Flying with an Atlanta layover

So an Atlanta layover just got added to my awesome 2hr and 40min non-stop flight from Hartford to Orlando. The layover is only 45 mins but the flight time from Hartford to Atlanta is 2 and 1/2 hours and then it's another hour and 1/2 from Atlanta to Orlando is 1 and 1/2 hours. I know wind currents and what not play a part in flight time but this seems excessive. Anyone ever fly through Atlanta? Is this right?!

Yes. That seems about right. We layover in Atlanta every time and that seems about right. You have to figure in the time it takes to line up with the airport then the runway. Then the time it takes to taxi in and then to take back off again. You're easily adding that extra time on for all of that mess. :(

45 mins in Atlanta is cutting it close - it's a huge airport! We don't ever want less than 1 hr there to make connections. Make sure you have the essentials with you, and a change of clothes, in case you or your bags don't make it. Good luck.

That layover is pretty standard for Atlanta. I've flown through there 3 times and all 3 times my layover was at least 2 hours. And not to scare you but you'll probably need that amount of time or close to it to get from one gate to the other, unless you get really lucky! ;)

Ugh. Now I'm scared. I booked a non-stop flight because I HATE layovers. There are several airports to choose from around here. They just sent me a nonchalant e-mail like it was no big deal.

I know what you mean. Be careful about your time in between flights. We almost missed our flight last year. When we got to the gate at the complete other side of the airport, it was boarding. Talk about a close call.

The flight is fully booked. They can't leave without a plane full of people....Can they?

We (4 of us) and another 3 passengers were once left behind on a flight - on a 21 passenger puddle jumper to the Bahamas - after we were required to get off for fueling in Miami. Only the passengers who stayed by the door and noticed the plane taxiing away, so asked someone what was going on, knew that it had changed gates and we had to reboard elsewhere.

The waiting area was jammed with lots of people yelling and screaming so when we finally heard our page, and fought our way to a counter, the flight had left. The next available flight was 8 hours later.

BTW, our carry-ons were still at our seats, so they knew we were missing.

So yes, they can and will leave without you if you are delayed. Flying is a whole different ballgame these days. Not everyone on your flight from Atlanta to Orlando will have such a short window.

So good luck, and be sure you study your airport map so you know exactly where your next flight will be. Let the flight attendant know that you have a close connection - sometimes they will ask passengers who have more time between flights to wait so you can get off first.

I have had several 35 minute layovers there and have been just fine. Just know ahead of time what terminal you need and make sure you get off the tram at the right one. If you're worried about it then call the airline and make them reschedule you to a longer layover.

Cant you call the airline and ask them if they can switch your flight as you booked "X" and now THEY have changed it and the chnage does work for you and your plans??? What airline is it. I know with JetBlue they always change the depart and arrival times and they always say if this does not work please call and they will see what they can do. I sure cant hurt to try. I would take a calm and cool tone with them and see what they can do for you.

Just explain to them that you feel like 45 minutes is not enough time to get from one gate to another in Hartfield and they ought to change it for you. The airlines will work with you if they have made a change that proves difficult for you to get to your connecting flight. :) But even if they don't then do not worry that much. You'll be fine. You don't have to get your checked bags or anything. All you have to do is exit the plane, go to the tram, take the tram to your next gate hall/location and then walk to your gate. Like I said before, we have had several 35 minute layovers at Atlanta and we have never missed a flight. We even had enough time to stop by the restrooms. :)

WOW... Did you have to run for your life to do that?! LOL

Nope. Don't even have to walk fast. :) Every time we fly through there and end up with a God awful 90 minute layover (I hate those!) we always get from one gate to the other with no problems and have to sit there for close to 70 minutes. :( I'll take a 35 minute layover anytime!

I use to fly delta out of Newark and I will no longer do so. After 3 missed connecting flights and 1 time having to spend the night in the airport I am done with them. Hopefully you wont have any delays and will get there on time.

I called and told them I'm concerned. They told me since the original flight is full everyone is just switching planes at the same gate, but they didn't explain why we we're switching planes. Seems weird to me.

We just flew through Atlanta two weeks ago on the way to Orlando and we had a 40 minute layover. We made it with plenty of time to spare and even used the bathroom and went into a store.

Your probably also flying out of an airport that actually has flights leave on time.
