Harry Potter Ride

Im pretty sure that it would be impossible for Harry Potter to come to Disney World. I mean HP is owned by the WB, which is owned by Universal, so it would probably show up there if anywhere.

This is the biggest misconception that consistently pops up on the Harry Potter threads. The characters and stories of Harry Potter do NOT (repeat NOT) belong to Warner Brothers or any other corporation.

The author, J.K. Rowling, owns the exclusive rights to the CHARACTERS and STORIES. In the United States, Scholastic has the rights to publish the novels and Warner Brothers has the rights to film and distribute the motion pictures along with any associated merchandise. ABC has the right to air the films on television.

As of yet, J.K. Rowling appears to have withheld the rights to develop theme park attractions. Although these rights may have been included as part of the movie deal, this is highly unlikely. As has been noted, the author was extraordinarily picky about who would make the films, eventually deciding that Warner Brothers would do them the most justice.

Warner Brothers, however, has little experience developing high quality theme park attractions, particularly dark rides. In that field, Disney and Universal are clearly the most qualified. Would an author as notoriously picky as J.K. Rowling grant Warner Brothers the theme park rights to her beloved Harry Potter? I think not. And if she had, don't you think we would have already seen Harry Potter "Quidditch" roller coasters at every Six Flags? The argument that Universal Studios is owned by Warner Brothers also doesn't fly, because this was a recent acquisition. Universal and Warner Brothers were completely separate entities when the movie rights were sold.

Simply because Warner Brothers owns the film rights in no way implies that Disney could not create an attraction based on the series of books. Granted, the likenesses of the actors, sets, and other special effects from the movies could not be used in this case. However, it is entirely possible that a stylized version of the Hogwarts universe could be designed by the Imagineers that would in no way infringe on Warner Brothers' rights. In this scenario, the attraction would be based on the books (NOT the movies), which are extraordinarily popular in their own right.

I am not even going to bother getting into the discussion of whether or not such an attraction belongs in Walt Disney World, because it is irrelevant to my argument. My point is that it is not an impossibility based on the notion that Warner Brothers owns the movie rights. Unlikely? Perhaps. But not impossible.

No one said it was impossible to base a ride on the books instead of the movies. We said it isn't going to happen at the Magic Kingdom, and most likely won't happen at any of Disney's other theme parks.

You may not have said that it was impossible (and I never implied that you did), but it is a notion that appears relatively frequently on these threads, and I thought it deserved to be clarified. In fact, I was specifically responding to someone who stated, albeit with some caution, that Warner Brothers' possession of the rights made a Disney attraction an impossibility.

The Posting and You link is great...

So let me get this straight you guys don't think there will ever be a Harry Potter Ride - KIDDING!!!

Harry Potter has nothing to do with Disney - I'm confused as to way so many different people would even dream that Disney would create a ride based off of the Harry Potter Stories. "Scatch Head"

So, just because they show it on ABC they are going to turn it into a ride... Extreme Home Makeover is on ABC you think they'll make that a ride soon?!?!?!

Yes, and lets not forget the Desperate Housewives adventure coming soon to the Kingdom. And the LOST island journey in Adventureland. Just because abc/ abc family plays it doesnt mean it'll become a ride. C'mon people

Argh! It's the rumor that won't DIE! If you plan a trip around the HP ride you will never return to WDW ever because it will never ever show it's ugly face in a Disney theme park.
That and SGE even though that ride has grown on me along with the annoying " Give me back my Chilli Dog!" voice and smell!!!

OK, I have sat on my hands long enough. Stand back, here is my sermon:

No, Harry Potter has nothing to do with Disney. But HP has everything to do with children, magic, good vs evil, friendship and love, just like all the stories that are part of the Disney family of stories.

So many of you don't like Harry? Well you are the minority, the rest of the world does and has spoken. Over 265 millions books sold, almost 3 billion in movie sales, and the appeal to adults is just as strong, if not stronger, than for children. Harry Potter is not going away.

So what if Harry eventually makes it into the Disney parks, for those who hate Harry just SKIP IT!!! The appeal is there, the support will be there from families around the world, and the story fits right in with Disney. I for one hope Disney will do this one day, as I know they would do the HP franchise justice and honor.

My feeling is anyone who has negative things to say about Harry, have you read the books? They are incredibly imaginative, dramatic and weren't written for kids (the story just came to Jo).

There I have had my say. Wands ready!! (grabs wand and is ready for the onslought, lol).

Thank you Linda. Finally someone who is not thick-headed, and does not dismiss this topic or complain about it. I for one agree HP should happen at WDW.

HP has more in comman with Disney then Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. However they all have attractions at WDW. I stand by my statment above.

Now, if Disney does do a HP attraction, would it be based on the movies or books? Aren't the movies based on the books? I wonder how the legal writing would be on the contract and how much Disney would need to shell out in order to use HP in an attraction.... Since they do not own the movie rights, I suppose the attraction can be based on the movies or the character likeness from the movie.. But can they use the character likeness from the book? All the legal jargon that would need to be ironed out... I guess the same can be said for Star Wars and Indiana Jones... Guess we will have ot wait and see..

I am not a HP fan, but, if Disney built an attraction based on HP, I would still go on it.... I would have faith in Disney to create a terrific attraction...
