Flying Saucers

I have been thinking about this suggestion for a while. But with WDI bringing the flying saucers back to life at Disney's California Adventure (with a new theme) why not have WDW bring them back - with the original flying saucer theme? This would be a great addition to Tomorrowland. A fun new ridethat isn't toon based. If the old Skyway station and all the adjacent buildings were demolished there would be plenty of room for the Flying Saucers between the Carousel of Progress and Space Mountain entrance. New restrooms to replace the ones current behind the Skyway station could be added back where the Galaxy Palace Theater used to be.

It was thought about in 1990 as part of 1994s New Tomorrowland, to replace the CoP. Thankfully it didn`t happen. With the permenant Stitch Dance Party area that open space you mentioned is reduced now - and remember the berm is there too!

The original flying saucers were notorious for breaking down; the new version has improved on the design. I wouldn`t be surprised if plans for Orlando appeared again in a few years.

Now we know what they could add to the Galaxy Palace Theatre/Parking Lot area in a few years... :hammer:

Hopefully not in CoP's place though...

I would be very happy to see the flying saucers replace the Laugh Floor. But is this new "2012 version" of the flying saucers really designed to be indoors? If so, the round theater could lend itself to a move that is projected onto the sides of the theater to give the feel of taking flight, like you are flying out of the building and into space. My only real concern if it went into the Laugh Floor building would be the capacity issues and retrofitting this ride into an existing building.

I never understood the appeal of the flying saucers. In a nut shell, they're just bumper cars. Big deal.

While essentially they were bumper cars, I think the "coolness" factor was the fact that you were in a (motorless) hovercraft gliding across the floor rather than driving around in a bumper car. (Though hopefully with modern computer-aided design they could figure out a way to lessen the tendency for the saucers to "bounce" rather than glide...)

And for those who aren't up on their Disneyland history, here's a couple YouTube videos:

And while we're at it, for some reason I just find this re-dubbed version of the second video utterly hilarious...

C and D tickets should never be replaced with B tickets, regardless of disliked content or supposed improper placement of the replacee and the supposed proper placement of the replacer. That's just lunacy.

..... Why couldn't they demolish the Tomorrowland Speedway and put the flying saucers there??

It makes some sense to me to replace one drive-it-yourself ride with another more futuristic drive-it-yourself ride...

Same reason you don't demolish the Jungle Cruise and put in "The Junior Jungle Truck Spin," or demolish Living with the Land to put in "The Carrot Hopper," or demolish Muppetvision to put in "Gonzo's Spin and Whirl."

Those attractions aren't in the same league as Speedway... Speedway could go tomorrow and no one would miss it...
