America gained its independence from Great Britain in 1776. The United Kingdom came into being when GB annexed Ireland in 1801. ;)

I'm a first-generation American born and raised in da Bronx, NY :D (The Empire State, as has been noted)

I know.:) And after Washington's last term, he warned Americans to identify themselves as Americans and not by their individual states. Then, in 1861, the North and South went to war against each other (Civil War), leading to one of the greatest battles ever, Gettysburg, which lasted three days with the Union taking the win on July 4th, America's birthday.:D

First of all, I have to say I love some of the sentences here, and it you read them and have a mind like mine, you'll know which ones I'm talking about.

I'm Wisconsin born and raised. We are known as the Badger State. The badger is our state animal and it comes from when people would make little burrows in the side of hills to set up camp, kind of like badgers. And of course we have the Wisconsin Badgers. We are known for our dairy products (mainly cheese, as @Nemo14 likes to point out). We have some great waterparks in the Wisconsin Dells, too. But the thing I'm most proud about: The Green Bay Packers! :D

Hi and happy 4th from the Tarheel State or Old North State!! We have mountains, piedmont, and the coast. We live in the mountains, which are very beautiful in all seasons. Our area is known for the best apples around!
NC is known as one of the original 13 colonies. We have lots of well-known colleges and universities. Our favorite is Appalachian State, where our DD graduated. UNC at Chapel Hill, Duke, and NC State are some others.
We love winter sports like skiing, hiking and camping, racing, and going to the beach in our state.
If you haven't visited us, please do so. Our state is beautiful!!

And...for the win...What does the word "Empire" refer to in that phrase?
What is New York was the elected seat of the First Federal Congress, and before being elected the first President, George Washington may have coined the phrase of New York being "the seat of the new empire" as the city was growing so quickly and was a financially successful city for it's time but historians do not have clear proof of where the term "empire state" came from. Now I'll have what's behind door one....what...a MagicBand???? Damn. I should have just said because the Empire State Building is there. :D

I am another New Jerseyian to add to the list. If you are familiar with the stereotype map of my state, I am from "Springsteen Country" (Here is the map if you haven't: http://imgur.com/Pwnf4). My area also brought us Danny DeVito and Jack Nicholson.

We are apparently stronger than the storm (Take that nature!), but we sadly all suffer from a terrible disorder that prevents us from being able to pump our own gas.

Same here in Ohio. I live smackdab in the middle of rural farmland and 4-H/FFA are big programs in our school system.

I live in the biggest city (population of about 11,000 when college is in session) in the area, but it's still very hick related. 4-H and FFA are huge programs here, too. When I go to big cities (such as Chicago), I'm always shocked by how fancy things are in places like the financial district. :p
