Haunted Mansion

If I were Disney I would forget about Disney plus this year for Haunted Msnsion and make it PVOD only for Halloween… if they do that the August date makes sense… take advantage to get cash from summer and Halloween
Maybe they could expand the number of theaters it is in during October? Since so many October movies are being delayed due to the writer's strike, it might be worth a shot.

Hocus Pocus was released July 16th, and it went on to become a Disney Halloween classic.

This idea that a "Halloween" movie should only come out in September/October is silly, I mean I get it, but its silly. If that was the case we'd never have any horror or "fright" genre films releasing the other 10/11 months of the year.
And wasn't hocus pocus considered a box office flop (before becoming a cult classic for halloween)?

Honestly I think more importantly than date though was positioning it between some pretty major releases. Anyways, the reviews of it being fun but having flaws makes me think I'm going to enjoy this one. Hope to make it next weekend.

I really wish we got Guillermo del Toro's version.

I wanted to like it, but it wasn't funny (despite very clearly trying very, very hard to be so), it wasn't creepy, and it didn't even have moments where I thought "oh, cool".

It felt full of ideas and none of them were allowed the time they needed to breathe and develop.

And I can't believe we were right about Owen Wilson having a secret, and it's just... irrelevant. It's an excuse for lame pep talk jokes. We thought it would matter!

I will echo the compliments to the main actor, though; he did a great job.

I know nobody round here believes it…but D+ is gonna start to rupture subscribers…

They need more content. Today…tomorrow…in perpetuity…

So you can’t really tinker with it when you just need stuff

And I’m on such a streaming high after watching the finale of secret invasion that did absolutely nothing.

Well almost nobody went and saw it…so not sure why throwing it back out would change much?

What’s in it for the theaters?

I think everyone who saw it is on this thread. $30 mil is beyond pathetic…let alone for a Disney film with a known concept/name.

Lakeith Stanfield was easily the best part of the film and felt like it came from a different, much more prestigious and well made movie.

I think they should've chopped out all the comic relief characters (keep one if you must) and just kept him, the mom, and the kid.

Less crap taking up the time so they can actually develop stuff, plus it might force them to write jokes that flow naturally with the dialogue.

Supposedly the 150 million budget bandied about comes from Louisiana tax fillings and does not account for 30 million of rebates from New Orleans, which is why the tax fillings were made.

I don't know how much that helps, but 120 million puts it at an actual half decent budget in terms of Disney fodder.

Good point, I wonder what other rebates for recent Disney films should be taken into account regarding their budgets. As that may change the discussion in terms of their overall profitability or at least minimize the losses.

I read some article earlier today, I can't remember where, that said the producer of the Haunted Mansion movie was once a ride operator at DCA's Grizzly River Run about 20 years ago.

Of course, that same article claimed this Grizzly River Run ride operator would go ride the Haunted Mansion "on his lunch breaks", which makes no sense logistically and would probably get him into a lot of trouble. But then that is the current state of... journalism.

But still, kind of fun to think this movie was produced by a former ride operator many of us probably had tell us to "tug on our seatbelts" on that rotating turntable at Grizzly River Run twenty years ago.

It’s bizarre that Disney movies have spit the bit so hard this year…and two movies from other studios have destroyed/over achieved to a level that you’d think would put them on notice

…but no evidence that it has.

Anyone who tries to tell me this 2023 version is better than the Eddie Murphy version is INSTANTLY getting reported to the DHS as a threat to America and democracy in general!

Seriously, we watched it last night at the drive-in, and up until the last 15 minutes, I thought it was super corny, dialed in and they tried way too hard to be funny. I'm glad I only paid $25 for the carload of us instead of the $14x6 it would have cost at a regular theater.

On a side note, hello to everyone. I think it's been at least a year since I last posted. I know it's been long enough that I had to reset my password.

Welcome back Dray! Hopefully you and the family have been doing well. And as always you are wrong. This version was better than the Eddie Murphy one even though both weren’t as good as they should have been.

I feel a more accurate representation of a movie ranking would be for RT to take the two aggregated reviewer types and average them to determine a truer "Tomatometer" fresh or rotten % rating. RT gives too much stock in what critics think.

Yeah, we're doing ok. Father-in-law has been battling colon cancer for a bit over a year now but he's hanging in there. I switched jobs due to Cardinal Health selling the Cordis business to another company so I got a 5-month severance with a nice retention bonus to boot. Now I work for Nike. The sad thing is, I just got my raise and annual bonus from Nike and even though I've only been with them since November, those numbers were more than I ever got in 15 years with Cardinal. And in September they're doing the annual employee giveaway, so that's 35 pairs of shoes + other gear that we get for free. I just wish I had left Cardinal years ago for Nike.

But anyways, back to the fact that 2003 HM > 2023 HM...:D
