My aunt lives in Jackson MS. My mom just got off the phone with her, she said a lot of the news channels are covering New Orleans right now, but that the Gov, came on and said he was afraid they were going to have a lot of deaths.

(Jackson, Miss.-AP) August 29, 2005 - Mississippi's governor says if his worst fears prove to be true, there could be a "a lot of dead people" in the area of his state hit by Hurricane Katrina.

Haley Barbour says the hurricane "came in on Mississippi like a ton of bricks."

Barbour refused to criticize those who ignored orders to evacuate, but he said police and National Guard troops can't be sent out on rescue missions in 135-mile-an-hour winds.

He says he wished that every person had fled to safer ground, and that he hopes those who didn't will be OK.

The storm brought a huge 22-foot storm surge to Mississippi. It also blew out the windows of a hospital, and left at least one casino partially flooded.

Sailboats were washed onto a four-lane coastal highway, and trees were blown across streets and onto houses. It's the most powerful storm to hit Mississippi since Hurricane Camille arrived as a Category-Five storm in 1969. Camille killed 143 people along the Gulf Coast.

STR8, I hope what you're saying isn't true and your place is untouched.

To the rest of you, I hope you're staying safe.

Woody, any damage in your area? I have a feeling your house is untouched, but what about the neighbors? I'm guessing there's at least some minor winds if you were clocking 85+ mph. You stay safe, and I want to say thank you for being a nice guy. Not many would be open arms like you, letting friends come stay.

(Gulfport, Miss.-AP) August 29, 2005 - There were increasing reports of damage across the coastal Mississippi today and well inland from Hurricane Katrina. Rising water was being driven across the beach and into residential areas.

Trees were blown across streets and onto houses from Pascagoula across Biloxi and Gulfport and westward to the Louisiana line.

Gulfport fire chief Pat Sullivan says the city has major street blockage. He says buildings have been damaged throughout the city and traffic signals are down.

Power outages were reported across the coast.

The Gulfport Memorial Hospital in Biloxi experienced major damage and broken windows early today.

Lea Stokes, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, says there were reports that Beau Rivage Hotel and Casino, one of the premiere gambling houses in Biloxi, had water on the first floor.

Broken utility poles, many with dangling power lines, were common as Katrine approached. Along highways, billboards were shredded while others routes were covered with debris.

Winds, which officials estimated had climbed to 135 to 145 miles an hour range midmorning today, forced water under the door at the Harrison County emergency operations center. Officials say they have to estimate wind speed because their measuring instruments had been blown away.

Katrina plowed into New Orleans with howling, 145-mile per hour winds and blinding rain that flooded some homes to the ceilings and ripped away part of the roof of the Superdome, where thousands of people had taken shelter.

Katrina weakened overnight to a Category Four storm and turned slightly eastward before hitting land about 6:10am east of Grand Isle near the bayou town of Buras.

At the Superdome, wind peeled pieces from the roof, leaving two holes that let water drip in. Scores of windows were blown out at some of New Orleans' hotels. At the Windsor Court Hotel, guests were told to go into the interior hallways with blankets and pillows and to keep the doors closed to the rooms to avoid flying glass. At 9am Central, Katrina was centered about 30 miles southeast of New Orleans. That put the western eye wall with some of the fiercest weather over New Orleans. The storms winds have dropped to 135 miles per hour, but it's threatening the Gulf Coast and the Tennessee Valley with as much as 15 inches of rain over the next couple of days.

To be honest, I haven't been able to survey the damage yet. I've just been able to look out the windows. I made a foolish attempt to go outside. I went out the front door and a large tree limb zoomed by in front of me. Had I been hit with that thing, it would have caused me some serious damage. So, i decided to play it safe and go back inside unitl the winds die down. Unfortunately, the winds are still dangerous. The power just went out again!

From what I can tell looking out the windows, it doesn't look too bad. Part of my fence got knocked down, AGAIN. However, whatever damage we get will be minor compared to our friends in LA, MS and AL. MKCP 1985 and Ringo8n24 have most likely sustained major damage based upon the locations of their homes.

Good to hear from many of you so far, in the affected areas. I am back from my trip, and I am glad to see that many of you are still posting.

But my heart and prayers go out to you who may have lost homes or had significant damage. Keep us posted, and heed the warnings about safe times to return.

Watching the news coverage I was thinking about them too. Woody, I had no idea you were in harms way! You take care and we await your return!

STR8FAN2005, my prayers go out to you and micbat as it looks like your hometown has been hit badly too.

Hang in there guys & hopefully we will see you all soon.

Well, I've got good news and bad news. I'll give you the good news first. Over here in Florida, we didn't have serious damage. At my place, we experienced tropical storm force winds for a period of about 21 hours from about 3 AM until midnight on 08/29/05. During that time as the bands of the hurricane moved over us, we would at times get gusts up to as much as 100 MPH along with periods of heavy (and horizontal) rain.

I thought that since hurricanes Ivan and Dennis had cleared out all of the weak trees, that we wouldn't have a problem with broken tree limbs. I was wrong. I couldn't get out of the house to survey the damage until this morning. Found lots of broken tree limbs in my yard. Most of them were from trees located in other yards! It took me the better part of the morning to clean up that mess. A part of my wooden privacy fence was blown down, but that is to be expected. None of the main posts snapped off, so it will be a simple matter to repair. I'm just too tired right now to work on that project.

The power to our house (I think our friends across the pond call it "the mains") became very intermittent yesterday. The power was sometimes on, sometimes off, while other neighborhoods had total power failures that have yet to be restored. Fortunately, I bought a small battery powered TV last year before Ivan and I have a separate line hooked up to my main outdoor TV antenna so that I can get a strong signal to the little TV. We were able to watch local news coverage of the storm.

As I had mentioned yesterday, we have some friends that evacuated the Mississippi Gulf Coast and they are staying with us for the duration. Well, two of the couples staying with us have children. I now have 6 children ranging in age from 6 to 11, boys and girls and I had to find a way to entertain these guys. They were so worried about this storm. Some of them were in tears. Last night, we got out some old board games (Monopoly, Clue, etc.) and that helped take their minds off the storm. Now that we have power back, I broke out the heavy duty stuff. I have multiple copies of all the Walt Disney animated DVD's ever released. I cut them loose with those! They are all mesmerized by these movies. They all are watching The Incredibles right now and Toy Story is next in their lineup. So, they are feeling better.

Now, for the bad news. We were watching some of the video coverage of the aftermath of Katrina on TV today from one of the local stations. They had some aerial shots of the MS Gulf coast. As we were watching, one of my friends broke down in tears. I asked him what was wrong and he replied, "Damn it Woody, that was a picture of what was my home. It's all gone, it's all gone, it's all gone...". It brought me to tears too to hear him say that and I couldn't think of anything to say that might help. So instead, I fought back the tears and I told him, "Hey I need some help outside cleaning up these tree limbs". We went outside and went to work. I didn't have any words or advice to help. The only thing I knew to do was to stay busy.

I've been in the "we need help" line for the past year. It's been tough to get supplies, competent contractors and even getting gasoline has been a pain. I haven't even completed one half of the repairs after Ivan that I still need to do. Well, today I'm stepping out of that line. There are so many more people that now desperately need help just to survive. That's what I am focusing on right now. I can't stand to see any more of the video images coming out of the devastated regions. The death toll keep mounting every hour and I am growing more and more depressed and angry. Hell, we can't even get over there to help! Where are The Incredibles when you need them!

Enough of my stupid rant! As you may know Ringo8n24 is associated with the Hard Rock Casino that was scheduled to open next week. The only thing left of that establishment is the guitar! Both he and MKCP 1985 decided to shelter in their homes located south of Interstate 10. I fear for them. I hope they survived.

Hi everyone. It's been about a month since I've been on due to school starting back and being that I'm a teacher, I felt I had to be prepared....LOL.... Now to the serious part. I got here hoping to see something from Ringo8n24 and MKCP1985. I am VERY worried about them. Our local news has reporters in Biloxi and the footage is just beyond words. I was in tears watching it. I am just over an hour away from Biloxi (in Alabama) and I used to live there. The devestation is just .....well..... hellish. I've NEVER seen anything like it. I used to live in Biloxi and my daughter was born there on Keesler AFB. It just ripped my heart out to see the footage. I was hoping to hear that Ringo and MKCP had evacuated, but I see that they didn't. I am very worried about them. They are taking people from NO, and the MS Gulf coast and bringing them to shelters in Mobile because there are none left there. We had very high winds (about 90-100 mph)here in Baldwin County and we are well over 100 miles from where the eye went over. I don't even want to imagine what Ringo and MKCP went through. We had massive flooding here as well, but NOTHING like Lousianna or Mississippi. I, again, am very lucky. We had no damage, Thank GOD! Power wasn't out long, either. My prayers are with everyone that is affected by Katrina.

Same here! I have a couple of friends who have totally lost their homes also. One in Biloxi and one in NO. It's so sad. :(

I too fear for Ringo and MKCP. I really hope that they decided to leave (despite what the posted).

I hope they left, too. I just can not imagine what they went through if they stayed. I remember how I felt when Ivan was passing over my house and Ivan was a whimp compared to Katrina. They had to have been terrified. I hope they get somewhere so that they are safe and can contact us.

My cousin lives in Metarie (just west of NO) and loaded up his zoo (4 dogs, a cat and a bird) and evacuated to Alexandria. He can not get back in yet to see if he still has a home. The news reported that most of Metarie is under water.

My husband's brother lives in Gautier (east of Biloxi, west of Pascagoula) and we have not heard from him yet. He is an EMT and was on call. It may be a long time before we hear from anyone in that area.
