Thanks!

Terrific video! At first I thought people were kidding about the (needed) update to the pavillion. It looks like fun! Thank you for posting it. Mike

I think I'll definitely check this one out. Too bad I haven't ridden it in such a long time...I really don't remember the original song. However -- I do have footage of it on a DVD! *makes note to check it out later tonight* :D

It doesn't sound that bad at all. Sure it would have been FANTASTIC if they had kept the song as an update with the characters, but at least this doesn't look like it belongs in Fantasyland. Can't wait to see it sometime next year.

that video makes me sad .. what a cheapo upgrade (basicly some cartoon scenes uploaded to the videoprojectors) ... at least spend some money in some super duper AA in the last scene (that cinema loop)

Mixed feelings.... it`s not a bad upgrade.... but it`s not a stunner either. I didn`t expect any AAs but I hope this is due to the rides `C Ticket` status in peoples minds and not a trend (heck, even WDSP is getting it`s first AAs!) - though a few `must see` additions could have taken it to D Ticket dark ride status.

Dumbed down? Yes, to a degree. Any cultural influences or improvements? No. Though certain favourites have gone (the opening tunnel mist effects for example) but I`m happily surprised how much is intact - the skyscaper UV vistas, the fireworks, the aforementioned divers, the beach and boat; albeit as Steve said with new footage superimposed, but the general feel of El Rio is still there. And a version of El Rios chorus audio plays in the background (not too apparent on this particular video but I`m sure others will surface.)

At the end of the day it stopped a good but old attraction becoming a laughing stock (some would say it already had), may generate more foot traffic through that queue, and if so bodes well for the rumour of Rhine River. And of course it`s a better route to take by far than simply closing the attraction and having dead space.

Long live If You Had Wings :D

Sorry, this is long...

Honestly, while the ride looks OK, it just confirms what my family (and a lot of the rest of the world) has been saying for a long time about Americans...that we are so xenophobic that we have no desire to learn about any other country than our own. In order to get anyone to ride the ride they had to cheese it up with Disney. How this is supposed to help Mexican tourism I'll never know (and that was the original intent of the ride after all).

My family may be one of the few families who go to Epcot to experience a little bit about other cultures. In fact we spend 4X more time in Epcot than we do any of the other parks combined. We're skipping WDW next year and going to TDL/DS in 2009. Members of my family speak Spanish, French, some Italian, Japanese, and a little Mandarin Chinese.

It's interestng to watch the rudeness from certain groups towards the visitors who work in the World Showcase when they are at Epcot. The top 2 rude groups are: the South American tour groups, and ...shock, Americans. For example, spend a little time in Mitsokoshi in the morning and go back in the evening and see how the merchandise has been thown all over since opening and generally treated with total disrepect. Don't like that $300 kimono that you had no intention of buying anyway? Just throw it in a heap on the floor. We actually saw one man (who had a suspiciously Southern accent) walk around China and Japana and yell at the top of his lungs "Why to these (foul wors for Japanese and Chinese) dress like Americans, they're in AMERICA!" Ummm I thought that the whole point of the World Showcase was to expose Americans to different cultures, including how they traditionally dressed. I've also seen people go into Morocco and refer to the employees there as "terrorists". Although why this surprises me I don't know.. I am light skinned so many people actually think that I'm Asian and I have parents and students behave in racist ways towards me and I live in and was born in NJ.

Epcot is becoming Disney Movieland. How much longer before the China Pavillion gets Mulan transposed over their movie or Canada or the American Adventure had Pocahontas full time? BTW, as a 1/2 Native American I find Pocahontas not only historically inaccurate but also on the offensive side.

I'll miss the old El Rio.

My dad had a lengthy conversation with one of the CM's who works in the pavilion, and she said that the new ride is actually less stereotypical than the original. The old Rio was slightly offensive to the Mexican culture, and she found this new version to be much better. So it's not quite as "dumbed down" as one would think.

With all the time that the attraction was down and that's all they did with it?

:(

I'm sorry as boring and uninspiring the old ride was....I can say that they actually made it worse. At least the old ride with the Mayan parts in the beginning was somewhat educational. Now it's just plain stupid and pointless. Where is the story? What is the story? I know what it's supposed to be based on all the rumors...but if you didn't read that would you know?

Thanks for the video...but this attraction is bad.

The video cuts away before you see the end of the opening animation. Panchito and Jose come on stage, but when it's Donald's turn, he's a no-show. They call on the magic serape (just like the movie) and set out to find him.

From there the videos are of them scouring Mexico for him and him getting into trouble. In the "small world" style scene you're floating through a city as it celebrates - more Mexican culture - and then the next tunnel is more of the the stuff you saw in the first but with one important scene. The magic serape flies into the most prominent image at the end, the palm trees on a sunset beach. It's telling you it's getting late in the day.

Next scene, they find Donald at a party, and have to drag him away to the concert. Up next, the concert.

How hard to follow is that?

You start out explaining that the scene that sets it up and explains it is not there....after that it's just a bunch of scenes with the characters flying into and out of them. Without the set up, it's just a bunch of scenes and if you don't know the story it probably doesn't make a lot of sense. And I'll give you after watching it a second time I can grasp the story a bit better.

I'll admit this ride is less stereotypical and less potentially offensive but like most things....if you're basing what you're showing to offend the least amount of people...you tend not to please anyone.

I don't like what they did with the attraction...I just don't. They could have done so much better with the time they had and they dropped the ball.

My wife just watched it....while visually appealing and thinking that kids will like it because of the characters (though we both agree...how many kids know who the other two characters are), we are both disappointed that this was the end result of the extended downtime. Disney could have done so much better and didn't.

That scene is definetely there and you can hear it on the video. However, because of the sheer number of screens showing things, as was the case with El Rio, the videographer decided to turn his/her camera to the next screen before the first one finished. The boat has not passed the screen that sets up the story so everyone in the boat saw it even though it is not on video, which is why videos are not always the best thing to judge an attraction off of. Either way, I think the story is very simple to follow, even if you don't pay attention to the first screen.

Its ok to not like the ride, very little can appeal to everyone. I never really liked El Rio. I love Donald and will likely ride this more often than before, but it will still likely be a ride I do just every once and a while. Without completing gutting the ride and making the scenes bigger to accomodate more than just screens as before, there is little in my mind they could have done other than adding some cab AAs at the end to make me ride it more....

I, for one, like what I saw on the video. They added just enough to spruce it up and make it more kid-friendly (which is what they've been doing to Epcot, MGM and AK in the past few years) but still kept the charm of the old attraction. They have figured out a way to update it without ruining the charm of a classic and upsetting people. I think it's gonna get good reviews overall.

I saw the whole video today (because it wasn't working 3/4 into the film yesterday) and here are my thoughts:

1. The only time I ever went on El Rio was years ago and all I remember was fireworks at the end and skeletons playing trumpets and thinking "what the hell is this? why are people doing (insert ride scene)?". I didn't learn anything about Mexican culture and I was bored and thinking "Why did we do this" (although I was 7 at the time). I never went on it again based on a disappointing first trip. (meanwhile I always wanted to go on Maelstrom).

2.The ride is a HUGE improvement. I Know there are allot of Disney fans who are disappointed (o.k. the song was really catchy) but if I wanted someone yelling at me to buy hats I'd go to a flea market. The animation is really great and reminiscent of the 1944 film itself (which did educate people about Mexican culture) and it's nice to see 2D/ live action combo being done by Disney once again.

3. While the ride works I would have changed some things. the finale is sorta anti-climatic, the animation is good but it would have been better to copy there scene from the Mickey Mouse Revue (which is quite entertaining especially in Japanese). I don't think it would have been to hard but maybe the robots wouldn't have worked well comparing to the 2D animation. (robots will never look as fluid as cartoons) I also would have put "Small World" type figures of Panchito and Jose in the "Day of the Dead" scene (if it's still called that) and also have changed some of the dialog to "Have you scene Donald in (insert Mexican location)" or "Have you scene Donald near (insert Mexican landmark)" to make it a bit more educational.

Overall the ride is better (and if they really did keep the song than it's AWESOME!) and something that I would actually want to go see (but not wait more than 20 min). As a C ticket it's a welcome addition to World Showcase.

(and to those wondering if kids will know who the other birds are, the DVDs for Saludos Amigos and the Three Caballeros have gone out of print, meaning a better and more advertised edition will probably be coming later)

One thing I will add is the original told an awful lot about Mexicos culture, history and beliefs through most of the projections - though I had to research their meanings. Comets? Fire? Costumes? All makes sense when you know. The new version obviously takes a very different route. Nothing too brain-taxing now, which is a dissapointment.

Absolutely no one understood the original and how the ancient culture scene was linked to colonial mexico (the small world scene).
