EPCOT – the park that lost its optimism

That's it, I just failed my fanboy sobriety test *couldn't sing tomorrow's child backwards this time*

Epcot's Future World has become a great place for hands on, and discovery.

There is truly something for everyone at Epcot, which is far better than EPCOT Center's earliest notions of "the parents will bring the kids to EPCOT Center, the kids can bring the parents to the Magic Kingdom"

My gripe is with the cosmetics of Future World.

There is no common theme, but rather a combination of past refurbs and redos.

The rebranding of SSE from its signs, new logo, paint, and foliage helps envelope guest in the Epcot experience.

My hope is that Future World can continue to learn from what has been done with SSE and the interior and modern spaces of Project Tomorrow.

So that we can finally loose the yellow ceilings and purple paint at the Epcot entrance, and can have a more unified theme and design throughout Future World.

As for the attractions, Test Track does entertain, and inform, and does in a way inspire.

Same goes more M:S, though I think what guests see before the ride is more inspiring about space, and the future than the post show.

WoL is dead, but that doesn't mean it can't be replaced by something new.

UoE needs a facelift, and with our energy crisis, I hope they could do a new show, but not as bland as the original.

The Seas shifted too much toward kids IMHO, and not enough in the building that offered something for everyone, and the land pavilion is a great combination of something for everyone, while Imagination needs a refurb for a variety of reasons.

My concern is that Disney tries to put too much of the company into the parks, rather than offering more of the Disney experience.

By Disney experience I mean people raving about Soarin, Test Track, and Mission:Space

And I have no problems with characters in future world costumes, or from their native lands in world showcase, but I don't see the need for the kim possible adventure, when it could be a disney experience and unique world showcase adventure that would be timeless and could involve epcot created characters and events.

As for world showcase itself, I am all for new countries, and thrill rides in world showcase.

I was OK with the new O'Canada film, but the film will become more outdated with the use of Martin Short, that had it been done with a new nameless narrator.

There could also be a revival of ideas that would seem new to guests. A new worldkey system, and by all means NOT what it was in 1982, but a new system that could be used at all the parks that is an interactive and fun experience.

First off, I want to thank all of you. Agree or disagree, I think we've had some great discussions on this topic.

Second, I think many of you have captured the meaning of my original post. It is the spirit of EPCOT that I want to get back. Many have said that the country is missing optimism therefore, it would be out of place at EPCOT.

I totally disagree. In fact, EPCOT (and Disney for that matter) should be free of the negative influences of the real world (again, spiritually, not economically). I don't go to Disney to experience reality...I go to experience the world the way we wish it was.

I am not naive enough to think that the world will ever be the way we wish it was but, then again, why should we simply accept it as reality. Why not go to EPCOT to get a needed boost of optimism and reassurance that what is today does not have to be tomorrow.

I think another issue is that Disney is learning less and less guests are interested in how old EPCOT worked. Less people want to fly all the way to Florida to ride Documentaries. I know I wasn't a big fan of most of those old documentary type rides *prepares to get stoned to death*

Welll...EC never had a ride about EC.

Epcot DID have a 25th Gallery...

But that's gone now.

A step backwards from our foward motion, IMHO.:(

Their core value is making money... nothing more, nothing less.

That plaque some of you guys drool over... just another tool of their trade. Here's the deal, you fell for it and will never be happy because it's not real. However, most guests are aware of the charade and, therefore, can enjoy it to the fullest.

The problem is within you, not the park. ;)

Don't be that cynical.

Every park at Disney officially has a purpose, even if it's just window dressing to make more money. ;)

Out of all four, however, Epcot is the only one that tries to aspire to something bigger than itself.

I totally agree with Tirian!

However, I don't want it to seem as if I don't enjoy EPCOT now, because that wouldn't be the truth. For me personally, there is something that is missing from my experience. And you are correct, that this a problem with me. Although I am glad to see that some people (and it would include sponsors *cough* Siemens* cough*) seem to agree with me, I would never belittle anyone who doesn't agree with me or try to ruin their experience.

If I am being duped or have a "problem", then I am doing so with a smile on my face.

If you feel the way that you do and you go to EPCOT and leave with a smile on our face, that is awesome.

We both win! While I am hopeful for change, I am realistic that EPCOT is not out to please me and people who hold my same opinion. If the kind of change that I would like to happen doesn't...then I know that I have a place that I can come and discuss my opinions.

No Stoning here!

EPCOT has a wide variety of people that they are trying to appeal to with their attractions, and you are right that not everyone wants to ride a research paper in motion.

I miss the optimism and delivery of the past. I know that it is still there to some degree, to me it just doesn't feel the same.

It doesn't stop me from enjoying my time in EPCOT today, but it just seems a little tainted.

I enjoy the heck out of EPCOT. It is always the park I want to visit - and most of the time I will only do a half day at one of the other parks so I can at least get to EPCOT by the mid-afternoon.

It's my favorite place to take pictures, to sit on a bench and soak up the atmosphere...and to admire the architecture and theming.

:)
