I also find it odd and would have liked for DCA to include more San Francisco but I doubt it now. The Hollywood Tower Hotel is turning into an alien fortress. Soaring over California into Soaring Over the World. I don't think we have a shot in hell.

Maybe the park will be due for a name change at the same time they change the name of DHS?

So i just watched Guardians of the Galaxy today (yeah I know, I'm a little late) and I was wondering if this ride will fit into the movie at all or will it have its own story. Because the ride is about the guardians breaking out of the Collector's fortress/industrial building/whatever-its-called, and so were they originally captured by the Collector? It would make more sense if the ride were based on the guardians breaking out of prison (like in the movie).

You're trying to find logic where there is none.

The ride doesn't even fit into the land it's going in, let alone the movie (based on what has been said so far). And yes, breaking out of prison would have probably made more sense. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Maybe the ride will have some references to the sequel coming out.

Don't tell Curious Constance, but I still haven't seen GOTG yet. :D

To answer your question I wouldn't be surprised if it's an original storyline, similar to the premise that Star Tours is a post Return of The Jedi intergalactic travel service.

If it were a re-telling of the movie's prison break-out, then you'd have people trashing it as a "book report." This is damned if you do and damned if you don't territory for Disney. People say they want the IP to tell a new story, and when it does, then they (or others) complain it wasn't related to the movie. (I'm on the side of a new story.)

As to the plot of breaking out of the Collector's fortress in relation to the movies...

While GotG2 probably won't have the Collector as a major character, the Infinity War movie probably will considering the Collector has one of the Infinity Stones and is seeking the others. Also, in the comic book, the Collector is a recurring foe for the Guardians and Avengers.
