Fear of a Ride?

Two rides I almost chickened out of because of fear.

Summit Plummet - you can't see the slide when you are at the top. you just lay on your back and hope there is something there to catch you.

Sky Rush - opened last year at Hershey Park. If it wasn't for my 11 year old daughter egging me on I would have sneaked out the chicken exit. :)
I was actually afraid for all our lives. I literally thought my daughter was going to fly out of the coaster so it was my duty to sit next to her with my hand clamped down on her leg.

That is when you know a thrill ride is great-

ROC used to not bother me, but now no thanks! I'm good! Last time we rode it and came around the corner where the pictures are the guy had ours on all the screens! He said sometimes you get a real good one! Hahaha! My daughters face and her hair sticking straight up, and my expression was enough for him to give us a free ride! Did I mention at the end of that ride we got stuck and sat there for what seemed like forever! My mind went crazy with the what if's.....what if we got stuck upside down?......what if you got stuck sideways?.......if you wanted to you couldn't get out!! I'm normally not claustrophobic, but at that moment I sure was! Anyway the CM proceeded to take us back , cut the line and put us back on! That time wasn't as bad, but I haven’t ridden it since. So I understand your fears! Some rides are not for some people! I love TOT!! And not a soul in my family will ride it with me! Ride it by myself!

I was scared to do ToT until my ultra competitive FIL was there and made fun of me for not riding it. So I did. I'm glad I did it - but never again. I just hate hate hate that feeling in your stomach when you're falling.

I despise Splash Mountain because of that big drop. I rode it for my first time in 2007, and I didn't want to ride it again. I mean, you can't help but laugh after the drop, but I didn't like it. I HATE that dropping feeling! I feel exactly the same about ToT.

I also REALLY want to ride Rockin' Roller Coaster, but I'm too scared too. I don't want to be able to tell that I'm going upside down.

I'm a little too nervous to go on Expedition Everest. Are there any drops that gives you that weird stomach feeling? What does it feel like when you go backwards?

I know this isn't a fear, but I don't do some rides because I have issues with motion sickness.

Yes! I wouldn't ride Star Tours because of this and when they did the refurb I thought it would be better, so I tried it again. Nope. The 3D actually made it WORSE! I was doing some major mind tricks to keep myself from puking during that one. I don't have issues on many other rides, but this is one I'll skip!

Just think of the thousands upon thousands of people who have been on the ride prior to you and made it through unscathed.

ToT is one ride I won't ride! I don't like drops either. In fact, though I love roller coasters, I always get nervous waiting in line because of the drops. Now, the ones at Disney aren't so bad, because the drops aren't straight down, they curve or whatever. But I don't do free fall rides at all! I've riden ToT twice. Once one of the first times we went when it was open and the second time when we went with the show choir. I won't do it again, especially since it's not just one drop now. I always just wait in line with my family and then take the REAL elevator down to wait for them where you can see the pictures.

It was a long time before I got on TOT. I finally did because I didn't want to miss out while the rest of the family enjoyed. To me the drop doesn't bother me that much. It's hard to expalin, but it doesn't really feel like your dropping like you would a roller coaster or something like that. Maybe it's because you can't see. I was surprised by that. The actual build up is worse than the ride itself.

OK, I'll play... I have ridden Space Mountain in the past... several times. Two weeks ago when we went to the MK for just one day while on our cruise... Space Mountain wasn't gotten happen this trip anyway because of the kids and due to time there was stuff they would enjoy more. We did ride the People Mover and during the part it goes through Space Mountain I felt my throat tighten up and I was getting kinda worried about full blow wiggins at that point.

I felt the same about upside down for ages. When I was 9 I went on a silly fairground ride that I was slightly too short for, went upside down, got bumped around way more than I should have, and was ill for two days. It took me years to get over that, the reason I haven't ridden Space Mountain yet is because I used to think they all went upside down like the one in Paris.

It took until I was 14, and I was on holiday with my parents. It was the day I got to choose what we did so I picked a local theme park. They had this roller coaster that had a lot of upside down in it. And I just went "I can do this". I got in the line all by myself, rode it alone and came off laughing and so proud of myself. Since then I will ride almost anything.

A piece if advice: if you don't like the feeling of going upside down, just close your eyes as it happens. You kid your body into thinking you're the right way up.

You can't rationalize your way out of fear. You can summon up a little bravery and do the scary thing, anyway. You just suck it up and go.

There is no ride I'm afraid of. After doing the bouncy water slide at Blizzard Beach, I'm afraid of its big brother, Summit Plummet, and haven't done that. I may one day, but for now, I find it scary, so I just skip it.

I see no reason to ride something that scares me!! It's just not a big enough deal. The heck with it!

You could still go through the line, if you want to see all that, and exit just before the elevator loads. :)

I hate the feeling of falling and I equally hate roller coasters. However, I have been on everything Disney has to offer. For some reason I just feel more secure and can realize that it's just motion so I don't fear it. I've ridden ToT many times and RnRC only twice. The first time I rode RnRC I didn't even realize that it went upside down until after when the people I was with commented on it. The second time I was more aware, but it all happened so fast that you didn't really have time to think about it before it was done.

The first time I rode any of those coaster rides or drop rides I had to talk myself into it and even though I still don't like the drops or the coasters, I will ride them because I don't want to miss the rest of the experience. The scary parts are over so quickly, and you will have had a great experience.:D

I'm frantically working on just the right combination of potions to give you courage to ride.

Until then, watch the ride videos over and over and over again until you desensitize yourself to the drop.

Our oldest (9) is terrified of anything resembling a roller coaster or anything that drops. Not sure what caused this but, we've had 2 breakthroughs. 1)We coaxed him into riding Big Thunder Mountain and it's become his all time favorite ride at WDW. He gets so distracted looking at the theming that he pays no attention to the ride. 2)After watching a ride through video of Splash Mountain after the refurb, he looks at me and says, "Can I wear my poncho like the people in the video if I ride that?" I say, "Heck yeah!". Then he looks at me and says, "Oh...I'll ride it then." REALLY?! Maybe you just need to find your poncho.;)

So I'm terrified... petrified... of ToT. Like, I'm so frightened of dropping rides it's not even funny. Not funny at all. However, I genuinely want to ride and experience ToT because I love Rod Serling and the Twilight Zone and the queue and ride itself looks awesome. It's just the dropping feeling that chills me to the bone. So 1) any advice on how to get over this and just ride it? and 2) anyone else have any or know anyone that has a fear of a ride like this?

I can relate to this completely. I am a fellow chicken, and particular hater of drops. I never tried any coaster until I was 40 and then only because my kids were getting a tad older, and none of them wanted to hang with me while my hubby went on the Disney thrill rides, so I didn't want to be left alone. Over the course of several trips, I forced myself to try the rides that scared me. I started with BTMRR and Splash then moved onto Space and RnRC, and ultimately E:E. I surprised myself that I liked BTMRR, Space (a little) and RnRC (a lot). I didn't care for the drop in Splash but I could deal with those few seconds at the end of the ride. I hated E:E though because of all the ups and downs, but I'm glad I tried it once.

So the only attraction remaining for me to try was ToT, and I was terrified but wanted to at least experience it once. I decided to finally try it this past December. I told myself that nothing bad was going to happen to me even if I hated it, and it would be over quickly. I'll tell you the truth - I did not enjoy it. But I'm glad I tried it. One thing that I was completely unprepared for was the lifts after the drops. I expected my stomach to lurch during the drops, but I did not expect to be thrown back up again with such force that it was almost scarier to me than the drops. So perhaps if you are prepared for that, it won't be as bad. Again, bottom line is that if you really want to try it, then do. I doubt you'll regret it even if you never want to ride it again.

My mom is scared of Soarin'. It's mostly because there is nothing under her feet and she's up in the air and she can see the ground below. I told her to just look ahead at the screen, but she got on and just before the ride started, she chickened out. It's everything she loves - it's California, the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc. But she won't.
I was scared of Haunted Mansion for many, many years, even as an adult. The room is what gets me. A room full of people, it's an obvious elevator and it goes pitch black for a minute or two. My worst nightmare.

Best advice is to DO IT!! It's a ride, that's all. It's over in less than a minute. You can handle it. If you don't like it, don't go on it again.
