Guardians of the Galaxy Mission Breakout announced for Disney California Adventure

How has DCA been doing in the Tower's absence? Have there been noticeable drops in attendance, lower guest satisfaction surveys, increased waits elsewhere, etc?

The place was packed last week when I strolled through. Absolutely packed.

Grizzly River Run is also closed for refurbishment now. But people seemed to be having a very good time, lots of smiles, no protests on Buena Vista Street or anything like that.

To be fair, I'm still mad about Kim Irvine's Off-Center Window® in New Orleans Square.

I usually defend changes to Disneyland even controversial changes but the New Orleans square remodel is indefensible. The forced perspective of the second story was destroyed, plaster walls transition to stucco walls, fixtures don't match. I usually forget about how angry it makes me while I'm in the park but if I stand outside Blue Bayou too long I get frustrated and have to leave the land.

Look at the backside of Everest. It makes Mission Breakout look like Cinderella Castle in comparison.

Although not Disney's finest moment, this works better than this picture suggests from guest accessible areas. The back of Tower of Terror is more visible to guests than the back of Everest.

If it doesn't face guests in the park, it doesn't need to be themed. The back of the building is themed at the same level it was as TOT. Harbor Blvd doesn't need a fully themed backside of TOT/GOTG.

DCA has two expansion areas left - one is directly behind ToT. Although this won't be "on stage" immediately, it will eventually.

I think the back of the building is better than what was there before.

I highly doubt they literally painted over the windows. They obviously used something to make them blend in with the surrounding paint color. But paint a window, I highly doubt it.

This assumes that they were actually windows to begin with. They weren't.

Here's screen capture of ToT from the intersection of Harbor and Disney Way.

Here's what it looks like about a half block south. The back of the building is pretty much obscured by trees for the rest of the way to Katella.

Looks pretty visible to me, especially considering the number of people who pass through this intersection. Streetview is more than a little misleading in terms of how obscured the building is from the sidewalk, parking areas, guest transportation, etc. No one is going to miss a ~180 foot tall building because of a few palm trees along the sidewalk.

The back of Expedition Everest is visible only from a portion of Animal Kingdom's parking lot, is also largely obscured from most angles as well, and only visible from a greater distance. The Everest analogy is more relevant if one is talking about the back of Carsland in terms of visibility and impact on guest experience.

No one is going to argue that any of these examples deserve any awards. Views from the surrounding area aren't the major problem here - it's just a major sign that there's not a whole lot being invested in this change. The bigger issue is that the back of GotG faces an expansion pad at DCA.

You're right, it's visible at that intersection, but from that distance how much detail of the windows can you actually see?

I don't think people were arguing that the windows alone were an issue from any particular vantage point - but that they're more an indication of the general lack of investment and attention to detail in this project. The same was true of ToT, so its not a new criticism. I'm also not sure you can say that the new color scheme does anything to improve the back of the building.

It's possible that the backs of the SW Land show buildings and the unfinished rock work on top of them will be visible from Disneyland Drive and the Mickey & Friends Parking Garage.

I expect this will be true because - history. And I'll go on record as being unconcerned about the painted windows on the back of the tower.
