Happymom's June 2010 WDW Trip Report and....SURPRISE Cruise on the Disney Wonder!!!

Day One: Are you sure we are going to the Polynesian Resort TODAY??

On past trips, we've always had a late flight to Orlando which would put us at our resort after dinner time. This time however, we were thrilled to have a noon flight, which meant we would be able to enjoy the late afternoon and evening at Disney.

We boarded our plane, and just as we settled into our seats we hear "Good afternoon, this is the captain and you are not going to like what I am about to say". Uh oh. He lost me after I heard the words "mechanical problem" because I pretty much went into a fit of panic. He said we were going to have to get off of the plane. I did not argue. The last place I wanted to be was on a plane with a "mechanical problem".

They told us they were going to try to find another plane for us. From another city. That would have to then fly to our city. After they somehow managed to find it. :brick:

An hour later, they announced that they could not find another plane, so they were going to try and fix the one we were supposed to be on. NOT what someone who has a deathly fear of flying (that would be me) wants to hear.

While the kids used up all of their new goodies and surprises I had hidden in their backpacks (you know...the ones that are supposed to entertain the kids during the actual flight), my husband worked hard to try to get us on another flight. All flights to Orlando or anywhere near Orlando were sold out for the rest of the day. And the next day.

Another hour goes by and we are told the good news that we will board the plane at 3:00. At 3:00, they start an announcement which I am sure is going to be about boarding....but instead they say they do not know when OR IF we were going to be able to board today. This was about the time my migraine kicked in.

Finally sometime after 4:00, they let us board. I don't remember much about the flight because I was in zombie mode by that point. We stopped at the McDonald's in the Orlando airport for dinner. Have I mentioned that we had a 6:00 adr for Kona Cafe? Yep. Had to settle for a quarter pounder instead.:hurl: With my migraine in full swing, we headed to the Avis rent a car line. I waited with the kids while my DH stood in line. For an hour. Yes, I said an hour. :fork:

It was about 10:00 p.m. when we finally walked into our room at the Polynesian. One piece of good news is that we got the room we had requested...third floor facing the pool in Tokelau. Here is the view we had from our room:

AWESOME AWESOME report! Sucks about your first day and missing your Kona ADR though.

Thank you!:wave:Yeah, I was seriously about to cry while we were sitting at the MCO McDonald's instead of Kona.

Day Nine: Pirates IN the Caribbean!

This morning we sat on our balcony and watched the ship dock at Castaway Cay. We were delighted that our side of the ship faced the island.

This is what the water looked like straight down under our balcony. My daughter said that when the water sparkles it means a mermaid is nearby:):

We were some of the first passengers off of the ship, so we pretty much had our pick as to which part of the beach we wanted.

This beach was wonderful for kids. The water was perfectly clear, calm and very shallow, so my kids had alot more freedom to play in the water than they do at most beaches. I am not really a beach person, but I LOVED our experience on Castaway Cay!!

My hubby snoozed under an umbrella for awhile (poor thing was still not feeling 100% yet) and I plopped myself down in one of the beach chairs in the water and just enjoyed watching my kiddos play. We rented one of the floats for awhile, and I nearly had a heart attack when a sting ray swam about 6 inches from my feet. My husband started feeling a little bit better and decided to go snorkeling. Lunch on the island was pretty good...a buffet with hot dogs, burgers, bbq, etc.

Words can not even describe how wonderful Castaway Cay is. I would LOVE to do the "double dip" cruise that makes two stops there!

I'm not a real beach girl either (not a fan of sand & sticky salt water) but your pics make me want to go on a cruise just to go to Castaway Cay!

And the last time I really swam in salt water was when I was 18 & a bunch of stingrays swam within about 3 feet from me. I think I kicked up a wake as I sped towards the shore.

Getting back on the ship:

Tonight was pirate night and our dinner was at Triton's again. We dressed like pirates, sort of. My daughter wore white capris with a black peasant shirt and a red sash around her waist. My son wore a pirate shirt we bought him at Disney World and a pirate bandanna on his head. My hubby wore a pirate tshirt and pirate mickey ears, and I wore black capris and a black and white striped shirt. I had a red scarf to go around my waist but forgot to pack it.:brick:

It was also our wedding anniversary. What a fun way to spend an anniversary!! My hubby does not like for me to post pics of him online, so I'll just white his face out.:D

Here is what I had for dinner...I don't remember what it was, but I am pretty sure it was some type of steak.

Also, when kids ask for ketchup on a Disney cruise, this is what they get:

We had quite a bit of time to kill after dinner since there was no show tonight, and the pirate party would not be starting for a couple of hours. So we went looking for characters. Speaking of characters, let me just tell you...if you are a Disney character fan, then a Disney Cruise is the place to be. They are everywhere! And the lines to meet them are SOOO much shorter than in the parks.

First we met Captain Jack Sparrow:

Then Peter Pan stopped us and asked if we had seen Captain Hook.

DSC_0431.jpg

We informed him that we had indeed just seen Captain Hook out on deck 4 under the lifeboats.

Next we took our picture with Pirate Minnie, then watched Pirate Mickey make his entrance:

As it started to get dark, a mysterious fog rolled in and the water became as still as glass. I was fully expecting a pirate ship to appear out of the fog, just like in the POTC movie.

Waiting for The Pirates in the Caribbean deck party to start:

DCL is the only cruise line to do fireworks at sea!

You make a great pirate-ette! The outfits all sound like a they were of the subtle and comfortable variety. Perfect in my book! You're right, that calm water with the fog rolling in looks super-duper creepy. The pirate party looks like fun. How awesome to have fireworks at sea! Still loving the report! Can't wait to see how it all ends!

Here was tonight's towel animal:

DSC_0453.jpg

We adored our cabin steward! And can I just say how much I loved having the cabin serviced TWICE a day?! We'd come back after lunch and the bed would be made, the bunk bed put back into the wall and the couch bed turned back into a couch...bathroom clean, fresh towels, trash emptied. Then when we came back to the room at night for bedtime, the bathrooms had been totally cleaned again, all of the beds turned down, bunk bed down, couch back into a bed...and a cute towel animal with chocolate candy laid out.

Day 10: Day at Sea

Our last day on the boat was spent doing alot of exploring. A four night cruise is just not long enough, and there were still quite a few places on the boat we had not seen yet. We also did lots of character greetings. The princesses (we had Snow White, Tiana, Cinderella and Belle), and Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Donald in their tropical attire.

The highlight of the day was seeing the show "Disney Dreams". I cried throughout the entire thing! It was AMAZING.

I also spent alot of time just looking at this:

Our dinner tonight was at Animator's Palate. Such a cool restaurant! I am sure most of you know this, but for those who don't...everything starts out as black and white, then changes to color throughout your meal.

Even the waiters changed from black and white vests to colored ones.

Ooooh...more report! I'm gobbling it up!!! I've always thought the concept behind Animator's Palette is incredible. I love the color change even with the wait staff's vests. I've seen that on tv several times and it amazes me whenever I see it. I think we may need to do a cruise... :D

Thanks for all of the kind words! I'm hoping to finish up the report tonight.
It has never taken me this long to finish a trip report! I usually type the entire thing up and cut and paste it into the report and have all of my pics ready to go, but this time I am just writing it as I go along.

I'm glad so many of you are wanting to try out a Disney cruise now!

I'm really enjoying your report, the cruise looks like so much fun!
Also, I was so happy to read that you don't love the food at Le Cellier - I thought I was just about the only one!
My 8 yr. old actually agrees with me and thinks it's really gone downhill , but my hubby still loves it (he gets the mushroom filet).
Can't wait for more.....

Your trip report is amazing. I would LOVE to go on the Disney Cruiseline, haven't been on a cruise yet but I've been told they're really good. Would you say that the expense for a Disney Cruise is worth it?
