I always find in room safe robbing a dubious claim, as most safes have a user codeable lock. Unless you are picking some stupid lock combination (like 1234) others cannot get in.

Or an inside job. There has to be a back door in case a: a guest forgets the combo that he set, or b: a guest checks out and doesn't leave the safe open. But aren't most Disney safes the key type? The last combo one I remember was at the GF 10 years ago. Or is it because most of my trips lately have been to the same resort? (OKW)

There's always another way into a hotel safe.

I had been to Disney at least 120 times in my life and never had anything stolen until last year. We arrived and went straight to Philharmagic (3 DD ages 8, and twin 3's). Parked the BRAND NEW Pooh strollers in front of Philharmagic and when we came out they had been replaced by the same strollers but these were completely used and filthy dirty!!!:fork:

I could not bring myself to let my kids sit in these strollers that is how disgusting these things were so we rented a double stroller for the rest of the day. We had ADR's at Concourse Steakhouse that night and wound up buying the $40 Disney black and red strollers in the gift shop as our new replacements. From that point on we tie the strollers together and then use a bike lock to lock them to a pole. I know it is crazy but I cant take a chance. None of the cast members seemed too concerned and they said that this is increasing every year and we would be surprised at the things that people steal right down to diapers and wipes that are left under strollers while they are parked in the "stroller parking" areas.

I have been lucky so far with nothing stolen thus far. I can't believe some of the things you have all had to deal with. I especially can't believe that people are taking strollers. I will remember this when I have children. I guess we can use eachothers stories as words of warning.

I had just purchased a new Nikon D2H and a range of lenses up to 600mm, a ring flash and some filters and a manforoto tripod, I had also purchased a brand new camera back pack to carry it in. When I got back to my room I discovered the room safe open and my wifes jewellery missing along with £5000 in sterling that I had brought to let the kids have as pocket money.

We were so shocked we went straight to reception to report the missing items, when we returned we found that the camera equipment had been stolen now too and the two Armani suites I had brought to wear at dinner had also gone along with a Coco Channel dress two pairs of Jimmy Choo shoes and a packet of Cheetos and my resort mug.

What was most disturbing is that my wifes brand new Victorias secret underwear had gone too. But to compound our loss the staff at All Stars Music were less than sympathetic.
There is absolutely nothing lower than someone who would steal a mans Cheetos!

Been lucky, haven't had anything stolen at WDW.
I have, however, found things twice.

Once we were in Advertureland and there on an outside table was a small purse. Looking at it and it's contents showed that it was probably a child's purse with some spending money. We sat there beside it for a few minutes and, sure enough, soon a family with a crying child came. The child, a boy I think, was glad to get it back and his dad told him to say 'Thank you' for watching it. A happy moment when he got it back.

Also- with the Dinosaur ride's being so extremely bumpy, things get lost on it. I found two room/park tickets on the seat in the ride vehicle. We turned them in to the nearest gift shop and they said they would contact the owners.

Personally, I don't take anything into the parks except the room/park ticket, $20 or less, a small camera, and a couple of spare batteries for the camera.
BTW, the LLBean web site sells some neat shorts that work well at WDW because they have lots of pockets and all the pockets have Velcro or zippers. They are called 'Pathfinder' shorts.

I think that basic precaution is necessary at WDW in the parks and in the rooms. Overall it's a safe place but there are a lot of people there.

:)

We once found a passport on the ground in MGM.
We turned it in and hopefully the owner realized it was missing while they were still in the park. I hope so.

We've never had anything stolen while at WDW.

Trust me here good natured folk - there are people in this world that prey on the vulnerable and the unsuspecting. If you value those precious items then be sure to take good care of them - don't chance things to luck because "it always happens to someone else" - by the law of averages you'll be next

I agree 100%!!!! Last year when we were at DW, the first night we were there, we told my boyfriend to put his money (about $400) in the safe in our room. Of course he didn't and it came up "missing" when we were leaving MK after the fireworks. Good thing we had the dining plan or we would have had to cut our trip short! We don't know if it was lost or stolen...either way, it sucked! Also, in 2006 we took our 18 month old on his first trip and he was just starting to walk really well. My boyfriends sister said just to let him walk by himself and not hold his hand all the time.....HA!!! I would have to be a crazy person to do that! There are too many people around and as "magical" of a place as it is, it's a breeding ground for child molesters and kidnappers....so, I'd rather hold my son all day and have my arm feel like it's going to fall off than risk losing him!!!

Oh yeah...what sparked me to write my last post was he said that "there were a lot of other people there with more money than him, that no one was going to take his money"....yeah right!!! he had the "it always happens to someone else" attitude and was proved VERY wrong!

Yes, twice. Once my car was broken into at the MK parking lot in 2005. My radar detector, my rearview mirror (I'm not kidding), my XM receiver, xm remote control, my CD changer control, the center caps on my rims (weird), my license plate, and my speakers were stolen The other time I was pickpocketed while at the Magic Kingdom. My ipod and wallet were taken.

It hasn't stopped me from coming to Disney, but it has made me even more aware of Disney Security's incompetence, and how much they'd rather you not demand OCSO do a police report as opposed to Disney Security's own report.

That stinks... Atleast they didn't steal your rims and tires.. Imagine coming back from the park to find your car up on blocks... Was any of it covered by your insurance?

I think that most of times its user forgetfulness. "Oh yeah, I did spend that extra $100.00 bill at Epcot:hammer:"

Dark Helmet: So the combination is one, two, three, four, five? That's the stupidest combination I've ever heard in my life! The kind of thing an idiot would have on his luggage!
President Skroob: 1 2 3 4 5? That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage! Prepare Spaceball 1 for immediate departure!
President Skroob: And change the combination on my luggage!

My insurance covered it, however theylowballed me on the values, so I still had to pay a bit out of pocket. Also, my sunglasses got stolen too

I did. Granted it wasn't exactly in the world, but in a nearby "Disney Good Neighbor" hotel.

long story short, I was staying by myself in a hotel room the night before I was supposed to fly home from my CP. Came home from working all day (18 hours) to find my laptop stolen. Police fingerprinting and a full scale investigation later, we find out that the night manager of the hotel made a new key for my room and went in to uh.... go through my clothes :)hurl:).... saw my laptop on the way out, and decided he needed a little extra spending money. In the end, he plead out and I'm supposed to be receiving compensation for it (though I've yet to see anything....), but thousands of pictures are all gone, including all of the ones from my CP. Lesson learned- (among the many) BACKUP YOUR PICTURES.

Nothing stolen, but we got really lucky. On our trip in 2005 we came back to our room after a full day in the park and found our door propped open from the maid going in and out. We looked to see if anything was missing but didn't find anything.
We called down to the front desk and informed them of what happened and they asked us if we knew if anything was stolen and we said no. They told us if we did realized something was stolen that we could just inform they and they would reimburse us.

On our trip in 2003, our van was broken into in the MK parking lot. Luckily, anything that was stolen was mainly a major inconvenience. But, the window was busted and there was damage all around that area of the door. We were apparently one of many that night and we were told by the Orange County Sheriff that this is not an uncommon event. Just use caution and always be alert, even at WDW. :)
