What does soon mean to you? I wouldn't be surprised if they wait til D23 next July.
That was my expectation pretty much from the start.

"How do you guys like that Guardians of Tower of Terror we just opened in DCA?"

*crickets*

"Glad to hear that. Because now a new ride that's purpose built is coming to Epcot inside that old worn out Energy building."

*unison face palm from DLR and WDW fans. Some just accept that EPCOT Center is dead and are thankful it's not that disgusting GoToT idea*

Aren't you going to D23? You will have front row seats.

Wellp. I'll be taking my last nap on Ellen's Energy Adventure in two weeks, then. All joking aside, I've always loved Ellen's Energy Adventure.... It was a GREAT ride, 20 years ago. 10 Years was definitely the life span of having Ellen's theme though. An awesome concept for its time. One of my childhood favorites, but sometimes it is time to see something go. Guardians I think will create an awesome attraction, much like Frozen did for Maelstrom.

If it is not closed when we go the end of Sept, we'll be riding UoE just in case it does shut down before our next visit. We skipped Maelstrom several years ago and have regretted not seeing it one last time before it closed. While we liked Maelstrom, I'm not a big fan of UoE and we've skipped it for years, so it won't be a sad ride- just one to say goodbye. That whole area is a quick walk through for us- skip UoE, shake my head at the still-empty WoL building, ride MS once or twice, and ride TT via the single rider line. Done. Sad to say, but true- Future World has been dead for years.

@marni1971 has said the area is going to change- won't be Epcot anymore, or something to that effect- so sounds like big changes are coming. He also mentioned a huge redo in landscaping and the Communicore building. Honestly, I'm ready for it. If they change Future World to Universe of Discovery, etc, and bring the area back to life, great! I'm hoping the new theme will be an exciting one.

On my visit I coincidentally rode Captain EO and Maelstrom without knowing they would close in a few years... If Ellen's Energy Adventure is next I can add that to the list.

the energy pavilion as a whole just hurts to look at; it's a big part of the ongoing TGIF synergy between abc and the parks ("full house" and "roseanne" episodes, the drew carey mgm show, and the "boy meets world" roller coaster all come to mind) and that has not held up at all in the last 20 years. it's a real testament to disney's wanting to take risks when that awful ride has been sitting there for so long. future world, indeed. more like "past world," am i right? folks? folks??

Im for keeping UOE and showing ELLEN the DOOR.
.. And I saw STITCH ONCE. As far as I am concerned, they already closed IT.

Ok, UOE in its hey day was great, but then all of E.P.C.O.T. Center was, it was new and fresh and had something to say. But the guests like to see change, which is not what happens at these parks. Change comes slowly, usually when there is a gala celebration approaching. There is already ONE park that is more or less losing its identity and theming, And EPCOT is next. I have a bad feeling about the direction things are going as one member said, There's going to be 3 Magic Kingdoms. Hows that going to work out for you?

Ok, ok, I'll crawl back under my rock now.

This is the Harry Potter effect. If only somebody warned of this...

Universal has, had, or will have so much frivolous Potter merch that any Potter fan never dreamed of being able to buy , exclusively in the parks. That's a big reason why Potter is such a big hit. You can get 98% of Disney theme park merch anywhere. I don't get the point of them using so many IPs for attractions to sell merch when they're just going to put it online and or sell it in other gift shops and the only exclusive things to the shop are some shirts and pins. I really hope we start seeing some more creative and exclusive merch specifically for the theme parks. Stuff like the Cogsworth clock.

Oof. Yeah, if this is all true it's a real gut punch.

I genuinely enjoyed the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but I can't say I have much desire to go on a ride based on it. Maybe in the right themed area, with the right context, but, well, if this means gutting Energy, it does mean the pavilion concept is effectively dead at EPCOT, which is tough to stomach.

I'm with what some others have said about UoE; it's something that could readily be updated given that there are popular scientists out there making some decent dents in pop culture, and reaching out potentially to alternative energy companies could allow it to go in a new direction (while keeping the dinosaurs, I'd hope). My mom recently recalled to me how the original UoE was one of the first places where she got to see almost anything about various alternative energies we now see becoming more ubiquitous, so combining something like that with, say, a guy like Neil deGrasse Tyson (heck, keep Bill Nye in there if you like and have them team up!) could certainly do the trick.

But, again, slapping the IP on there is a better way to guarantee longer lines for the first couple of years it's reopened. I do question the possibility of diminishing returns on that, though. Still crossing my fingers this won't come to pass, but I'll sit back and hope the rumors I heard about the big "tombstone" monuments outside of SSE being removed might be true.

Hopefully, they new theme will not be simply a clone of MK, but a more inventive one. We'll have to wait and see.
