Going Solo: Save Money or Splurge?

Well, since I am a moderate kind of gal, I'm currently booked at CBR in a king room.

To make a long story short, I'm waffling. If I move down to a value, I can easily save myself $500 ... which means, of course, more shopping

So, I guess I'm asking what would YOU do? Would you keep the money in your pocket, or splurge on your resort?

BONUS QUESTION: If you choose the value, which one? (Personally, I like the theming of Pop and the requested lakeview, but the new rooms at ASMu look great too ... more waffling!)

If I were going solo, I would just stay at my friends' house (10 mi. from WDW). If they didn't live there and I was still going, I would go to Pop (since I've never stayed there) and save the money.

I think I would go with the more expensive resort if it's not somewhere you think you would stay with family. I haven't stayed at Pop and last time I was at Music was before renovations so I would say go where you think you would be happiest.

Going solo for me always means I don't need much room. So I always stayed at either Pop or an AS resort. I've also stayed at the Grosvenor in the DTD district and loved it. That way you are right next to DTD and you can spend that extra $500 when you get back from the parks because it's open until midnight.

I am the opposite of most people I guess as I would totally splurge on the resort!!!! If it made the difference between going and not going, that is a different conversation. But if you are going and can afford the Mods, I say treat yourself well!!!! Belle

I haven't stayed at a mod. resort so I can't comment there but I have stayed at the All Stars Music (this past June). I thought it was just fine. The room was recently renovated and was quite comfortable. We were located in one of the jazz buildings and found it to be very quiet (and we'd return in the middle of the day for a nap). I guess it depends on what you plan on using your resort for. We just used it to sleep and shower and spent most of our time at the parks. We even only ate at our resort once the whole time we were there. I liked ASMu enough that I plan on returning there the next time we travel. Personally I'd save the money and spend it on shopping:sohappy: but that's my opinion!

I'm going solo again next month (30 days!) and staying @ POP. I'd rather spend the extra $$ on shopping or shows - I'm going to Cirque - than my room. I'm only going to sleep there, right?

What will give you the most pleasure and leave you with the best memories?

It's a personal choice- when I go solo, I always stay at Pop, because I don't spend much time at the resort. I'd rather spend the extra money on shopping and other things during the trip.

wannabeBelle: What would you recommend for a female solo? I would love to stay in a deluxe for once, or a resort that even feels deluxe! A balcony would be nice, too. I am very close to changing my booking to CR. Since I am using my travel rewards for air and MYW Hoppers, all I need to pay for is the room (with AAA discount) and my food & fun money!

DS12 and I were in CR with MK view in June! It was great! I would highly recommend doing it once, if only to say you did!

As for recommendations for a 'female solo'... :lookaroun

MontyMon: Thanks! Trust you to make me laugh while I'm here stressing and reading everything on the CR that I can find. Is the MK view really worth it? Could you sleep at night? Are the rooms such that if I wanted to come back for a mid-day break, I could, and not feel trapped in a hotel room?

I remember going through the CR on the monorail at least 25 years ago and wanting to stay there. Always said, one day. On day has never come: DS came along, and it was more airfare, more tickets, more $ period. The the divorce, and back to school, so money was a bit tight. But then I think, this is my GRAD trip. I should splurge and celebrate the tough time, and the more happier ones to come.

But if I do stay at CR, I will have to tell a little white lie to my family and say I got upgraded or something because Pop or CBR was full ... :ROFLOL:

How safe dp you feel travelling solo? Never done it myself.

In Disney? As safe I can be. This will be my first time solo: I looked into doing a cruise, going to Mexico/Cuba/DR all-inclusive, but with having to pay double occupancy, it just wasn't worth it. Plus, I reasoned, what would I do there? Lie on a beach all day? Since I've been to WDW so many times, I am much more comfortable there than any other vacation destination. There is much more to do, see, hear, taste and smell. And like anywhere, you take the same precautions, but IMHO it's safer to me than anywhere else solo.

I'd stay at a value and keep the extra cash for shopping and things. I've only ever stayed at All Star Sports and it was comfortable and clean, which is all I can really ask for.

I would stay at the POP. I really think the nicer places are for sharing with my family, and the rooms at CBR or the other moderates are not all that much better than the values. You really see a big room difference at the deluxes. The POP is a lot of fun!

Plus the extra money will let you get some great souvenirs to remind you of your wonderful vacation.

Personally, I would downgrade to POP. You'll save extra money, plus--it will be a nice experience to try out a resort that you never been before. Personally, I would rather spend more money on myself on gifts and food, then to spend on a room that I would be rarely in.

It depends on when I go and for how long. With an AP I go 3-5 times a year. So for short 2-3 day trips, it's usually POP or sometimes POFQ if I'm feeling a bit more splurgy. For longer trips, the splurge options of WL or AKL come into play if I'm really wanting to treat myself (1-2 times a year), otherwise it'd be POFQ (I love the water-views there). I have even semi-splurged with 4 nights at POP followed by 1 night in an MK view room at CR (11th floor)

I found it wonderful being able to watch Wishes from my balcony at CR. The room was very nice, very comfortable. There was some noise from the parking lot, but not so bad we couldn't sleep [no noise at all from within the hotel or from the construction where the north wing was]. "Worth it" is really a subjective thing, to me it definitely was worth it... To you? Only you can say.

DS and I have been going now since 2001, the first few trips I paid for my Ex to join us because he was young enough it was important to me that he spend time with her 'as a family'. Now we go 'just us boys' and have a great time. We're gradually trying to hit each resort, just to experience them. So far we've been to ASMu, ASMo, POFQ, DAKL and Contemporary, with one off-site stay in Davenport [the ex-In-Laws invited us to stay at the house they were snow-birding in]. We're headed to Pop in a week and then Poly in February. Who knows where we'll end up in '09?!?!? :D

Of all of them, I think DAKL was best overall, but each resort has its own charm... I don't think you can go wrong.

And I was serious about my 'solo female' recommendation! :animwink:
