Hey there, and welcome back! Finally time for another Update, and this time it's an extra-long-SPECTACLE-special! Lots to get too, so let's get the ball rolling!

STUDIOS

-Crowds were HEAVY. And I mean, HEAVY. (Midway Mania at 120 Mins., Coaster 100, Tower 70.)

-Spectacle of Lights has returned! All the lights went off without a hitch, and aside from the outrageous crowds during the first hour, everything went just fine.

-The glasses have somewhat returned, although they AREN'T snowflakes you see now, just a different rainbow-reflective pattern from this line of American Paper Optics light-pattern glasses. (As they said during the last few years, they don't work with the immensely better Streets of America show, and they honestly never worked for the Spectacle ever. Just a nice novelty freebie they gave out to calm the unnatural neverending line from the Residential Street show. ) Anyways, if you want a pair show your Annual Pass at Package Pick Up or at Youse Guys Merchandise for a free pair, or you can buy them for $1 at any Studios shop or street vendor walking around with them.

-Midway Mania was working just fine, and the wall from previous updates has been repainted, and the wallpaper stripes from the staircase are now PAINTED on, and look really good!

Good to hear they fixed the embarrassing mess inside TSMM.

Let's hope it stays fixed!

And, correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Studios close at 8 last night?

Again, despite it being Thanksgiving week and opening of Ozzie and Sharon's Lights Spectacular the days of 11 or midnight closings is ancient history!

Yes, closed at 8, but the lights stayed on an hour afterward, so the park was still active for a good deal of the night. (Plus EPCOT was open until 12:30...)

An 8 p.m. close this week is, frankly, embarrassing.

Especially if the crowds are there. It would be one thing if the place were dead, but clearly that isn't the case. Disney is just looking to save on labor to make up for all the empty resort rooms it expects as soon as the holidays are over.

As for EPCOT, that 12:30 close didn't help the off-site guests, which outnumber those that stay at WDW resorts almost every day of the year. And that close was likely paid for just by the money Disney made on three seatings of Candlelight Processional Dining Packages!

How did it not help them? It wasn't EMH, it was a normal 12:30PM closing. Anyone could go, anyone could stay.

And Studios is usually open until 8 all the time, save for a few occasional 10PM closings back like this Summer. Not really seeing an issue here. I agree on the future 8PM closing for EPCOT coming up, but this is normal.

The 28th was an extra magic hour night for Epcot.

Yes. It was an EMH. And that close was 12:30 A.M. not P.M. (sorry to be picky, but this is a big pet peeve with me as I even see it wrong sometimes on official schedules!)

And while everyone could stay in the park (this isn't like the hard ticket, you can't use the bathrooms after 7 p.m. MVMCP at MK!) they couldn't experience the attractions after 9:30 on what is traditionally a very crowded day.

Ah ... but it didn't used to be. I also 'think' (could be wrong here) that even the past few years the Studios were extended to 10 closings this weekend. But I can tell you for a fact that The Park Formerly Known as The Disney-MGM Studios used to regularly have closings as late as midnight (2 a.m. believe it or not the first few summers because the crowds were so bad and there were so few attractions!)

This is an example where younger guests or relative newbies don't realize that no, 8 p.m. closings during busy periods is not at all how WDW used to operate and it makes for a much more crowded, rushed, haried Disney-parkgoing experience then in prior days.

Sometimes I think I should go to my filing cabinet of old Disney crap and pull out some old operating schedules so people would have a better idea of what a decade-plus of WalMarting has done to expectations.

So it was. (Just going off what I heard that night)

But EPCOT DID stay open until 9:30, with a 9:30 Illuminations.

Yes. So what?

In past years, Disney would have kept EC open until between 10 and midnight for ALL guests this weekend.

The extra 30 minutes, as I've said before, is only so Disney can fit in an extra seating of pricey Candlelight Dinner Packages ... otherwise, it would be 9 p.m.

Again, Travis, so cool to see what a great show the Lights are at DHS. I was looking at all my pics from last year and they look better this year, or you just take better pictures.:lol::lol:

Thanks again for posting a great and humorous Studios update. I rarely make it to that park and it's great to get a chance to see it. :king:

You should pull out your schedule because I can't recal the Disney-MGM Studios ever closing as late as 2am on a regular basis. New Years Eve & Special events are one thing but the studios has almost always seen regular 7pm to 10pm closing times.

Thanks for the updates and pictures!

Are you planning on going to MK anytime soon? I see you haven't had an MK update since July. Just wondering....no pressure :animwink:

And can we keep park hour debates to the "More park hour cuts" thread?

The 2 a.m. closes were in effect for summers in the 1989-90 timeframe. They weren't part of the original plan, but were the result of huge crowds and lack of attractions.

But 11 p.m. and midnight closings were in fact often the case during summer, Spring Break and Christmas during the park's first decade of operation.
