Now you can see the original 1971-1993 Tony Baxter/Claude Coats masterpiece in all it's glory. Does ANYONE think the Mine Train will be better than this freak show?

The DW and I were never fans of this ride, but could never really articulate why. This video finally let me sort out what really bothered me. It looks to me like it never had any real animatronics. For instance, the witch appears multiple times, but in all her incarnations her head, arm, etc never move. The entire figure is either spun on a turntable or moved forward on a track. To me the result was giving the figure all the authenticity of a mannequin in a department store. For those of you that love this ride, I apologize sincerely. I really can see why you liked it, but for me, it just didn't work.

My reaction seeing this as an adult is pretty much the same I had when I was a kid. ?!?

I think absence makes the heart grow fonder for some people. And others just love carnie-style scary dark rides. But I am amazed this thing lasted as long as it did at MK.

When I was writing the page for my site about this ride I went back and watched a ton of videos of the original. I knew I had ridden it pre-change but for the life of me couldn't remember the original. There really were quite a few changes when you think about it. The one that still grabs me to this day is how the witch used to be really successful when she attempted to push the bolder/gem over onto you. Kind of reminds me of how you ended up in Hell on Mr. Toad. LOL!

Wow. I LOVE that. I wish we still had it. I can't believe there was a ride based on the villain. Oh, and how creepy was it going through the cottage with it being all dark and the witch screaming??

I remember this from my youth and the real surprise was how scary it was. I distinctly remember being terrorized at age six by this thing, when the Haunted Mansion didn't bother me at all. But it's odd to say it's amazing it lasted as long as it did just because it was based on a traditional carnival-type ride. That description applied also to Dumbo, Mr. Toad, and the carousel.

The newer Snow White version was less thematically coherent but at least it wasn't just one nightmarish image after another, so on points I think it was the better one. Either version is preferable to another meet-and-greet in my opinion. It's odd that Snow White can apparently only rate a single attraction at a time, while Nemo sustains three.

Liked the newer version a little better but did you see the wait hardly anyone in line

I doubt one random video shot on one day at one specific time is good evidence of a ride's popularity. Many rides at MK can have walk-on waits at certain point of the year/time of day. I'm guessing there's a reason Disney added an extra row of seats to each car as part of the 1994 refurb (they did the same with Mr. Toad too).

I'll also point out that some details in the ride are not so visible in the video, they include:

- Queen looking from window above the cars as you go inside (copied for Disneyland)
- moving spider in dungeon
- blinking eyes in dungeon
- "eye mobile" in forest
- "ghost" shadow in cottage

This version also exists in some form at TDL, which is a neat hybird of WDW '71 and DL '83, with added detail:

The original scared the crap out of me as a kid. I remember going to MK in the 80's and absolutely loved the Haunted Mansion, but would have nightmares from the Snow White ride.
I think it was a fun ride, but the changes they made to the ride made it a lot better. It's just too bad that its being replaced with a meet n greet.

Thank you fot the post. As a kid in 1975 (kindergarten) I remember being scared to death when my older sisters made me go on! Then when I moved to FL and went down, the ride seemed hmmm "different". I asked myself why was I so scared! Now I know I wasn't crazy! Thanks!

I totally agree! How I wanted to scare the crap out of my kids! LOL
