The lift slings were purple in in some pictures I saw for fins. Those are, if following OSHA rule I was taught, a 1 ton sling. So that would make sense to me.

I'm still amazed by all the great updates Peter Pan's Flight got when they were able to close it because Mermaid had opened.
And the way Expedition: Everest sparkles because the opening of Pandora finally allowed them to close it for enhancements.

If you think Space is safe after Tron opens, you ain’t been paying attention.
SM is gonna require a lot of investment very soon. It doesn’t have a movie franchise like HM or Pirates or JC. And a very, very similar ride, built by the current regime and likely to be more popular, is feet away. I can easily see Disney announcing the long-awaited Tomorrowland redesign - which includes the removal of the redundant, out-dated SM. Big shiny plans. The usual folks defend it vociferously. The project drags out for six or seven years. Lots of cuts, little by little. And WDW ends up with some new facades, a new C- or D-ticket (Stitch replacement?) and no SM.
Do I think that’s the most likely outcome? Nope. Do I think there’s about a 30% chance SM is gone within ten years? Yup.

Sorry, but no way in hell is Disney removing what might be one of their most iconic attractions. It’s even been held in a high enough regard recently to be one of the original individual individual purchase lane only attractions. Disney has no interest in completely removing SM.

Yeah. It’s iconic. And that matters to YOU and ME. But what people on here struggle with is that most of the decision-making execs at Disney are NOT fans. Many don’t even respect the parks. How much merch does SM move? How much less (or more) would nostalgia for it move after it closes? What is it’s cross-media franchise potential? How much will it cost to fix? Those questions matter. The fact that fans think it’s “iconic” does not.
If you told posters on these boards ten years ago what the resort would look like today, NO ONE would believe you. Not a SINGLE poster. And yet people still think there is some fan-defined line Disney won’t cross. Sure, they’ve made “impossible” choices over and over and over, but they won’t do it AGAIN…
Pirates and HM are safe. JC is safe until about five years after the film franchise flounders. Small World is probably safe. Other then that… it’s about the numbers and the egos.
In the ride itself? No. Not that I know. In the queue? Last I heard there were two. If that is the case, then that is far beyond a shame.

From a sane outsiders perspective, it would be stupid to close SM. Also from a sane outsider’s perspective, it was stupid to build a very, very, very similar ride right next door.
Where do you think Space ranks on the “iconic” scale of JUST the Magic Kingdom? I’d slot it behind Pirates, HM, Small World, Splash, Jungle Cruise, and Big Thunder, in roughly that order. So it’s about the seventh most “iconic” ride.
I also consider Country Bears and Tiki Room iconic. Are they untouchable?

I'd put Space only behind Pirates. JC has gotten a recent boost due to its movie, and so will Haunted Mansion if its movie is good. You could argue for Small world, but I'd argue it's more infamous than iconic.

If you think Space is more iconic then Mansion or Small World, I think you’re allowing your personal preferences to color your understanding of general perceptions of certain rides. Here’s an easy test - compare the amount of Space Mountain merchandise to the amount of HM merchandise.

Among Disney fans, Haunted Mansion is definitely more iconic, but in terms of the general populace, if we put Haunted Mansion ahead of Space Mountain, I don't think it's that far ahead.
I think Space Mountain is held near and dear to Parks fans. HM is more popular with general Disney fans.

HM is about to launch its SECOND attempt at a film franchise, just starred in a D+ Muppets special, moves mountains of merch at every price point, and has influenced haunted attractions at theme parks around the world.
Look, you love Space, I love Space - but it is not one of the top five most iconic attractions in its own park. Management would absolutely scrap it if the financials made sense.

Honestly think it's a pretty mediocre attraction. Notice how my account is centered around Splash Mountain yet I'm not arguing for it being iconic.
This scene in Space Mountain has been in countless commercials.
This is the most popular Haunted Mansion POV I can find on YouTube. Only has 2.6 million views

If we assume Haunted Mansion is more iconic than Space Mountain among the general public, then, like I said earlier, it isn't by much. Haunted Mansion is much more adorned by Theme Park fans than the GP, and those fans are the ones that drive merchandise volume.

The external structure of Space Mountain is easily (IMHO) the third most iconic image of Disney parks after the castle and SSE. It’s instantly recognizable by many people even those who aren’t huge Disney fans.
I’m not saying the ride will never be replaced but I would expect anything going there to retain the external architecture (ie at worse get the GMR to MMRR treatment). More likely is if they every replace it is it would be Space Mountain but “now featuring Wall-E” or such.
