We're already in 2025. I'm starting to convince myself they'll never refurb the 2002 ride in my lifetime. We're 5 years away from 2030, and thinking about riding the 2002 Imagination in the 2030s would blow my mind. Riding the Eric Idle Figment in like 2033 with my Zak and Wheezie plush as a 31 year old grown man would be a surreal experience.

I wanted Casey from Pokemon to return and reunite with Ash. Didn't happen. I wanted Figment to return to it's former glory. Didn't happen. And yet, all the bad things seem to happen.

At this point all I can say is...

SONY PLZ REBOOT DRAGON TALEZ (didn't happen)

There was a comedian once that said something to the effect of 'If you have to rely on fart jokes to make them laugh, you're not a good comedian". This ride sucks. It's beyond dated. WDI doesn't care. It's 95% walk on. They don't care. It's had a tattered sign hanging out front for 15 years (even if the sign was part of the 'whimsy' originally, it doesn't work any more). They don't care. They just, don't, care.

Then they go and build a Moana water walk thru attraction (shoehorned into an edutainment park) for more money than would've cost to do a decent refurb on Figment. Again, they don't care about this IP anymore.

This ignores the fact that they are 1. Making a movie 2.keep making merchandise and 3. theme an entire building after him 2 months out of the year

Picture of a Figment/Dreamfinder fan in depression after having waited 33 years for a new ride, 2035 colorized

I find it hilariously ironic that Dragon Tales premiered the year after the original JII was closed (and a month before the 1999 Figment-less version opened).

Therefore, Emmy, Max, Cassie, Ord, Zak and Wheezie never got to ride the pre-1998 Figment. However, The Magic School Bus and Arthur, the other two 90s PBS cartoons, premiered in 1994 and 1996, meaning that Ms. Frizzle (+ her students), Arthur and his friends could all have ridden the original Journey Into Imagination.

Disney management currently views it as “why fix what isn’t broken?”
Figment moves a ton of merch. Why should they mess with that? The answer is inevitably going to be Lightning Lane. Once someone convinces management that an updated attraction could sell more LL, then it may get an update.

I know i'm starting to go into insane ramblings. Truth is, I really am going insane, because like, why? Is it because they can't find an IP to put in there?

Hot take: I wouldn't mind an Inside Out Figment ride. If it was good, and it captured the spirit of the original ride at least significantly (like, better than the current Figment), I would absolutely be happy. Also bring back Dreamfinder.

Another hilarious ironic fact: in August 2010, Kodak stopped sponsoring Figment. On August 31, 2010 Dragon Tales stopped airing on PBS. And even more ironic, right after Dragon Tales effectively got killed off, in 2011 they added a "create your own Figment" activity where you can basically make your own Dragon Tales Figment OC. It's just hilarious to me.

The trouble I have with this logic is it’s the very same one that got us the ride we have there now. Because they had a 4D film themed to a film IP at the time in the Magic Eye Theater, Honey I Shrunk the Audience. They stupidly decided, oh yeah, those really popular & profitable characters we have in an equally popular/beloved attraction. We don’t need any of that anymore. Scrap it and make the ‘ride’ an extension of Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Then, when that immediately backfired/failed miserably. Their fix was, oh, then just shoehorn the Figment character into the poorly received Honey I Shrunk ride (ya know, a property Figment has ‘nothing’ to do with..), that fixes everything. (Yeeah.. right).
I’ve made the comparison somewhat before, but it’s the equivalent of deciding all the sudden to retheme Haunted Mansion to a genuinely bad Winnie the Pooh ride inside.. and then, when people complain to bring the Haunted Mansion and its Ghostly residents back, they decide instead… “Nah, just put the ghosts back in and their song and just have them haunt Pooh & Friends in the 100 Acre Wood in each scene. That fixes everything”… like.. what??
Pretty clear to me that isn’t a permanent good fix, let alone a genuine good replacement for an iconic/classic ride.

Another analogy to make for you specifically is like.. imagine you replace a really good say.. animatronic Dragon Tales show someplace w I dunno.. a really cheap/lousy CocoMelon show. People complain like, what the heck? This totally sucks in comparison to the really good Dragon Tales show that was here initially.. so what do they do to “fix” the problem. Hey, why not shoehorn Ord, Zak & Wheezie, and Cassie in there, to sing along to the CocoMelon songs and ‘their’ characters.. but still call it like “Dragon Tales: Singing Springs Jamboree” w little to none of the familiar Dragon Tunes, side characters, settings, etc. and it’s like.. wait, what?! Seriously?? That makes no sense, this is stupid. That’s basically what this is for a large majority of Journey Into Imagination/Dreamfinder & Figment fans. We shouldn’t have to compromise period. We deserve our darkride. Magic Eye Theatre has had its varying films/attractions before, but they never came at the expense of a perfectly endearing, classic ride until they decided randomly at some point to change the guest flow/queue ropes and signage to get attendance numbers down intentionally to “prove” Journey Into Imagination “needed to be changed”. . Nobody would’ve minded slight enhancements here & there. Done to the tech, Lighting effects, new projection mapping, etc. Just as long as it didn’t drastically affect the ride’s story, characters, and theme at hand.

And what makes this even more annoying is like.. again.. every year, new Figment merch. Sells consistently well, every year. And with it comes all the fans “Please, bring this character & his ride back to its former glory” and it ‘never’ happens.
No, we’re not asking to have a needless unrelated IP crossover all over again like we’ve had ‘twice’ now that have failed miserably. We want what worked to begin with, tastefully enhanced w new tech & spfx. (Ala the type of stuff we’ve seen in enhancing other classic attractions over the years, minus any blatant & unneccesary unrelated IP shoehorns/rethemes.. (looking at you Country Bear Musical Jamboree. Tech enhancements to the AAs are great, glad the bears are still there.. but again.. why shoehorn stuff in there that doesn’t belong, that I can ‘already find elsewhere’ in the same resort through other offerings. I want more variety of things to see & do, not less & more of the same.). But yeah.. just.. look, the stuff sells, guests love it, and with a good ride can then get really good future works with the characters and such made through other mediums also. It’s a win-win for everybody. So I don’t get why management seems to weirdly hate these characters & the original iteration of the attraction so much if they make tons of money and spread tons of goodwill for the company? Heck, the bad Film IP-tie in changes to the ride weren’t even implemented under their leadership regime.. so, do they genuinely think it’d look bad on their end to finally go ahead and fix it, or what?? Wouldn’t it Infact get folks to look at them much more positively if they did? I just can’t understand..

And even with the whole “Oh, see, management won’t greenlight anything unless it has a successful film attached to it”. Yet.. the funny thing is.. w Haunted Mansion, they tried multiple times to make films off of it and they failed to make the same impact.. yet, ‘despite’ that, the attraction is still popular cause it’s essentially the same as it’s been since the 60s w only minor enhancements done to it, and the recent enhancements they greenlit also haven’t come at the expense of what the original attraction’s theme & story is, and again, the ride’s super popular. Makes tons of merch. Despite no film IP attached, So I don’t get why they have such cold feet about Journey Into Imagination. The original 83-98 ride is basically EPCOT’s Haunted Mansion when it comes to popularity and reputation of being a must-ride classic, that continues to please crowds to this day so it’s like.. cmon now. You guys in management honestly don’t get it?? You really don’t understand what the original 83-98 ride, theme & characters meant to people and how much goodwill they spread for the company & parks for years??

So uhm, uhh... That new Figment jacket and popcorn bucket are pretty cool huh? I know we all groan whenever they somehow milk a dragon but at least the merch is cool.
I'm actually really happy they brought back Figment for a meet-and-greet. Unfortunately, the Dreamfinder is in the background, and as we all know, Disney would rather capitalize on nostalgia by just giving us references rather than actually bringing back the Dreamfinder and redoing Figment.
