Adventurers Club cast members - all the fun, nonsense songs like Lobster, Flounder, The Happy Wanderer, I'm Your Mailman, 18 Wheels on a Big Rig, Toast, and When The Saints Go Marching In, etc., to name a few.

If the Hoop De Doo Revue has been incorporating copyrighted music for years, why levy a lawsuit now, some 40 years later?

Still, the music at Hoop De Doo Revue and the Adventurers Club, copyrighted or not, and the interactivity of the cast with the resort guests, are they ingredient.

I'm considering seeing my first Hoop De Doo Revue in over 30 years in the next month. Shall I still go? Will I still be entertained?

It is my understanding that the original music publishing company that owned the Hoop Dee Doo Polka was fine with Disney's use of it. Apparently, however, it was sold a couple years ago, and the new company wanted Disney to pay not only ongoing licensing fees to use the song - but also back fees - for all performances since 1974. Sooo...apparently, instead of trying to strike a deal a hand over a little bit of money for a very profitable dinner show, they thought it better to change the music out. I am sure the company would have been eager to settle to have ongoing revenue for this 1950's polka...

Kinda having second thoughts about booking it again this year. On a side note, in the youtube video, boy was it empty in there (audience-wise).

That's because it wasn't an actual performance. That was a dress rehearsal for the show with the changes. That's why you saw so many managers sitting there taking notes.

Well, yeah, that's tough to see. But, it's the way things are going to be so gotta get used to it, or just not go again. For my part, the whole show, food, everything is just so dang fun that I'll keep going, even as I miss the original song. 98 percent of the show will be the same, anyway. So it goes . . . . .

I hate to be the one to tell you this but it's more than just the opening number. About 4 numbers have changed, including the chow down song.

We must remember that even though we grow attached to what we already know and enjoy, change is what keeps Disney going. If they were to keep everything as is with no changes, there wouldn't be anything new to enjoy and it could become just boring. Yes, the changes may disappoint us, but just cherish the memories of what used to be and enjoy the new.

Well said.

I watched the youtube video, and while I would love the original "Hoop" song, this seems like it'll be OK. There's a lot of the same "schtick", so I think we'll still enjoy ourselves in October.

On a side note, however, if there is still a lawsuit, even though Disney is no longer using the "Hoop" song, wouldn't they still owe back pay for the last 37 years?

Depends on many factors. The change may be a part of a settlement. They might not have made a change if they felt that they were in the right. Changing it could be used against them "If you were not wrong for the last 37 years, then why would you feel the need to change it now?".

BTW... the word "sad" get tossed around a little to easily. :brick:

Saw it last night, first time with the new changes. They switched out corny old songs no one has ever heard outside the show with new corny old songs no one has ever heard outside the show. Other than the main theme, the mainstays I still remember from my childhood--"They come from...", "Clementine", "Strawberry Shortcake"--are all still there. In any case, it's definitely a show that depends on the actors' charisma far more than they song choice.

As with anything, I will try anything once, even though the last time I was the Hoop Dee Doo Revue was in 1979. Don't remember the show all that much except for the bbq chicken, silver-loking plates, buckets and silverware and picnic tablecloth. I might schedule a dinner for my upcoming October trip.

Not really. The song was neither better nor worse than the old one IMHO. It is kinda hard to label that a fail.

Really? do you tend to like song with stupid phrases like "Let's raise the roof..."? It's not funny or cute, its just lame...
