This is a common mistake. To quote Walt Disney in reference to the look of the Haunted Mansion "[The Ghosts] take care of the inside and we take care of the outside". His and WED Imagineering's vision was for the mansion to look quaint and pristine on the outside. The Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood on the other hand is designed to look like a derelict and ever since that ride opened alot of people think that Haunted Mansion is also supposed to look rundown which is simply not the case.

True, and if you look at onl HM pictures you can see not only how clean the house looks but also the surrounding lawns are cut and organized with arranged floral shapes. The houses architecture was saposed to be the only giveaway about what the ride is like (that's why it was designed more sinister looking than the Disneyland original).

Does anyone know if the awnings were put in place to be temporary along with the Millenium celebration or a permanent structure?

Comparing the new canopy structure to photos of the old one, it appears that (unless they add more sections in the next few days) the new one is in the exact same place as the old one--- no bigger, smaller, taller, or shorter. About the only possible difference I see is that the new one might have a more peaked roof once the canopy is installed.
It seems to me that the new canopy is wider. When we were there last May, I recall there being about two feet between the canopy and the retaining wall on the river side. The new frame goes all the way (almost) up to that wall.

Looks to be that way. This is actually better if they are planning to put FP back in. If not, then it's extra space for more queue lines. Although I never really cared for the canopy at HM it does provide much needed shade when standing in that line.

Since they have been up for many years now they were definitely designed and designated to be a permanent structure from the beginning.

hmmm, can someone describe the Starboard Deck Sandwich to me? i have never had one and might try one on the 1st.

I found this from the menus on Allearsnet.com. The price is from 4/07:

Starboard Deck Sandwich - ham with tomatoes, broccoli slaw and cheese $6.89

I have never had one so I don't know how tasty it might be :)

So.... if what you're saying is true, then since the wand was up for many years, that means it was designated and designed to be a permanent structure as well? I don't think so.

That was pretty funny how they were cleaning the HM. The extior looks pretty much the same. I was just wondering thought how you were able to snap those shots. I think you were in the Colombia restaurant but I'm not sure.

That's an interesting photo. The scale of the mansion is really thrown out of whack with people standing up on that scaffolding.

I've never had the Starboard Deck Sandwich, but the tuna sandwich on whole grain bread is TO DIE FOR.

I get the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo all the time, with a regular Iced Tea. And I sit on the second floor, in the room that overlooks the pathway between Fantasyland and Liberty Square. :D Wish I was there eating now...

That area over the pathway is my favorite place to sit at the Magic Kingdom. Mostly because it's pretty secluded from all the traffic on the first floor.

The wand was indeed designed as a permanent structure, it was also designated to be up until at least 2009 and indefinitely after that. We can thank Siemens for it coming down sooner. It is nothing more than a myth that the wand was supposed to be removed immediately after the millenium.

Every time I've been in there, that section was closed :( . I've always wanted to go up there.

Please excuse my memory but I can't seem to recall the URL to order that EPCOT hat. If someone can post or PM me the URL, it would be greatly appreciated.
