DCA's TOT conversion to Guardians was called Project Slammer, according to a projection malfunction that happened today where the info appeared on the elevator door. Is Slammer the elusive S for this project?

I just don't see why Universal wouldn't try to get the Guardians once May 2018 rolls around.

There are two possible reasons this might not happen.

1. Just being in a movie with characters Uni has the rights to might not be enough to put them in the same family.
2. The makeup of the families was locked down at the time the contract was made and doesn't change. The contract does mention a spate documents that spells out the family relationship at that time.

The clause that mentions the character schedule also includes future characters. That schedule defined who Universal would be able to use in developing the land, it did not lock down the families that were used. A big summer blockbuster establishes a large public connection. I know there is precedent that would agree that Marvel decides what is and isn't, but it also seems crazy that Disney could do something as simple as move a character on a spreadsheet and end Universal's rights. And regardless of whether or not the argument would fly, why not at least give it a try?

Well if they are already building it at the time Universal tries to sue, I'd imagine you go with the status when construction began. I doubt any update to characters being excluded could be retroactive to the start of time.

Perhaps that's why they are finally committing to a construction schedule?

Good points. To me there are only three possible scenarios here.

1. GoTG is clear the Disney to use and that won't change in 2018.
2. Disney has worked this out with Uni and can use the characters.
3. All the rumors of a GoTG ride coming to WDW are 100% BS, because I doubt Disney would have gotten as far as rumored without first being sure they have the rights.

I don't doubt that Disney believes they are fine. The whole reason for lawsuits or, in the case of this deal, arbitration regarding such deals is because people do act outside their bounds and it's not always a deliberate disregard for the agreement. I get why Disney would see themselves as in the clear. What I don't get is why Universal would agree if they were consulted or not try to make the case. Yes, there would be costs associated but the potential upside is including another hit franchise for only that up front price.

Butthurt Opinion:
Honestly Universal should stop fighting with Disney about Marvel's Orlando theme park rights, so Hollywood Studios would have some pretty sweet superhero encounters with names like Iron Man and Black Widow :bored:, so please arguing about Guardians being at Universal, Disney is ok to use Guardians characters in the Orlando parks *facepalms*
There is no indication that Disney and Universal are fighting over Marvel. Universal has a valid contract and has stated they have no interest in ending the deal.

Maybe Universal just doesn't want them? I don't think they'd build a GOTG ride if there'd be any trouble in a year from now.

I could see doing something like a M&G or monorail wrap without being sure you have the rights, but I have a hard time believing they would spend a lot of time and money developing an attraction without first being sure they have the rights.
