I believe Catastrophe Canyon is being worked on in this referbishment.

In other news, Studio Catering Company is also down for a month. As of the other day, all menus and signage are gone. All that remains of the name is the painted name on the metal above the order windows.

I'd like the studios to return to how it was back in its hayday.

There really was never a hayday.

While a handful of productions used the studios (namely the new MMC, that short-lived Alice show, and whatever that Hulk Hogan thing was) just about all you ever saw on the studio tour even back then was made-up.

For instance, they'd take you through the facades and you'd see "an exciting new music video!" being filmed. There would be crew looking all serious and using dolly's and cherry-pickers and they'd tell you to "watch for it on MTV!" but the truth is if you turned your head around as you passed it you'd see them resetting the whole thing for the next tram tour.

So yes, there were little things here and there that Disney was able to lure down to FL to film, but in truth it never really was a "working" studio to begin with, just a theme park that occasionally had some filming done in it.

What do people see who take similar back lot or studios tours in California at actual studios, like at Universal?
Is it reallly possible to see a whole lot of interesting stuff?

:)

With Studios? Are you kidding?

They don't need to be filming things there constantly, but they could do SOME stuff there. That was such a great aspect about the original park. Why not bring that back?

Because it was a contrivance to begin with. Even Universal knew better when they built the Florida property. You don't build sets on a backlot and hope a movie comes along that will need them, which just goes to prove how the only reason any production went on at D-MGM was to justify the park's existence. With the exception of the faux backlot tour, it does seem that the parks original attractions were more in line with what Universal Studios Hollywood offered: glimpses into movie-making. Disney should just scrap that all together and do what I suggested in a different thread, which is just build attractions that are themed to movie genres, since that is where they seemed to be headed.

Heading for the great escape.
I just wish theyd bite the bullet and make it more of a thrill park, keep the spirit of Epcot and MK, put the falsh bang wallop stuff in DHS.

^ I think that is what will tend to happen over the years ahead. I don't see it becoming only a thrill park though as even the thrill rides now are more for families.

Yes.
Examples of real studio tours:
At Uni Hollywood - Saw filming going on for the Grinch movie a few years ago, and got to see many well known filming locations around their back and front lots.
At Warners: Got to visit the sets of West Wing, Cold Case, Gilmore Girls and ER to name a few. (Watched them film a scene for ER.) Got to see many of the props from the Potter films. Saw construction for some large props for the second and third Pirates films. Got to look into the soundstage where filming of the Poseidon Adventure remake was taking place, and had lunch at the table next to the director of that film (Wolfgang Petersen).

That kind of stuff is...ummm....kinda rare at DHS.

Quite hard seeing as how they have no available soundstages. Or at least they won't pretty soon.

The Tour is in it's last few years of operation. Let's not be too hard on it as it fades into history.:D

Even in it's diminished version, it's still better than the one in DL Paris!

yes, the studio and filming always take first priority at USH. the trams are rerouted depending on what is filming that day and what location they are on. it isn't unusual for the tram to drive next to trailers, filming equipment, hot sets, tech people, and if you're lucky you might see a few celebrities walking around. they used to have a large board at the entrance of the park that would let you know what would be filming that day and on what set. At nearly 50mins in length, the studio tour is one of the best theme park experiences imo.

...and getting thrown in the trunk of a car, and driving away for a long time, and then getting on a plane...

and somewhere in all of that there are references to triangles, TDO being cheap and Willy Wonka.

^This. Maybe if productions came to Florida like Universal and Disney both banked on things would be different, but it just didn't work out they way both companies wanted.

Anyways, I'm ignoring this thread some more by crankin' up iTunes.

We went on it last week in hopes that it was our last time ever on the Backlot Tour. It might as well have been because it was horrible due to the weather. They weren't running the full Harbor Attack effects tank, and they didn't bring us through Catastrophe Canyon.

It has a large capacity, but the footprint it takes up could be used so much more effeciently in terms of guest capacity.

The park needs C/D ticket rides, and the level of space being occupied by the Backlot Tour is enormous.

When they eventually demo the Tour, I hope some absent minded demolitions expert accidentally sets charges all around LMA too. That footprint could be put to better use as well.
