Almost 100 Trick or Treaters. No Star Wars. Jasmine and other Disney Characters. Wonder Woman, a female Minion (I am dressed as a Minion, Lisa is a Witch), selected Super Heroes, the Joker.

All the kids have been polite as has the parents. Very glad to see that.

At the stroke of ten o'clock I turned off the porch lights and called it a night. Nothing good happens after 10:00 pm on Halloween night (just ask the idiot doctor down the street who gives out erasers), and I'm almost out of candy anyway. Phew! We made it, gang! 🎃

Also at the stroke of ten o'clock I switched gears, said goodnight to the non-alcoholic Swedish Autumnal Punch, and made myself a nice gin martini to celebrate... something. Halloween! That's it, I'm celebrating Halloween. Find below the official stats from The List, my thoughts on the cultural zeitgeist in a changing world, and what it means for Star Wars Land at Disneyland.

Here it is, the hot-off-the-presses final tally from The List 2019, and proof that I've turned off the porch lights and switched from a Swedish punch to a British martini.

422128

As you can see the final tally ended up as this:

Chewbacca - 1
Stormtroopers - 4
Kylo Ren - 0
Rey - 0
Vi Moradi* - 0
Ky'le from Tustin - 0
Hondo - 0

I had one Chewbacca early in the night, who was a dad escorting his two young daughters who were some sort of video game thing. I had 4 Stormtroopers, and they came in three sets; two different boys who were older brothers of girls dressed as frilly princess things, and then two teenage boys escorting their dates, and their dates were dressed up as matching German beer maidens. I kid you not. Apparently they only coordinated their costumes with their friends instead of their dates. Hindsight is 20-20. 🧐

Those were the only Star Wars characters I got tonight, and that's a huge change. Earlier in the 2010's I would get lots of family units dressed as full Star Wars characters. And at least a few young ladies as Princess Leia, and boys as Darth Vader, dad as Chewbacca, etc. But no longer. The Star Wars presence was the weakest I've seen in over a decade. And no Poe. No Finn. Also no Fantastic Beasts or any blue aliens from Pandora. Again.

And absolutely no one showed up as anyone remotely related to anyone in Star Wars Land. No Kylo Ren. No Rey. No Vi Moradi* or Honda Accord.

Not even a Ky'le from Tustin, which is very easy to pull off in Tustin adjacent communities.

My coveted Best Costume awards with the See's Candy baskets went to;

Best Boy Costume - An incredibly realistic young Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy
Best Girl Costume - A junior high aged young lady who was a drop-dead-ringer for Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez in a business suit, and instead of saying "trick or treat!" she said in a Kardashian accent "Like, can I have some candy, before, like, the world ends?" I died! Her mom was 10 feet behind and whom I know by seeing around the neighborhood, and when I awarded her daughter the Best Costume award she seemed more excited than her daughter.
Best Family Costume - This was a wild card, but it was a family who had dressed up as the crew from that hilarious CBC comedy Schitt's Creek. Dad was Mr. Rose, mom was Mrs. Rose, daughter was Alexis, and son was Mayor Schitt. Again, I died. The families in my neighborhood really go all out!

I had about 110 trick-or-treaters. I had 60 Reese's and 60 Hershey bars, plus my three Best Costume Awards baskets from See's Candy. I have a dozen candy bars left.

But again, what's interesting is how the Star Wars fad that was so rampant earlier in the 2010's has totally dropped off. I had a lot of Marvel superheros, I had a smattering of classic Disney princesses (Cinderella, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, that Hawaiian one, etc.). I had a whole bunch of gory monsters. I had some weird video game people that I'm unclear on. I had a surprising number of political figures (AOC, two President Trumps, and a dad being a really creepy Adam Schiff). I had ghouls and ghosts. I had a few zombies. I had some older boys dressed up as military guys. Earlier in the evening I had a lot of little boys dressed as firefighters and policemen, which was so cute as Halloween always coincides with fire season in SoCal. And dozens of girls dressed as various sparkly princesses.

But Star Wars? It wasn't really very popular this year. And absolutely no one dressed as any of the Star Wars Land Batuu characters. It seems that Star Wars fad has passed, or been tapped out, or the new movies just aren't resonating with people. Or all of that combined.

The times seem to be changing.

At least my martini is still the same! I hope you all had a wonderful Halloween!

I know some folks dislike it when older kids and teenagers go out trick-or-treating, saying that Halloween should only be for "little kids". But I think it's wonderful when costumed teens and even college kids go out trick-or-treating, and I always happily give them candy and kudos on my doorstep.

These young people could be out doing drugs or getting into serious trouble, but instead they focus on elaborate costumes and funny sight gags. And I just love that!

Like this young lady. She's a tin of Danish butter cookies, turned into a sewing kit with thread and measuring tape. Because... um... because she's not doing drugs and not waking up in a gutter!

I enjoyed all our visitors. I keep upgrading my décor, with lighting, sound and motion detectors. Last year, I bought a 10 foot Pumpkin Head Character (Inflatable) on clearance (floor sample), so the first year in the front yard. A big hit, and multiple folks were taking photos with it....

Of course, my simple basic Snoopy light display is still going strong in a place of honor.

Had some kids scared to walk to the front door. (And my display is basic PG, nothing really jumping out at you, just sound and light.....)

Hope everyone had a great Halloween, Our family did!

I took the boy and his friends trick or treating last night. They were dressed as rocket racoon, green lantern, dracula and my son was Linus from Peanuts. Perfect outfit for him since he IS Linus. Anyway, we saw lots of crazy clowns like Pennywise and some Killer Klowns. We did see one girl dressed up as Rey complete with staff! There were five adult stormtroopers handing out candy at one house. One kid was a full size vending machine. He even dispensed treats! My daughter went to a party dressed as Sully from Monsters Inc.

Umm, she is out playing with needles! ;)

My neighborhood always gets bombarded with people and have to close the streets. The fire department gets involved and gives out candy and people around the neighborhood collect toys and money for them for the upcoming Holidays.
This year we thought it would be different since we woke up at 12:30 a.m. with huge blaze burning a block away due to some idiots in a car chase. Talking about the 46th st fire.

Got orders to evacuate the area and hope that the high winds did not turn the fire towards the neighborhood. Luckily the fire department was able to keep the fire within the large river/ natural wildlife sanctuary from spreading deep into the housing. It was bit chaotic when it reached some houses with large properties along the river that had horses and other animals in danger. The fire turned south and spared the buildings and animals and torched one of many park areas but then extremely close to an animal recuse and option center. The fire department agin protected the property but were unable to safe the business next to it.

All said and done by the late afternoon the evacuation was lifted and tour surprised people started showing up. Luckily i had already bought quite a large amount of candies and yes i am one of those that gives books as well. Parents and children alike enjoy the fact that i give the young ones reading books as well as Coloring books and small packs of crayons. majority of time i let them choose and surprisingly most young children pick the books. Being a Disney fan i also enjoy giving anyone dressed as Disney owned characters a Disney souvenir.

This year we had quite a few Princess again, Plenty of Marvel characters mostly Iron man and Captain America. A couple of those funny inflated Dinosaurs and even a chicken were among the group. two Harley Quinn but no other DC character. when it comes to star wars we got a family dressed as star wars characters all different and a couple Darth Vaders. quite a few Firemen which i gave extra chocolates and a few police men. Creepiest costume was a teenager dressed exactly like Pennywise including the red balloon that kept creeping out of no where and freak the women out.

Started @ 5:30 and stopped at 10pm, the fires didn't seem to scare many people away and surprised us that people even showed up. It was windy for a while and helped clear smoke. Neighbor kept going till 111 since this year they did a Pirate themed scare zone.

My simple but effective Halloween decor

Costume Update and Day After Reflections:

I just Googled "Pennywise" and now realize I had a couple of boys dressed like that person. I had assumed it was some sort of video game thing but realize now it's from a horror movie. Creepy.

And for the record, another year where absolutely no one dressed up like a Pandora character.

The idiot doctor a few houses down who gives out erasers and magnets instead of candy didn't get his trees tp'ed, but his pumpkins were smashed in the street on my early morning walk. The depths to which this person (who went to at least six years of college) just doesn't get it year after year never ceases to amaze me. He's like the Bob Chapek of Halloween.

I checked my video feed this morning and not a single teenager came onto my lawn or walk after I turned the lights off at 10:00pm. Pumpkins survived. Giving out good candy is the ultimate protection.

So many fun and polite kids last night though! By yesterday afternoon the Santa Ana's had stopped completely and it was just a crisp and calm evening in OC. A lovely Halloween.

But again I say, from my unscientific view, the Star Wars craze of a few years ago has really died out. And not a single mention of anything related to Star Wars Land characters or plotlines.

Hmm... 🧐

This was our first Halloween in our new house in Anaheim, so we had no idea what to expect. We ended up with about 130 trick-or-treaters, ranging in age from toddler to late teen.

Not a single Star Wars character that I can remember. I saw one Groot, one girl dressed as Darla (from Finding Nemo), some princesses, and a group with 3 little girls dressed as Dorothy from Wizard of Oz.

There were quite a few parents dressed up, which was cool. The kids were all really friendly and polite, which was very nice. I think giving out full size candy bars helped. 😋:)

Hey I have a personal anecdote that doesn't actually matter that I can share, too! I'll even bold things!

One of my best friends and her boyfriend love Batuu and visit there every off day they have together. They have characters, play the Datapad games (when battery life permits), and have an amazing time interacting with all of the Cast. Recently, my friend bought her boyfriend a lightsaber experience for his birthday, and the look of sheer joy on his face when he got to fulfill a life-long dream made her cry.

But no one dressed up as a Star War for Halloween and visited one specific message board poster's house so it doesn't matter I guess.
I'm sorry, but I think we're really grasping at straws here for backhanded reasons to deem SWL a failure.

Absolutely. Confirmation bias is a hell of a thing. Remember that Disney Parks exist outside the vacuum of internet forums.

Sometimes when I'm at the grocery store and I don't pass people talking about the sun in the sky I get nervous that maybe its not there anymore!

What did you expect? Sidewalks flooded with little Hondos? Do they even make and sell a costume?

We get it.

Full disclosure, and a peek inside my brain:

This entire thread was a lark. A fun, seasonal conversation. And it stems from years ago on this same website after Iger entered into that Billion dollar deal with James Cameron, where I would track the number of kids dressing up as Pandora characters on Halloween and report back to breathless observers here. (Current Tally After Many Halloweens = Zero Pandora Costumes)

So this year I changed it up as I wondered if the new Star Wars Land would impact the costume trends in a neighborhood seven miles east of Disneyland where literally every family has Annual Passes. (It's actually a zoning requirement in Villa Park)

And what we learned is, not only did Star Wars Land not become a costume trend for kids and teens, but the overall number of Star Wars costumes in general has noticeably declined from previous years. And then a bunch of us here, who enjoy each other's company, in the hours leading up to and through Halloween evening all talked about it and laughed and made jokes. Because it's a message board where people do that sort of stuff.

And then at ten o'clock I turned out the porch lights and made a nice martini. 🍸

That's how my brain works, and how this message board often works. Enjoy! :D
