News EPCOT's Harmonious to be replaced with new nighttime spectacular Luminous

Makes sense, but it would be nice to know that EF really isn't needed anymore. That would mean Epcot did the right thing with Luminous. And nothing in TWDC better hurt Luminous!!!!
It isn’t that’s for sure, if Luminous were to replace Reflections of Earth it would have ran up until the night before luminous opened. before reflections of earth they’d run the previous show up until the day before the opening of the new show, harmonious required demolition and construction in the lake and right there is where the stupid began. This new hardware is so universal they can literally rebuild the earth barge, make a new pyro setup and switch shows overnight. They can even probably achieve fire affects in these new barges they have.

I don’t think they will ever go back to ROE because that will be admitting failure. Whereas the narrative for Harmonious was simply changed to be a limited offering instead of a failed show.
MSEP has returned twice for limited events I wouldn’t be surprised. It would bring in money and attendance and more because people would want to see it as much as they can before it left. If something like summer nightastic came along I would be surprised if they didn’t offer ROE.

We're going to need a bigger stake.

[Pixie duster hating on a Disney parade. Imagine that!]
Just star luck luminous will be a hit and then they’ll return reflections of earth for a “limited event” than say luminous was destroyed in storage. Luminous is an expensive sho, ROE is allot cheaper and he’ll take his popularity as an advantage.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!! I meant to go find that but never did.
In all fairness I think the good sign @wdwmagic was referring to was it would be delivered on time.

I guess the more to the point question would have been to understand the point of reference Steve was using was asking :

If he’s excited and feels this show has the potential to be something memorable and defining for Epcot?

Or If he’s excited about what’s coming only because it isn’t EF and anything is better than EF?

Of course he’s an international man of mystery so we may never know.

Getting rid of a show (less than 2 years in) and its infrastructure that cost hundreds of millions of dollars, was advertised and hyped up for 2 straight years as the "biggest nighttime spectacular" they've ever done, and that was said to last at LEAST a decade is, to me, publicly admitting failure and I say this as one of Harmonious's biggest defenders on this website.

I agree with the sentiment that the barges was what killed the show. Had they been maneuverable it would be playing over the lagoon at 9:15 tonight.

A couple weeks ago I was talking about the fact that even in L:SOU ends up being a flop, this show infrastructure could geniunely last them for YEARS. Like I'm honestly impressed with the way Disney thought this one out. Easily comparable to a modern day ROE set-up and could last equally as long if needed

Harm had many issues...

1. The oversized barges that were out all day.
2. The failure of the barges to produce a daytime fountain display to 'hide' the barges. This failure hurt the nighttime performance by not being able to create large fans of spray. And made Imagineering look bad because they advertised this feature.
3. The Stargate that faced only two directions, especially leaving out a prime up-sell spot in the UK.
4. The awkward silhouette of the tacos and their "arms" which looked like human arms that bent and turned the wrong way.
5. At night, many of the fountains weren't lit correctly because there were no spotlights following them (and not being laminar, light didn't propagate thru the fountains).
6. The stargate spray's projection wasn't that bright, especially for its distance.
7. Poor choice of music: the controversial song from Aladdin, and the way over-the-top multi-voiced-belting of Tiana's song which wound up being a mess.
8. From the beginning WDW was at odds with itself over what this was supposed to be: "Dance brings people together." [And yet, very little of the music chosen was danceable.] "Music in other languages bring people together." "Disney stories bring people together."
9. And as mentioned above, they found trying to keep this working was very expensive. For some reason, spraying lake water over mechanical and electrical equipment wasn't a good idea.

But what do I know? I'm just a shill.

You left out the biggest issue - the incremental guest spending was lower than it was during Illuminations. Adults weren’t staying and spending money in the same way they were for Illuminations. The goal is to keep people there through the end of the night.

I read that Chapek wanted the next show to be like a big Disney concert. I’m thinking they were just entertaining his wishes with no inspiration or motivation and trying to do the best they could to satisfy his dumb idea at that point nor really caring what happens. Can’t say I blame them if that’s the issue, looks like this show has had some love poured into it despite the IP. even with IP let’s not forget that fountain we loved so much was loaded with IP and built for a IP show in the first place.

Yeah I disagree with the idea that this show is "stuffed" with IP. Harmonious was stuffed you could easily argue that. The IP inclusion seems carefully thought about in this one though. They serve an actual purpose in telling the story

IP always serves an actual purpose in telling the story. Every show has a "story." Everyone is acting like the "Epcot-lens" makes IP no longer just IP. It doesn't. It just makes Epcot that much closer to every other theme park. And the presence of IP-music in this show makes the show more similar to HEA than RoE—that's just a fact. Maybe it will be a good show, but it's not the kind of show I'd like to see in Epcot.
