I would approach the refurb cautiously, but i do think it needs an upgrade..

...and a Die Hard scene wouldn't go a miss :lookaroun.

I like the popcorn idea!

As for horror movies it does depend upon the age. Some silent horror classics are public domain films and Disney has used clips from the 1925 Phantom of the Opera for TV programing before so a true horror scene could be done. However once you get to stuff like the versions of Frankenstein and Dracula from 1931 you're getting into rights issues. Later horror films then get into issues with suitable content for a Disney park ride and I think Alien does a good double duty of representing sci-fi and horror.

I agree with Martin, upgrade the effects tweak the script but don't really change the content. The last thing we need is for some Micheal Bay film to be in it. The exception I'd make is for Gone With the Wind as it was originally intended to be there in the first place.

well...my idea is a little different.

I would do a whole ride overhaul, and completely change the AAs and do entirely new scenes.

My idea is to change the ride with the times. Now that it is called Disney Hollywood Studios, instead of MGM, I would retheme the ride to be entirely Disney oriented.

And because the term "studios" still incorporates Television as well as Movies, I would include a few scenes from Disney Television as well.

Yeah...there would probably have to be a Hannah Montana scene, and maybe a HS Musical one too...but I would love to focus on older television series as well...
Begin with more historical showws, leading into modern ones...

Have Zorro swordfighting on a rooftop, maybe the Swamp Fox in a scene, Spin and Marty, and the whole Mickey Mouse Club gang in another scene...

Then do scenes from early live action Disney Movies...Treasure Island, Pollyanna, or Parent Trap...or any Hayley Mills flick...include early Herbie, and Flubber, and the gy Dog, Rocketeer, Babes in Toyland...etc...movies that were hugely popular in their time, and still remembered as Disney Classics.

Maybe not these specific options...but well...you get the idea.

My other thought is to rehaul the entire ride to highlight those movies that incorporated both animation and live action.
I'm sure that the technology exists to put AAs in something that resembles 3D animation...in other words really incorporate them into a scene that has animation in front and behind them.
I would love to see the Penguins dancing with Bert from Mary Poppins...the Beautiful Briny scene from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the scene from the Three Caballeros...etc. That would make my day!

But my point is that they don't need to feature the old Hollywood films of other companies...because there are other parks that do that, and really everyone has different ideas about what is old (or new)"Hollywood". Why not focus on the richness that is the Disney Film and TV library? The ride would have a definite nostalgia factor, that I currently don't find in this version.

You wouldn't be referring to Phantom of the Megaplex by any chance, would you? :D

Myself, I really think it would be cool to show off some newer movies (good quality ones, of course). I don't know if the fact that they bought Marvel would change any ideas.

Lord of the Rings, The Dark Knight, and maybe even Spider Man come to mind.

Yes I would indeed! Plus Crystal the stock footage spewing television character from Adventures in Wonderland used a clip too.

But I don't think it would be wise to have Nosferatu or Chaney's Hunchback in the ride for example as the current Alien and Witch scare kids enough already (or at least would if they worked better).

Call me crazy; but here's a list of (modern) great movies I' like to see in a redo of the GMR (beware, it's a lot of characters).

Lion King
Star Wars
Nightmare Before Christmas
Beauty and the Beast
Fantasia 2000
Finding Nemo
Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs
Indiana Jones
Pinocchio
Aladdin

Note: this ride has nothing to do with Old Hollywood :p

Personally I like the ride pretty much the way it is. There are a few things I would change (or at least be okay with them changing anyway).

First off I HATE the new outfits that they brought in a couple of years ago. Bring back the old ones! The new ones make all the cast members look like ushers which is fine for the ones outside the entrance and in the queue area but not for the ones that actively participate in the ride.

Also the Aliens need either fixing or hiding better because it really annoys me how you can see them well before you get to those sections of the Alien segment.

If I was to totally get rid of any segment then it would probably be The Wizard of Oz. I know people love it but honestly it has no real historical significance within cinematic history and it's a pretty large area. I also hate the way that, when there are two cast members in that room at once, you hear all the human speech twice and it sounds terrible.

To the previous poster that commented about a lack of nostalgia, I would suggest that the ride as is probably holds a lot more nostalgia for the vast majority of visitors than any kind of Disneyfied version would. Certainly the majority of foreign visitors won't have seen Zorro or the other tv shows you suggested. It's also quite inappropriate to show them in the Chinese theatre and to change the facade of that building would, imo, be a crime because it accurately represents what the original would have looked like in its heyday (which Mann's Chinese Theatre, as it stands today in LA doesn't).

Oh, and for the previous poster that suggested Edison's studio....he may have pioneered making films but I think it is dangerous ground to suggest that he invented motion pictures. It would be more appropriate to have a scene from Birth of a Nation due to it being the first full-length feature blockbuster. Although I'm not about to suggest that that film is ever put anywhere near a Disney Park.

A bit about silent pictures would be pretty cool, although I don't know where they could slot it in.

It needs to have scenes from the Goonies with Chunk doing the Truffle Shuffle added, Big Trouble in Little China with Kurt Russell driving his rig with the "Haulin Butt" naked lady mud flaps, Something from Spaceballs. That would be a great movie ride.

I dunno. For me, at least, this:

is a heck of a lot scarier than

Well, I can befuddle complainers with thousands of hidden details in GMR, so I think it's still perfect.

I would redo the new script and costumes, both additions too far, refresh the scenes, do some effect fixin', replace the AAs ala Spaceship Earth, and lastly I'd partner with Turner Classic Movies to sponsor the attraction, add some good memorabilia (NOTHING FROM NARNIA), as well as lengthen the trailer reel in the queue. Also I'd reedit the end film using less Narnia and more from the TCM Vault.

Lastly, GMR merch!
