Cool little place especially with little ones...
Have they really thought this Avatar thing through??

With no show in the show part and no FotLK, there really isn't anything left. They've effectively shut down an entire land...and one I liked much more than another land which shall remain nameless (but rhymes with Rhinoland.)

If they aren't moving forward on this Avatar deal (which would be FINE with me!), I hope they do something in there.

So much of Disney is being cut or shut down, but a whole section of a park? Just seems wrong.

So long, Camp Minnie Mickey!

Will definitely miss CMM and glad our daughter was young enough to have gone to the Pocahontas show. It really had a different feel than the rest of DAK, and that is not a bad thing. However, it was a bit "off" and not quite the land it was supposed to be when they thought of it.

Trying to think...has an entire land ever just completely been "out of service" before?

Have they ever shut down a whole section of a park?

I think from a numbers point of view they feel they have thought it through and are projecting the Avatar sequels to do almost as well as the original. My problem with this is that Disney as a company to me has always had a "feel" to the way they do things. Walt's original idea of having rides that everyone could ride together probably didn't make sense in the way of numbers but it had that "feel" of being right which is why Disney is a special experience. I'm sure the numbers work on Avatar Land but I'm not convinced it "feels" right and I have a feeling many guests might feel that way and avoid it.

I think I'll miss FoTLK most since it will be shut down until at least the summer of 2014.

Hefty makeovers taking a large part down.... Tomorrowland early 94 springs to mind. But there again it was hardly a land. A pathway leading to a theatre, a few meet n greets, a closed makeshift ampitheatre and some toilets.

The Epcot Manifesto
Lets just say this early in the thread, before it derails into another Avatar conversation.
IF they make an amazingly themed land, with great rides and things to do, Avatarland will be a success, regardless of what people think of the film franchise.
IF they decide to rest on the "popularity" of the films and half- the land, it will be a failure.

Bye Camp Minnie Mickey, I don't honestly think I ever set foot in you, but maybe I took a wrong turn once! :p

I just don't see why people are so up in arms that it's Avatar. Upset about losing a (to some) well liked land, sure. But what if Disney announced that they were clearing CMM to build a Beastly Kingdom that features a boat ride, walk through, and hybrid IMAX/coaster E-ticket.... I think people need to not judge the new land until we all see the final product. Especially not judge based on a name. Just my $.02. Let the flaming begin.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Avatar Land is the direct result of the Tolkien estate (very much anti-Peter Jackson) telling Disney where they could shove the theme park rights.

Remember, 2010 saw the first rumors of Disney and Universal both trying to acquire Middle-Earth. The rumors went nowhere, of course....and then Avatar was officially announced in 2011, and Harry Potter Diagon Alley Expansion was announced in 2012.

Which is a huge shame. Smaug is a much more compelling character than Nefertiti the Cat Lady.

But POTTER! something something...Universal is great, Disney sucks.

I don't think I've ever even been to CMM...and if they pull off Avatar to the degree the concept art shows...wow...might be the most incredible Disney "land" to experience anywhere.

If you look through some of the other threads here you will find hundreds of posts debating every pro and con of adding Avatar.

Because Avatar was a bloody stupid, overly simplistic movie with unlikeable characters. See: Red Letter Media. (language warning)
