The canopies look pretty neat from the top down (satelite pictures). That effect never really translated once you are on the ground though. I could see where they were going with it, but it just didn't work.I'm referring to the canopies, too.
Ah so it begins...the generation that grew up with the current Epcot will now start to clash with those who pine for the original. Where is my popcorn smiley...I happened to grow up with the canopies and those kinetic sculptures.
Yes, it'll be more spacious and open, but if true, it won't be the EPCOT I know of anymore.
Really? It's a nice effect but so random in the middle of the plaza...:shrug:No! Save the whirlygigs! Circus tent and pin station, yes get rid of! But keep the whirlygigs!!!
Actually, just keep the purple spiraly ones. The pink ribbony ones can go because I've never really thought those worked or looked well. The purple spiral ones, though, KEEP!
You won't need it with me! I'm ready to go back to 1993 and 1994...Green EPCOT is the way to go!:sohappy:Ah so it begins...the generation that grew up with the current Epcot will now start to clash with those who pine for the original. Where is my popcorn smiley...

:ROFLOL:What was that jakeman? Missing something?
Ooooh, I gotcha. Move them to the sides. Not really. The way I see it, they work well to kinda frame the entrances to the breezeways. Repaint them a different shade (for example, one set could be green, the other could be blue ) and place them on either side of the walkway next to their respectively colored Innoventions breezeway and BOOM! a little kinetic motion and, as you put it, "nice effect" framing the path yet not so intrusive as to ruin the new green and open plaza!
Interesting theory...:ROFLOL:
I should probably clarify my position (and state that I don't really have a stake in either side). I don't think that this particular thread will start flame wars, but this may be the first indication of a shift in thinking on Epcot.
I have a theory that the first time you experience something and it makes an impression on you at WDW is the best and everything after that downhill. That is reflected in posting styles and park preferences and can be summed up with the statement "Walt Disney World was at its peak the first time visited in XXXX". This is just a general and by no means all inclusive rule.
However, what we are starting to see are fans that grew up with the Epcot of 1999 and later start to claim that was the Epcot they know and embodied the true "Spirit of Epcot" for them. So when those changes are reverted or outright retooled, they are losing the same thing that defenders of EPCOT Center claimed to have been losing all these years.
It's just an observation on my part from years of being on this board and will be interesting to see if my gut feeling on this topic pans out.
Since there is a need around here to be explicit, lest be misrepresented, I have no particular opinion either way.

jakeman, I see your point.
I do remember older and now extinct EPCOT attractions. I have seen progress go by. I have grown around EPCOT 2000. I do welcome changes heartily. And I do miss some changes, (SSE94 NOT out the question).
I am just saying that progress for newer (and hopefully well-received) changes will happen, and I will miss whatever is changed. But it's progress.
In fact, I predict we will have a next reincarnation of EPCOT coming sooner or later. So yes, there will always be generations like mine that say they grew up in _______ EPCOT.
Yep, SSE94 is the big draw for that time in EPCOT. Such a shame they killed it.Hmmmm. Interesting concept, yes. I think there is some truth to it. Right now though, anything that would be changing from the Epcot I knew would be aesthetic changes (like LaL and the circus tents and landscaping, all of which I want to see change). That being said, I still preferred SSE '94, and while the main part of the ride is still there, I miss Jeremy Irons and the stirring and meaningful narration that he so brilliantly intoned. The Seas and El Rio are other issues also, but SSE is the big one for me right now.
You'll miss Journey Into Imagination with Figment?!
I will...a bit. There was something awesome about seeing Figgy again in 2005 after not seeing him for a few years.
...Even though Dreamfinder was gone...and the ride was shorter....:lookaroun
