First Look: Gringott's AAs

Seems to me that Universal can't win in the fan's eyes just the same as Disney. There have been several people on these boards complaining that Universal "uses too many screens!!!". Now they went above and beyond to not only add AA's to the attraction but the queue as well, meanwhile what do the fans on the board have to say? "Eh, well they're not moving all that much, why aren't they A100's like S.I.R.!!??" Seriously? I'm just grateful we have a theme park that isn't focused on plastic wristbands, timeshare villas, etc. and are actually building "attractions" for us guests to enjoy. On top of that, we're getting these new attractions in a reasonable time-frame. 7 Dwarfs and Avatarland anyone?

seem okay
yeah, the heads look weird compared to the movie, maybe it's the camera angles or something?

and would somebody please explain what "compliance" means in AA jargon?

I'm not seeing people complaining about the lack of movement. The comments are more on the quality of the movement. The figures, as shown in the video, lack a natural fluidity. It is a valid critique, especially since slow, simple movements are easier to achieve.

It'll be interesting to see what they do when these things break down, being in the middle of a queue and all.

For those commenting on the movement, how do you know their programming is even finished? They still have plenty of time to tinker.

Doesn't matter if programming is finished because their business is about showmanship. They could have done a "behind the scenes" video instead.

That may be true, but I'm not going to be riding a sneak peek internet video. I only care what it looks like when I'm actually there.

Universal has never done an AA with compliance that I have seen, so I don't expect to see them significantly improve between now and opening.

Yeah, because Disney ALWAYS worries what the state of their show is, just ask the Yeti, or Hopper, or the Angler-fish, or half the cast of PotC...oh, wait. You make it sound like once guests see these AA's that they will become so disgusted with them that they'll turn around and run for the hills. It's Harry Potter, guests will flock to it no matter what it is. I thought they looked fine, especially the goblin talking in the second video. Besides, it's not the queue that matters, it's the overall attraction.

It describes the reproduction of the non-precise movements humans actually make. When you move your arm from your side outwards... you actually overshoot your final position slightly and pull back to the final position. Your body moves with this natural inertia that leads to 'softer' stops when you move. A motor controlled AA would normally move directly to the desired position and stop. Humans pick up on this precision as artificial as your mind is used to seeing the little inaccuracies people actually move with. Additionally the inertia of the figure's weight when it moved fast and tried to stop was hard to combat the figure shaking from the abrupt changes. So speeds would be reduced to avoid that. Compliance includes greater speed control and the slight overshoot helps minimize the abrupt stops.. allowing for higher speed movements.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Are they Disney-quality? Well, in regards to skins and clothing, yes, but I don't think so in terms of animation.
It'd be nice if they were, but I definitely think they will serve their purpose well.

And if it means that these function more regularly than Disney's... why bother with compliance?

When it comes to motion, not all "Disney-quality" animatronics are created equal.

Aside from their movements, the only thing that bothers me about them is their skin texture. I didn't notice it in the videos but after looking at some photos I want to say they look almost "waxy." They still look great though.

God what happened to Al Roker? Sooo skinny, and he looks unwell...

But the AAs look decent. Can't wait for the new Harry Potter goodies - and my hotel room at Cabana Bay!
