and anyways... they've shown on ER before... not in a $exual mannor but still... a breast is a breast to a 12 year old boy

Get used to this because everyone from David Letterman to The Oscars to SNL will be spoofing this incident. If it was publicity Janet wanted, it is publicity she will get.

As far as Europe being more Liberal as guwag pointed out... I don't mind seeing this kind of stuff and on some occaisons more often than not. But, I want to see it on my time. Not in the middle of a big football game. I think there is a time for everything and this wasn't it. I guess what makes me more angry is that these pop stars think they have to use "shock" to sell stuff rather than pure talent. Let's just hope Rosanne Barr doesn't pull this kind of stunt if she gets a new talk show. :hurl:

I'm always intrigued as to the perception of nudity in America - why it is usually seen as such a no-no.

American TV has to be one of the most restricted in the developed Western World. For example in England there is only (I think) one swear word that cannot be said, and just one thing that cannot be shown after the watershed - and we're one of the more tightly regulated ones in Europe!

Granted that pre-watershed nudity is still a no-no as it should be, on the odd occasion that it does occur it doesn't seem to cause too much controversy, usually laughter - like the streakers at Wimbledon or The Lords that we get most years - even a Snooker Championship one year

I suppose that being from Europe I have a more liberal attitude to that sort of thing - As far as I can remember as as it was back in 1997, when Geri Halliwell's boobie popped out to say Hi! at the Brit Awards people just laughed at it!

The thing that still really makes me laugh though about US TV has to be the blurred buttocks :hammer:

EDIT: Even the BBC News has a gallery of pictures entitled "Janet Jackson's Super Bowl strip"

that was not offending anyone, you make a good point. I was watching something on reality tv from around the world, and it was quite intersting how they show SO MUCH more on television overseas then they do here.

Unfortunatley, the US is one of the only countries to consider a glimpse of a bare female breast so appaling. Think of all the women who get dirty looks when they are breastfeeding their baby in public. In Japan they print photos of topless women in newspaper advertisements (not in ographic publications). Someone watching in another country probably just assume us Americans finally realize the naked body doesn't always have to do with s e x.

I would of rather had Aerowsmith sing the whole 15 minutes.
Now that would rock.

:sohappy:

BTW it is "would have" or you could use the contraction "would've". :sohappy:

That's just it, it wasn't done well. It was meant to titillate or shock. Sometimes I wonder if America's failure to go down the morally corrupt road has kept us from joining the rest of the world in socio-economic prowess. Last time I looked, I don't live in Japan. I live in the U.S.A. A country founded on morals from God Fearing men.

Too Political? Probably.

Troll Fodder? Could be.

Afraid to say it? Definitely not.

Japan certainly isn't morally corrupt. Their morals and ethics are stronger than ours. I lived and worked there for quite a while and was viewed as a bit of a slacker even though I worked my tail off. I consider myself to have a strong work ethic, yet I could never prove that to them since theirs is so much stronger. I wasn't defending the act in my post. Just pointing out that it's probably not a huge deal in another country and they probably don't hate us for it as another poster said. In fact they are probably pleased and thinking that maybe the US isn't quite so prudish after all. My question is would it have been less shocking if she had torn the costume off herself. Unfortunately, in this country probably not. We Americans just can't see the nude form in anything other than a $exual way. :brick:

You are right. They put up a big statue in downtown Nashville called 'Musica' (or something like that) with naked statues dancing... very artistic. It is right at the beginning of Nashville's 'Music Row'. All the statues are nude and anatomically (sp?) correct, including the males.

This made Nashville into a frenzy. Everyone complained and wants it down. It is a nice piece of art but no one can see that. (Mind you, these are BIG statues and they are all nude... etc, etc... you get the picture)

I aggree with your last sentence if the intention is not meant to be seen in a sexual way. You would have a hard time convincing anyone that that whole halftime show was not geared toward $ex. Not what should be shown at halftime of a Football Game with millions of KIDS watching. The Japan comment was nothing more than, I don't live in Japan, so what they do there should have no effect on what we do here.

Where is the darn milk and cookies. I NEED A COOKIE :zipit:

Well I posted in the Super bowl thread , I didn`t watch the super bowl, but I caught the halftime show on the news and all I can do is express my disgust over it!
So much so I e mailed the NFl commisioner and told him of my disgust and this was the reply I got........Dear NFL Fan,

Thank you for your comments and interest in the National Football League.

We were extremely disappointed by the MTV-produced halftime show. It was
totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content
of the show.

The show was offensive, inappropriate and embarrassing to us and our fans.

We will change our policy, our people and our processes for managing the
halftime entertainment in the future in order to deal far more effectively
with the quality of this aspect of the Super Bowl.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue

NOw I`m sure he didn`t send this himself, but his office. But I hope he is telling the truth!

Here in Orlando there was a shop that put a lifesize statue of David on the sidewalk in front of their store. They were ordered by the city to put clothes on it or remove it. Our (former) mayor always insisted she was trying to bring culture to Orlando.

...I will be writing the NFL. Thanks for the email.

I say: You go Janet!
Halftime stunk, but at least Janet and Timberlake had the guts to shake things up a bit.

Wonderful. More please....

FCC will investigate!!

The FCC has announced that they will investigate the incident; and that has meant that each station carrying it could be fined $27,500 (maximum), for indecency on the public airwaves, which threatens their licenses.

Although they may not actually be fined much, this action could actually put pressure on CBS/MTV and/or Justin and Janet (as the stations that get in trouble turn and sue them).

I am actually curious as to whether Janet and Justin will get in trouble personally; just like the streaker who was apprehended by police (though ultimately not arrested, I do not think).

It looks like, for once, authorities might be treating celebrities and MTV just like they treat common people who act indecently in public....
