At the end of August last year we stayed in all-star music out in the boonies of the Country Inn, the farthest building. We had no problems with our room however the night before we left when we walked into our room there was a cockroach on the wall next to the door, I'm assuming it followed us in. It wasn't a big deal because we were able to easily push it out the door. But I hate all bugs, especially cockroaches.

I know they are common in the south so I am wondering if anyone else has had something like that happen and how you would handle it.

BTW 34 days for me! yayy:D (had to brighten up this post)

Your best bet is to ignore the possibility of their presence, and kill them if they appear. How? Hair spray, magazine, BB gun, whatever...
My mother has an intense phobia against spiders; black, brown, big, small, hairy or rubber. When we were kids and she would screech we knew to go get Dad to kill the monster. One time, she saw one of those big wolf spiders, and Dad did shoot it with the BBgun. He was so proud.:D

My brother was staying at my mother's once with his young family when one of the kids screamed that there was a spider on the wall. He grabbed the fly swatter to go after it, til he saw how big it was. He ended up killing it with a pan....

I have never seen bugs in the rooms at WDW with the exception of staying at Pop. We have always stayed in Deluxe resorts so there is no exterior door to the outside with the exception of the balcony doors. At the Pop, there were these cream, almost translucent little bugs over the floor. Maybe 20 of them! It was nasty!!! I tend to agree with you that cockroach (Palmetto Bug I am assuming) probably followed you in. The bugs in our room, I don't know if they came in from the outside, but after killing them, we didn't see any more so hopefully that was the case as well. I know the doors are left open when the rooms are being cleaned and they do have the exterior doors, so bugs can wander in. It is Florida after all. :)

I saw dead roaches on the street of epcot.
But speaking about roaches, during my last trip to Singapore, I was staying at my uncle's place. When I was asleep I could somewhat hear a nasty buzz and something landed on my cheek. Being born in south east asia where roaches are flourished, instinctively I knew what it was. All bugs are equally disgusting to me and I screamed like a little girl. I picked up my sandals and slammed it so hard repeatedly as if my future depended on it.

Oh yeah just incase you don't know, some of them do fly.

Uhm NOPE! but that doesn't mean I won't! It's Florida. Known for B52 sized palmetto bugs LOL - they are everywhere....and any pest control is not 100% effective and won't ever be! Same with love bugs...they are ever where in FL at certain times of the year. Just look at it as part of your Disney Experience LOL

A palmetto bug is a type of species of cockroach. A cockroach by any other name is a cockroach, and they are all over Disney. We stayed at the POR last month in Oak Manor, and there were dead ones on the stairways and on the walkways.
They come in to feed and get water. Once they find a source, they usually come back to that source like ants.
They are so hard to stop because they are prolific breeders. If you have still water i.e. the manmade waterways at Disney, and you have bushes and trees and hot weather, you will have them. You can spray till your arm falls off, but if they need water, they will come into your room. There is just so much Disney can control. That still doesn't make me feel good when there is one right outside my door. I guess that's better than right inside my door. We saw several in the streets at HS this trip.
I did a quick search online to verify that they are a type of cockroach (I knew people would say I didn't know what I was talking about.) and found that they are kind of cockroach and that there is a huge problem with them this year because of the extreme heat and dry weather. You can easily check for yourself.
We live in Georgia, so this is nothing new to us. The best you can do is spray around you doors and windows with repellant, as opposed to insecticide and hope for the best.
I've never had one come in the room that I saw, but I've seen many outside the room. So hopefully, whatever Disney is using is keeping them mostly outside.
We stayed off property, at a nice place, and they had silverfish in the room. When I reported it, they offered to come up and kill them. I told them that I'd already done that.LOL I just wanted to know what they were.
She also offered that they don't bite. Well. That's good to know, now give me another room please.

Also growing up in asia, we use this special chalk (I think -here- it's called a chinese chalk) to deal with roaches. It's better than the spray because it lasts days until you wipe them out. Simply draw lines across floors etc they won't cross these lines, but if they do they'll die. But of course the only disadvantage is if they are smart enough to fly.

That "chalk" is more than likely boric acid. It works pretty well but it is rather visible and it leaves no lasting effect once it is washed or swept away.

Indeed it is. And you're right once you wipe it off, it's gone and you have to draw again. But to me it's proven more effective than the spray in certain circumstances, especially at night so they couldn't sneak in through cracks, gaps etc.

Was it a big palmetto bug or a little brown at times flying roach? The big palmetto bugs are gross to see but aren't your real menace. It's the little brown cockroaches that are. They're the ones that if you see one there are many more and can find their way into a suitcase and infest your home waaaaay to easily. If it was a palmetto bug smack it with your shoe and don't worry about it past that. If it was a cockroach call maintenance.

I haven't encountered any roaches in Disney resort rooms but when I worked there and lived in Vista Way my entire building was fumigated - I had to move from building 4 to building 6 along with the other 11 apartments and they de-roached the place top to bottom.

Before I moved I found roaches in my cupboards, cereal boxes, closets, bathtub...anywhere they could get into I found them. Like someone else said, it's Florida...it happens. I don;t like roaches but they don;t bother me more than any other insect. If I had the choice to have roaches or junebugs - I would prefer the roaches.

We haven't seen any bugs in our rooms. I absolutely hate cockroaches or palmetto bugs. UGH! I used to live in FL and I tell you what, I'm so grossed out by them. We live in AR now and we have them where I work. I won't even go into the bathroom. People have actually heard me scream when I see them. When I was a kid we lived with my grand parents in Titusville, FL. My grandfather was too cheap to spray for roaches. Their house was infested. I would have to jump out of the bed to turn on the light and watch them scatter and then run to the bathroom and turn on that light. The toilet was always covered and in the tub. I'm pretty sure this is where my roach phobia comes from. Oh and it didn't help that my older brother used to stick them in my bed.

thanks for the in depth response. I am not sure if it was a palmetto bug or roach, when i hit it it did fly, thankfully out of our door lol I'm always hesitant to kill them because I am a Yankee and my understanding was always like you can't kill them! lol So my first reaction is not to mash it because I am afraid it won't die

I understand its Florida and it happens I was just wondering how other people handle it gosh. I never said it was this huge deal.

I obviously want suggestions what to do if I think its in my room.

Coronado Spring March 2012, found:
1- a old sock
2- a Q-tip
3- a empty prescription bottle
4- a few dead ROACHES (3-4)
5- a medication measuring cup
6- a rock
Mouskeeping wasn't up to par!
Yuck- really? I mean a rock- that's nothing really. A used Q tip? Was all of this perhaps under the bed?
