Fantasmic Reopening Watch

Just watched it, and I kind of get the feeling a lot of people here are simply starved for Fantasmic! It's an amazing show. It still is an amazing show. It felt great watching it! However, the new segments are not jaw-dropping by any stretch of the "imagination."

With the understanding that Pocahontas also made no sense randomly plopped in the middle of the show, here are my opinions of the new segments.

New Pocahontas segment is nice, though I miss the canoes, and it seems like the live actress is only there for a second (though I guess that was true of the original version too).

Mulan segment seemed barren. Why not have at least three more pairs of fighters up there in the background? The Pocahontas segment had well over a dozen performers.

Aladdin segment is cool, especially because it still allows for some climbing/rope stunts. The "One Jump Ahead" reprise tag seemed a little random and out of place, but I guess that's not a major problem.

Frozen segment seemed out of place. It felt like the only reason it was put in there was to check off the "Frozen box" and elicit applause for Elsa's appearance. Which I guess is kind of the point of a show like this, but still, it just seemed more artificial than the other additions.

Moana sequence was okay. SOMEONE FINALLY WALKS ON WATER IN FANTASMIC! Additional effects like that are always welcome.

More Hunchback clips is always a win.

Overall, the show is not any worse and not much better. It's still great.

Now, let's get ourselves a Dragon in twenty years.

Disneyland’s is still stronger, even with the 2.0 changes.

But this definitely feels improved from DHS Fantasmic 1.0.
Based on how the much money I imagine they got for this redo, I bet there was a choice made for the sake of continuity to keep the more liked DHS 1.0 soundtrack as opposed to switching to the (for the most part) more disliked DL 2.0 version. They took away the main part that dragged on and was disliked and replaced it with something that although it doesn’t have the best flow, feels like it will please most people more than an excruciatingly long Pocahontas segment (and also flows better than some of the other shows of the past 18 months). Not perfect, but I believe it adds many elements well that were greatly needed for years before its closure.

I certainly agree.

I would just cut the bubble segment… and eventually swap all the fountains for something more modern.

Yeah, I was sort of hoping that maybe we’d get pink elephants on parade from DL 1.0. I did notice (watching the live stream) that the big line of fountains closest to the stage was now individually lit nozzles (looked like WOC grid fountains to me). I do wish some updates had been made to the others though.

Oh I think the bubble segment is great. One of the best mashups of Disney songs you could ask for! I sometimes find myself humming the music from the bubble section! Pink Elephants is obscure and weird, and Disneyland's is worse because of that segment in my opinion.
